Non-basenotes approved fragrances you like.

Thread Starter
Thanks to great recommendations here, I've picked up a bunch of amazing fragrances that I just luurve. However, I must say that I have some guilty pleasures that many basenoters might not approve. These are mine, and which are yours?

1. Contradiction for men
This is the third fragrance I'd bought before I got into fragrances, and to be frank, I left it to the SA to help me choose. But I got to love it and in a way, it got me to appreciate the combination of citrus and spices and I started looking for it in other fragrances. Now, I have a problem with the synthetic tinge of the fragrance that sometimes gag me, but I haven't yet found another fragrance that blends the two polar opposites without having them clash, for eg. Orange Spice.

2. Antidote
To be honest, this one is one fragrance that I blind bought, mainly because I loved the look of the bottle. But when I tried it, I was taken aback that I actually like it. The thing about it that gets me going is that it's a fresh fragrance that avoids most conventional 'fresh' notes and in fact smells absolutely unlike anything I've tried. I think one of the problems that people have with this fragrance is that there are many notes listed in the pyramid and none of them can be easily distinguished. I agree with this, but at the same time, I just find myself very intrigued by the scent.

I can think of a couple of frags I like that don't get much love on basenotes:

1. Chrome Legend- I think this is a great flanker of the original Chrome. Different from the original, and worth of attention.
2. Davidoff Echo- I used to like this one a lot. Not longer have a bottle, but I would love to get it as a gift.

I thought it was interesting that you mentioned Contradiction. I made a Youtube video last night on Preferred
Stock . I said it was basicaly a poor man's Contradiction. So now I will be doing a video soon on Contradiction
to explore this idea a bit more deeply.

I always perceived One Man Show by Jacques Bogart as a frag which is not quite favored here on Basenotes, yet, to my nose, it always smelled great and which I would enjoy owning someday

Roberto Cavalli Man. Bashed on Basenotes but I love it.

Davidoff Silver Shadow

Just Cavalli Him....
beautiful longlasting citrus-ginger blend!! I love it.

Bond N° 9 West Broadway.... love the flowery woody resinous brew...

cheers

Many inexpensive ones considered as not pertaining the tastes of well-trained noses, as well as local ones, be it original or knock-offs which happen to be better than the originals.

For me, it would have to be Guerlain Homme. I'm not sure exactly why this scent is so reviled on basenotes. It is the perfect light summery fragrance that has depth and is different. If it was made by Versace or Gucci it wouldn't get anywhere near the negatives it gets.

Many Basenoters seem pretty unanimous in agreeing that modern Youth Dew isn't half as good as it used to be. They're probably quite right, but I still like wearing the modern stuff!

Vetiver Tonka.

It barely, if ever, makes the ' what's your favourite vetiver' lists and I've seen it panned often enough. Fact of the matter is I am not a big fan of vetiver as a note despite owning a couple of 'the faves', but VT just works for me.

Bvlgari BLV (+Notte) - They are gorgeous, stylish fragrances but many BNers describe it as 'disgusting' 'intoxicating' , etc etc.

ADG

I dont care what anyone says on here. Its one of the best smelling fragrances ever, just ask 95% of the population.

serge noire, a never remminded serge lutens.

I don't remember reading Antidote being bashed on here, nevertheless I really like it too. My others that aren't generally liked around here are AdG and D&G Light Blue.

While I did not replace my bottle when it was empty, I still like Hugo by Hugo Boss.
For me it's Photo by Lagerfeld.

AdG
LB Roma Uomo

Floris Elite
Ralph Lauren Polo Sport

DG light blue
Hugo

Alfred Sung Hei.
Lauder Intuition.

OK, neither of these even comes close to breaking new ground, but they're both well-made, inoffensive, versatile fragrances. Hei can be had for $20 for a 100ml bottle and is a great value as far as I'm concerned.

Can Can Paris Hilton,
Hidden Fantasy and
Curious by Spears.

I like Antidote too.

ADG seems to be despised because it's so popular. I think it's a great daytime cologne that's not too 'heavy' to wear in the heat of the day and I live in Phoenix, AZ area so I deal with heat often enough. I prefer something else at night though.

I don't base what I like upon whether or not Basenotes members like it. That's up to you. 100%.

Kenneth Cole Reaction

I don't need Basenotes or anyone's approval to wear fragrances. That's why I still enjoy Polo Sport.

Gio Pour Homme by Armani.....I don't wear it all the time.....but there are times when it sounds good.....Hated here at Basenotes for sure.....Gary

I don't care what anyone says anywhere, besides that, maybe it's because 95% of the population doesn't have a good fragrance knowledge, so it's quite understandable that they think AdG is the best smelling cologne.

Don't get me wrong now, I love Acqua Di Gio, but I really doubt more than 5% of basenoters will rank it as the #1. (I'm in the 95%, btw)

I never said it was the best smelling fragrance. I said its one of them and I beleive thats true.

Also, good fragrance knowledge or not if something smells good it smells good regardless of how many people think so.

Not many people love Chanel Gardenia but I do...Luca Turin calls it an 'airport floral' - right- if only all airports smelt of Chanel .............

So AdG is good because 95% of the non-Basenotes population loves it, but something can be good regardless of how many people like it?

Way to contradict yourself.

Ultimately, and in reality, I think Basenotes inherently approves any fragrances you like.

Hugo Boss Dark Blue - for dating and clubbing, can't go wrong with it
Boss in motion Black - casual, dating, gym, work, it's just great
Azzaro Silver Black/Onyx - retro, masculine, got ˝what are you wearing?˝ so many times
Cerruti 1881 Black - sweet oriental with great longevity and sillage
Cerruti Pour Homme - spicy aromatic, seductive, got many compliments
Hugo by Hugo Boss - bashed, but really not all that bad
Davidoff Silver Shadow Private - really nice oriental for romantic occasions
Bruno Banani Magic Man - really not bad fragrance, you'd be surprised, could never tell it's a cheapo!

Egoiste Platinum seems to get bashed by a lot of basenoters, seem to favor Egoiste instead. EP is one of my all-time favs, Egoiste makes me feel ill.

(I like this attitude!) My guilty pleasure is YSL L'Homme, which has been widely disliked here.

ADG is not Basenotes-approved?? That's a shocker.

How about this baby:

Platinum is so vile on my skin and to my nose...but it doesn't mean it is not a unique and quality fragrance. Egoiste is beautiful.

I don't care what fragrances Basenotes approves of. The idea is absurd anyway, although many people are desperate for a sense of belonging.

I just care about what I like.

Bvlgari BLV. Not really hated here, though, but always underrated IMO

Although in regards to the spirit of the OP's question:

Versace - Green Jeans (this is the one that led me to basenotes)
Lanvin - Vetyver (nice clean all-day scent)
Azzaro - Pure Vetiver (strong clean masculine white floral)
Azzaro - Pure Lavende ( strong musty lavender & tobacco - to me)
