Album, CD, or Song of the Day ~ June 2010 - Page 2

I've been listening to the first White Stripes album a lot these past couple days. Jack White has done a lot of cool stuff since, but this album is still my favorite out of all the Stripes albums, and has about half of my favorite tunes from them. It's much more raw and garage-y than what came later.

^Man I forgot how garagey they were!

Mathew Jonson - Love In The Future

This is the only track I like on Mathew's debut album. Reminds me a little bit of the older Jesse Somfay sound.

I took a look at the tracklist and it's almost filled with a lot of reused big dancefloor tunes. I really like the first track & that Smith n Hack record but I remember it being on repeat 2 years ago for me. Thought he'd do something interesting with the mixing but it sounds like it's just A to B mixes.

I thought the same thing N. But hearing it playing all together, in the 'flow' of the mix is a whole different story. Just a gem. There are many moments of 'OMG, this sounds so good!' sort of the feeling I get when I walk into a club where a really good DJ is playing and I can't wait to see who it is that's spinning and what track that is playing. Mayer, IMO, is the king of the studio mix. He really knows how to create a vibe that the hearer creates in his/her head. I will shut up now...as you can see I really like it.

Wow that take make back to my salad days. This is the one with 'song to the siren' on it right?

Interesting, I've never hear of this one before - thanks Mike! It's delightful.

I've been getting a kick out of watching One Hit Wonders Of The '80s. It's 90% laughable hair and dance pop, but the 10% that's enjoyable musically has put me on to fun stuff I've never heard of before.

and old song of Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Maps" that like many

Oh yes, track 2. Back when 4AD was the sh*t!

I remember getting this album, a Nitzer Ebb album and my first Dead Can Dance CD from the same record store (down in South Miami) and went home and listened to them about 20 times in a row, on my little stereo on the ground of my new apartment (I didn't have a couch or a table, but I had a stereo with a turntable!). Before mp3's and Ipods and file-sharing. Nice memories.

John Digweed - Structures (CD 1 Preview)

The first half of CD 1 sounds really lush, Digweed doing Deep-House. Really looking forward to hearing it out in full. That remix of Cream by Dirty Mongrel that sneaks in at [9:23] on the podcast is groovy. It has this summer after hours patio sound to it.

I got a copy of the new Chemical Brothers CD, 'Further'. I was a HUGE CB fan, many years ago. I think I have their entire discography of remixes and everyone of their EP's, singles, albums and mixes - yet the last couple of releases have left me wanting a bit more. I found some of their new stuff a bit electronica-by-the-numbers. I felt like they lost their edge. The new album sounds promising though...so I am spending all of today listening to all of my Chemical Brothers songs (and remixes) on ITunes Shuffle. Some favorites include stuff from the new album plus those wonderful mixes they did, 'Live At The Social, Volume 1' and 'Brothers Gonna Work It Out'.

Renaissance: Revelation mixed by Danny Howells and Nick Warren

An oldie, but a goodie. That opening track, in Howells mix, the Ashley Beedle remix of 'Always' by Bent is one of my house favorites.

Fabric 13 is brilliant, isn't it? Everytime I throw a house party, I put that CD on and it gets loads of compliments. My mother-in-law loves it. It's one of Mayers best non-Kompakt mixes. And yes, that Le Dust Sucker track is sick.

This one has really grown on me. I like how it uses the "This Is Not A Love Song" sample in a very different context.

Thanks Aiona. Actually, I just learned how to read Hiragana (one of the Japanese alphabets) this weekend. I hope to learn how to read Katakana next weekend!

Unfortunately, the writing on the youtube page seems to be in both Hiragana and Katakana, so I can only read some of it! (They use Hiragana for traditional Japanese words, and Katakana for all "borrowed" words, from other languages). I'll try to get back to you with the location when I'm a more fluent reader

A great song to run on the treadmill to. Really gets the blood moving!

For me today it was:

Gemini by Wild Nothing

A strange new toy I've just discovered. Is it shoegaze? Twee? Britpop? Who cares, when it sounds this good. 'Live in Dreams', the 1st track on the album, recreates that perfect blending of voice and instrumentation that Morrissey and Johnny Marr struck on early releases by The Smiths. It's that good.

Thanks! I looked them up on MySpace as well, and I really like their song "夜の東側." That appears to be in kanji, which I totally cannot read. (The only characters I remember are "heart" and "student," and "student" only because it looks like a crude drawing of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.) Oh well.

I've been listening to Sleigh Bells a bunch these past couple days. I'm split on whether they're repellent and annoying and convulsively entertaining, but after listening through their Treats album a couple times I'm kind of digging it. It's like some girl's sweet sixteen party happening at a construction site, and it sounds as if you're hearing it blasted from a car stereo cranked up to the max.

Of the new bands I've heard lately, I can actually picture these two getting big, big enough for me to get the point of beng totally sick of hearing them everywhere. But for now, it's good fun and makes me want to dance...

Shahdaroba by Roy Orbison from 'The Soul Of Rock and Roll' album

Mad Men fans might remember this one, playing as the last song (end credits) on the season finale of Season 3. But even if you're not a MM fan, this song is still amazing. Orbison is a genius.

Agoria - Grande Torino

Another 13 minute orchestrated masterpiece by Agoria. A warm minimal tech-house bassline, an extended breakdown & his signature violins and piano make it an enjoyable & emotional listen.

Super busy so I haven't been listening to much lately, just checking this thread occasionally. This is really good. I also like the Mathew Jonson track you posted earlier.

This popped up today on my Ipod shuffle (at the gym this morning). I forgot how much I love those Aphex Twin b-sides...sometimes they sounded even better than the single or album tracks themselves. This one, a remix of 'On' from 1993, in no way resembles the original track at all. Totally different.

The first time I heard one of those 20 minute Ricardo Villalobos tracks - you know the ones that go on forever and ever and have a tribal, chanting style to them (flat drums, percussion, repetitious) I thought - wow...that sounds like that Aphex Twin remix. James has always been a bit ahead-of-his-time and this rare track is proof of that.

One for the headphones folks.

Solid remix EP. Morgan Geist does a nice retro mix & love the tribal edit Cleis has done.
