Battle of the Sexes

Two women talking:

Woman 1: Oh! You got a haircut! That's so cute!

Woman 2: Do you think so? I wasn't sure when she gave me the mirror. I Mean, you don't think it's too fluffy looking?

Woman 1: No, it's perfect. I would love to get my hair cut like that, but I think my face is too wide. I'm pretty much stuck with this stuff I think!

Woman 2: Are you serious? I think your face is adorable. And you could easily get one of those layer cuts - that would look so cute I think. I was actually going to do that except that I was afraid it would accent my long neck.

Woman 1: Oh - that's funny! I would love to have your neck! Anything to take attention away from these football player shoulders of mine.

Woman 2: Are you kidding? I know girls that would love to have your shoulders. Everything drapes so well on you. I mean, look at my arms, see how short they are? If I had your shoulders I could get clothes to fit me so much easier.

Now, two men are talking:

Man 1: Haircut?
Man 2: Yeah.

This joke has been around for a while, but I still get a chuckle out of it. It certainly plays to the stereotypes, but it's also funny because there is a lot of truth to it. I think we here at Basenotes, demonstrate this almost daily.

I've been reading the SOTD threads on both forums for several weeks now, and almost every day I'm reminded of this joke. Over on the Female Forum, they (and the guys that participate there) get to know each other, wish each other Happy Birthday, console each other over the hardships of life, etc., etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it. I honestly think it's great.

Over here on the Male Forum though, we (and the females that participate) typically just name the fragrance we're wearing. Occasionally someone lists the notes or whether it's from a bottle, decant, sample, etc., or maybe where they got it. But even that is being stereotypically, analytical male. Sticking to just the facts.

Anyway, that was my observation, and I wanted to share it. No offense intended to anyone of either gender. I appreciate everyone who posts in either or both SOTD threads. I always look forward to reading them every day.

Cheers fellow Basenoters. You all smell great today.

Interesting.

Yeah, I enjoy the female SotD the most, over
there one get a comment once in a while +
it is funnier to read the ladies fuller SotDs..!
I try to give it a sort of "frame"... why I chose the scent or how I like the sample...
As with anything, a big long explanation about something usually tuns me off. I'm willing to bet that anybody who would post a big long diatribe on the male SOTD forum about why they're wearing what they do wouldn't get their post read. I think it's fine to post a comment or two. Most guys just like to keep things short & sweet.

Yeah, that's the problem I have found.

Damn, I really left the door wide open! ;-)

I love the way the women's thread is touchy feely and the men's is the opposite. Basenotes needs male and female energy IMHO !
This thread just puts into words ,the stuff, I have noticed for a long time. I love the fact that the men post on the ladies' side and the ladies' butt in on the men's threads too .
My observation- more creed Love on the men's side too !
It's all good stuff.

( My husband agrees heartily with the joke in the first post ! *LOL* He says women " just talk, scream ,bitch, talk ,coo ,touch ,coo, talk ,gossip, talk and go on and on and on" *LOL* )
I don't see problem in this at all. I like to post here because i like objectivity, i don't have so much patient to read too long posts. It's just me i think. But i like to talk with women specially because they have so much to talk that you just have to pay attention, in general they have interesting things to say. I like more to hear than to talk, you always learn more hearing than talking I think.

I'll take the male stance in replying to Mimi Gardenia...

"Yup."

LOL

And what bring some women to the male aisle? Just curious about it...
I wear a lot of perfumes that are marketed for men. I like getting the impressions of the men who wear 'em as well as the impressions of other women who wear "men's perfumes."

*LOL* that's what I do - laugh when he says stuff like that. It's what makes us different from guys ! *LOL*

rickbr-What brings us to the men's side is ( to me anyway ) ...your thoughts are different and your conversation is different- a different view point plus you guys are funny too . Really!

Women think of their fragrance collections as friends. Men just want to know which bottle would win in a fight.

Yup!

Ladies, please do keep posting over here on the men's forum. We love to read what you have to say. I wish I was more knowledgeable on women's fragrances, so I could participate more (with something useful) on the women's forum.

Well, try some of 'em!

Different conversations and different perspective. I just don't usually have much to contribute.

Nothin' but the truth.

You can put this man in a women's scent but you can't make him jabber cupcakes and kittens.

You're exactly right. This is probably the topic for another thread (or likely already has been), but do you have any suggestions? I love the unisex Mugler Cologne, the should-be-unisex Kenzo Power, and really appreciate Hermes Hiris that one of my BN friends sent me to try. What other pour femmes work well on men?

Because I'm interested in reading about why the guys like or choose the scents they choose. But I'm old and generally forget most guys post just the scent names on the male side, and then I'm disappointed. Y'all could just have a list posted daily and you just check off the frag name....
It's not really a "battle of the sexes" more of a "Mars/Venus" thing. I also wear frags marketed to men, because I like 'em.
When I first started posting on Basenotes I felt more comfortable posting on the male side. It took me a while to open up to the girls. I also wear several male and unisex fragrances and found more analysis on the male side. Lately I spend more time with the girls, they are a lot of fun!

I don't know but I THINK the following would be great on men:

Anthracite (Jacomo, discontinued but still available)
Bandit
Hermes Amazone (the brown cap version, still available)
Leonard de Leonard (another discontinued beauty)

For starters.

And for the record I don't believe I've ever "jabbered cupcakes and kittens" OR cooed. Not in this lifetime anyway. LOL

I tried Bandit. It's interesting. Kind of dirty floral to me. Didn't get much leather. I could wear it- on occasion. Just not sure what occasion or I would have bought it. Kind of interesting stuff. Black Orchid reminds a lot of Bandit and I notice they're pushing Black Orchid in the men's section of late.

Layer Bandit and Bvlgari Black and see what happens!

That sounds dangerous and interesting. I may have to try that.

Bvlagari Black is my next target
