Summers coming up soon. Do the males here rock the banana hammock, square cut briefs, loose trunks, or cover themselves with 5-yards of fabric?

Ladies, which do you prefer men to wear?

Personally love the brief style, and find it hilarious so many people are so frightened by the thought of men wearing them.

I like briefs/short tight trunks in a 60's kind of mood.

Retro style trunks (slightly longer than normal trunks, slightly higher than board shorts) work for my body and style.

Penguin makes some great ones that are nice and basic in style, color and print and they last forever! Which surprised me, since most of their clothes are too narrow fitting for me.

Trunks! Not too baggy, not skin-tight.

I have been looking for the right boxer-brief style bathing suit for a while now.

Square cut briefs are a little too short, trunks are slightly too loose.

I will find them.

Plain trunks. The more plain, the better. IMO, clothes are a frame for the picture. You want the frame to complement the picture, not clash with it, or draw attention to itself.

Ooooh my, oh my!

It really depends on the length and musculature of your legs. For example, baggy surf boardshorts will only make short legs look shorter and turn skinny legs into bird legs. And if you're gonna sport an itsy bitsy Speedo, for God's sake, trim those pubes...

I like some of the ones in this video. Some of the swimwear also.

Good link, petruccijc. But washboard abs seem like a prerequisite.

LOL @ Le Grand Duc. Indeed.

This question all depends on the man in question. For water polo, only Speedos will do. For a day at the beach, surfer trunks. On a swimsuit pin-up boy in a souvenir calendar, a G-string...

I am thinking a particularly lovely French dandy...shopping in London's fashionable Burlington Arcade...had he lived today...would have looked ravissant in these...only the best would do.

I wear trunks or square-cut speedos =)
In my 20s it was trunks, in my 30s its the boardshorts! lol!

Seriously? An old-fashioned bathing suit. With a boater, a pipe and a mustache, preferably.

If I can't have that, trunks, or, on the right man, nothing at all.

No swimmer, since though I can swim, I generally have a certain reticence about swimming both in pools and in open waters

But on the rare occasion when I go for a swim or simply to lounge around the beach/on the poolside, I wear bathing shorts

Used to wear briefs all my youth. Now I sport some kind of fairly short black shorts, trunks I assume.
I've always been a swimmer so it's very natural for me to use briefs, speedo-like, square cut preferably.
Never a g-string of course.
I find trunks to be dull and contradictory with swimming and you will get a strange/uneven tan as well. It takes all the fun of swimming for me.
I never go to public beaches anymore, i try to avoid the sun and crowds of people too. So for me i prefer swimming just before sundown, early morning or even at night.

cheers

At my age now - trunks. In my youth - briefs.
Speedos of course, despite the age. I'm European after all. I don't think I ever saw trunks on the beach in Tuscany in the 70s-80s.

I lived in Hawaii for 4 years, so boardshorts were a must in my wardrobe.
What, no love for the g-string???
I have some Aussiebum 70's, you have to be pretty secure in your sexuality and be a gym rat to feel comfortable in them though.
trunks, but nothing too wide or too long. i love the vintage belted ones, very elegant. briefs are alright too, they can be very masculine. they need to be simple, well fitted and nicely cut.

LOL! JC, very funny!

Shorter and not-so-baggy board shorts. Don't like the skin-tight look on guys... I'll wear spandex speedo-type shorts for Bikram yoga practice but never in public. Men's fashion is starting to follow women's trends, ugh...

I bought my first pair of boardshorts this summer for a Hawaiian vacation. Have had bad experiences with different trunks: too short, making me look like an NBA player from the '70s...could see through them when they got wet (thanks, Nike!!)...clung to my body so tight when they got wet that you could see every (cough) "outline." The Hurley boardshorts I bought were awesome. Longer (just short of my knees)...barely felt them in the water...didn't cling when I came out...and dried in the sun within minutes.

Whatever looks best on your particular body type.

no one pick g string!!! lol!!!!

I grew up in the 80's and briefs were the most popular at the time. so naturally I became used to wearing them. I can't swim in anything else, well, maybe the "old school" swim shorts that are mid to upper thigh, but primarily briefs. I swim at the gym that way and everywhere else. I find my swim workouts less restrictive that way.

One person had already commented that I totally agree on, that it is almost impossible to swim with such long shorts like board shorts. If your a guy who would like to get as much of a tan as possible, you can't do that with board shorts.

A mix of trunks and boardshorts in the wardrobe
post #37 of 37
I like short trunks. Don't understand "shorts" that go below the knee.
