2010 FIFA World Cup™ South Africa

Here we go!

Should have started this thread weeks ago but no matter.

Wishing South Africa the best in their group and with the tournament as a whole. I expect Mexico and Uruguay to advance from Group A ahead of the hosts and France, although a look at the French squad shows it is still formidable, whatever their other problems.

I suspect the pick of the first of the group games will be Honduras-Chile next Wednesday. USA-England ought to be a cracker, as well.

USA and the World Cup just don't go together. It's going to be a great summer, England winning the world cup and all. My money is firmly on England to win, Rooney Golden Boot.

Two words: Belo Horizonte.

I am hoping for a draw, actually. It won't be a classic, in all likelihood but hard-fought and compelling, I'm sure.

EDIT: Gareth Barry's injury is a rough one, because Carrick has been rubbish for a while now. I'm hearing Gerrard-Lampard through the middle? We'll see how that goes.

Sepp Blather on now. [vomits]

I am so excited for tomorrow! Actually, South Africa are just about to kick off....

So, who will be watching USA v England later?

Definitely me. Its going to be a closer game than most think.

The football world cup is the most important sporting event .. stuff like the NBA playoffs and the Stanley cup don't even come close to the excitement generated and the beautiful play created by amazing stars such as Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka, Rooney, etc.

Sorry USA, you are missing out on the best sport on the planet.

i see England-USA ,and was good "partido",wednesday our team start,i hope that this world cup come from Spain,we have the best team in years.

The Rob Green howler is set to be a youtube favorite.

From the match commentary on The Telegraph:

Steven Gerrard: "We didn't get what we deserved. The idea tonight was to win the game, but we couldn't go on and get the winner. We need to get behind Robert."

21.29 I'd say somebody needs to get behind Robert Green. He's not going to save those shots by himself.
I was watching. No comment

I think Spain have a great chance of going all the way this year, they always do. Hopefully England can come back from this terrible first result...
USA played like one of the Big Boys today. England seemed to always have 4 players in front of either goal when the ball was near. Good Game
post #13 of 176
I think our friends from across the pond deserve a lot of credit. They seem to have an astute coach who had an intelligent game plan. All credit to them for a battling performance.

England - no comment.

My tip - Holland (probably this kiss of death for them).
Typical result in the US/Engerland match: England look unorganized and get punished by a howler from their keeper. (Where's calamity James when you need him?). US squeak by with a draw.
I watched England - USA, too. No comment indeed. So far the best performances have come from Argentina (no surprises here) and South Korea (see, how they run! )
Hmmmm ... was hoping the Slovenia vs Algeria game would end in a tie. Makes the next USA game against Slovenia more interesting.
Vamos Argentina Carajo!!!!!!

So far matches were not interesting....
the best so far, imho, Argentina and South Korea....

i am watching Ghana and Servia right now and, I must say that I am very dissapointed with Serbia...I had high hopes for that team.

Good luck to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pablo
Germany looked frighteningly competent.
With serbia losing, it makes it all the more important that England win their group. Which could be tricky..
Yes, I was very impressed with Germany. So far I have enjoyed all the games I have watched, SA-Mexico, USA-England, France-Uruguay, Germany-Australia.

I love this game!

Buena Suerte!

England's starting 11 earns more in a week than the USA side earns in a year...

Boosh, I'd be glad to take your money.

Germany...

WOW!!!

I felt bad for the Aussie's side...

I'd love to see an underdog take it all so...

Go Uruguay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excited about Ivory Coast. They have two HUGE games coming up. Against Portugal today (15th), and in five days, they're playing Brazil. I really wish them luck.
LOL @ Green howler. As someone who follows the English Premier League, and having spent some years in UK, naturally I have a soft spot for England. But with John Terry and Jamie Carragher moving like glaciers at the back, a snowball has a better chance surviving hell than England does at winning the World Cup.

This Cup, I'm rooting for the Orange Army. Go Holland!!

My husband took the day off so we're going downtown to an ex-pat Brit pub to watch the South Africa/Uruguay match this afternoon. Should be a lot of fun. Those hooters keep driving me from the room, though. Grrrr...

WOW! That was unexpected. Torres didn't look very good today, he may take a while to get going. Can't believe Spain didn't win, you were piling on the pressure all the way through. Well done Switzerland!

It's del Bosque's fault.

Playing both Xabi Alonso and Busquets was unnecessary, and the side looked much better once the latter came off. If the intention was to keep a fit-again Iniesta as a winger, surely Cesc would have offered a bit more thrust through the center?

You'll be fine, although Chile are probably 50-50 to win the group now, which probably means Brazil for you in the Round of 16.

I am a little surprised at how important the counterattack has been through the first games of the group phase. It's a lot to do with many teams playing a lone forward supported by quick midfield players whilst defending deep without the ball, but still... And counters will probably be even more important as teams start pushing up to try and win late in matches in order to get out of the groups. Something to keep an eye on.

EDIT: I should add, full credit to Switzerland for their gritty performance and opportunism. The goalkeeper was superb.

Have you not learnt to ignore them yet? It's like there's a huge swarm of bees around the stadium.
I still think England have as good a chance as any, especially after Spain today. What do you think JON RODGERS? (I have £10 on England to win the cup)

Good luck to South Africa later...

Despite all their possession, Spain couldn't finish. It was like watching Inter Milan vs Barcelona..

Spain are going to be much better from here on out; there too many European Championship and Champions League winners medals in that dressing room for them not to play themselves into form.

England need to get Gareth Barry fit, start David James, take the shackles off of Gerrard, actually use Joe Cole, bring Crouch off of the bench late and keep Heskey on it until at least the knockout stages.

My England XI: James, Johnson, Carra, Terry, Cashley, Lennon, Barry, Lampard, J. Cole, Gerrard, Rooney.

Slovenia have been talking up their chances against the States. Good luck to 'em but it isn't going to happen. Manager Bob Bradley is going to be tempted to play the same lineup as against England but he ought to perhaps consider tucking either Clint Dempsey or Landon Donovan in behind Altidore up front and using Robbie Findley's pace off of the bench; I would like someone who is slightly less of a headless chicken and can actually pass in the side, like Stuart Holden or even Benny Feilhaber.

Highlight of the tournament so far: Tshabalala leathering South Africa's opener against Mexico into the top corner, as well as the pandemonium and goal celebration that followed. (I wish I could find a video of Archbishop Desmond Tutu dancing in the stands after that goal!)

Good luck again to South Africa, on this of all days. I think Forlán and Suárez might just nick it for the two-times champions but I sure hope not.

Capello has said that Barry is a definite starter on Friday. That should shift the team around a bit, although it may end up with Gerrard playing on the left wing. He's also undecided as to who will start in goal, James or Green and who will accompany Rooney up front, Heskey or Defoe.

I want Capello to take a risk and play Rooney as lone striker with Gerrard just behind him. That leaves Lampard, Barry and Lennon able to play with (possibly) the greatest left winger England has ever seen, Joe Cole. Joe Cole is too good a player to keep on the bench!

Emlynevermore, you really know your stuff!

I'm reserving judgement for now. A lot is dependant on whether England pick up any further injuries, particularly in defence (It's beyond me why King even got on the plane - he was an accident waiting to happen). I wasn't too happy with the amount of long ball tactics utilised against the USA - they stifled our midfield far too easily. England will qualify but need to move up a gear thereafter and Gerrard definitely has to be given a free role. Spain will improve, as will Brazil. I am not sure how England will fare later in the competiton against one of the teams who are adept at incisive , one-touch, possesion football.
As things stand at the moment I have to go with zztopp and Diamondflame. The heart says England - the head says Holland. Here's hoping your £10 proves to be a worthwhile investment.

Comrades, I am seriously loving this team. Fascinating blast from the past, really.

edit: Naturally no pun intended, but all of my sympathy in on them (the football team) and I hope they will kick Portugals ass.
The horns were not as maddening in the pub as they are at home for some reason. More bodies in there taking up space so less room for the swarm buzzing to echo around probably. I wanted South Africa to win because I thought it would have been nice for the host country to win, but Uruguay were the supermen.

Argentina looked excellent going forward in the first half but have been generally sloppy defensively since Walter Samuel went off injured. More worryingly, Mascherano has looked a bit off the pace...and that never happens. Interesting that Veron is sat on the bench. [EDIT: Just seen he has a calf injury] Poor Kun Aguero can't get a sniff.

They have great haircuts. A part of me wishes they had all worn black boots as well, preferably homespun and handmade.

I am so exited bout our (argie) performance today...Kun Aguero, Messi, Tevez, Mascherano, Pipita Higuain....pure magic.

COngratulation to our Uruguayan brothers.....too.

A disgraceful performance by France - where's the national pride? Mexico were great, they have some top players who play for teams such as Arsenal, Barcelona and ManUtd.
Great football being played!!
Congratulations to all the winners. I feel bad for France, they usually have a good team. I think they are having some crisis within the team.
I did not watch the whole game, but I was at a restaurant when Mexico scored twice and they looked very good, the crowd went crazy at the bar, in front of the tv. I recorded the game, I will watch before going to sleep.

Mexico deserved to win. France maybe for the first 15 minutes played a good passing game, but for the most part, Mexico were the ones playing cohesively. The first goal is more off-side than not, IMO, but they still deserved to win, definitely. Player for player, the French seem to set the better individual standard at their own respective clubs, so it is frustrating when they just don't seem to gel.
Mexican team was great last night! And their fans popping bottles of bubbly, wearing fabulously outlandish gear: wrestling masks, feathers, glitter the lot!
What about Germany?? They looked unstoppable against Australia, they looked terrible today. Maybe the shockingly bad referee put them in a negative mind set? Well done Serbia...

Come on England, tonight!!

Have to agree, Df. Boosh, your tenner is in serious danger of going up in smoke, mate. No cohesion in midfield and no cutting edge up front. Even when we did get into the box we chose the wrong option. Thought the French were bad but I reckon this debacle was worse. 3 Lions ? - more like 11 kittens. I'm off to bed.....

Loved the US's fighting spirit. Embarrassed by Englands utterly poor performance. Rooney is falling alarmingly behind Messi in this world cup - the gulf is growing big. And why the heck is Heskey playing?

The Germans got hosed; Klose should never have been booked the second time for what in reality was a nothing foul. Ridiculous. Podolski had a 'mare but Mesut Özil continues to amaze me. They'll be fine, regardless.

Onyewu was rubbish against the Slovenians, who executed their gameplan to perfection in the first half. Well-pleased with Landon and Bradley. Dempsey was too quiet. Altidore needs to play his size more often, because good things happen when he does. I hasten to add that Bob Bradley should have listened to me and started the game with Robbie Findley on the bench and an extra passing midfielder (Feilhaber, as it happened) in his stead. Maybe then we would have been 2-0 up before twice conceding stupidly...

I didn't see a whole lot of England-Algeria but I will say this: the point of playing Emile Heskey up front is that he can make the whole team--but especially Rooney--better. If Rooney continues to be rubbish, then Capello must either figure out a way to get everyone to play better or just drop Heskey altogether and play Rooney up on his own with Gerrard behind him. Seriously, it is astonishing to me that a side with as many players who potentially scare the living daylights out of the opposition as England have can play so unimaginatively that not even one of those players is able to shine. Sort it out, Capello.

Also, Nadir Belhadj has played amazing each of the half-dozen or so times I have seen him play.

I get the feeling the Dutch are going to destroy Japan. And surely Australia cannot be as poor tomorrow as they were in their opener?

I shouldn't say such things....

Good thing I don't work Saturdays....

I'd hate to be English today. Rooney & Capello will be eeking out an existance in that trailer park soon. Germany got railroaded by a Spanish ref but we will triumph against Ghana and move on!

So far, latin american teams are doing great, with good football and big balls....

At Longleat safari park, that is.

This is going to be a South American cup...

Brasil is hammering CDI...
Poor performance by Ivory Coast, however Brazil weren't that great either. Fabiano clearly handled the ball TWICE to score his second goal. It was strange the referee and the linesmen let it pass. Also Drogba was fouled in the penalty area with the defender pulling his shirt. Kaka deserved to be sent off. He was provoked, but that wasn't an appropriate reaction.
Viewing the video again. I think Keita should have been sent off too. Kaka did hit him, yes, but he really didn't need to act like this.
A disgraceful game for any young fan watching ... too many stud tackles, fake dives, a half-blind ref and other stuff in the Brazil - Ivory Coast game. When a quiet, nice "Gods man" guy such as Kaka is provoked into a red card you know things have gone too far...
