Looking for a masculine vanilla scent....suggestions?

Thread Starter
I have tried Tobacco Vanile by Tom Ford, and while I liked it, didn't love it (like most Tom Ford) especially at that price. Sampled today Serge Lutens Bois de Vanille, and while I do like it, can't help but feel their might be a more masculine take on this note.....

Another I had looked to try but couldn't find was L'Artisian Havana Vanille.

Does anybody have any other suggestions or recommendations for a good masculine vanilla? Thanks!

Oh, one more thing: in your opinion (if you are of the seasonal/occasion frag mindset), when do you think is the best season and/or occasion for a vanilla scent?

Boucheron's Jaipur. Exotic, masculine, refined and vanilla.
Givenchy Pi - quite masculine, it has a lot of benzoin wich emulates vanilla-ish aura, but benzoin is much deeper.

YSL Body Kouros - benzoin again
JPG Le Male - vanilla
Mouchoire de monseur.. vanilla , lavender , civet and citrus.
Pour un homme : lavender and vanilla
Pi : i hate it

Guerlain Habit Rouge
Guerlain Jicky
Guerlain Spirituese Double Vanille
By Kilian A Taste of Heaven
Bulgari Black
Bois 1920 Sandalo e The

And if you venture to the Women's side...Guerlain Shalimar, Guerlain Eau de Shalimar.

Vanilla can be worn any time, IMO. When it might seem more seasonal is when it is in heavy compositions which are very cloying in warm weather.

"Masculine" is subjective. It would be better to describe which notes you'd like with your vanilla. Have you tried Rochas Lui? If so, where does that one stand in your assessment of frags of this type? That would provide some sense of what you might be seeking.
I've also been looking for a nice vanilla. Opinions here seem to be divided on Pi, but apparently women tend to like the smell on a man. I might give this one a closer look.
Bvlgari Black
It's unisex, but i think it's more masculine
post #9 of 51
Pi is something I have worn and got compliments on quite abit. One of my lady friends in the throws of passion told me that the scent suits me perfectly and she just loves it. What's weird about it is the extreme drydown, like the next day, when I smell the T-Shirt I was wearing it smells almost like a campfire. Since I like to camp it actually is nice but it is definitely surprising.

Although I wouldn't consider Pi overly masculine.
I think Lomani Ignition deserves a mention. A more masculine vanilla than Givenchy Pi IMO.
I always get compliments from women when I wear "Pi".

For myself, I prefer Guerlain's SDV. Vanilla with a nice hit of tobacco.

Bulgari Black has a "rubber" note that I find annoying.

Pi and Jaipur Homme are not vanilla frags. If you like benzoin or heliotrope, that's fine, but this thread is supposed to be about vanilla.
Of all the frags which have been mentioned I'd HEAVILY and whole-heartedly recommend l'Artisan's Havana Vanille. It's just wonderful. Very deep and (IMO) masculine, maybe it's the tobacco which swings it to the masculine side, not sure. Anyway, if you haven't experienced it, it's definitely worth a try.

Tihota by Indult- good vanilla - unisex.
Redundant remarks here: Habit Rouge, Shalimar, Jaipur, Body Kouros, Le Mâle, I can get some vanilla + heavy doses of musk in Gaultier2, Pour Un Homme and... one of my favorite blends, which is Lavender EO plus vanilla. No, it is not the same as Caron's PUH, albeit a wonderful concoction nonetheless.
I put on Pi today--not impressed. Generic sweetness with a feminine waft of...something. Two thumbs down.

I can't wait to get my decant of Body Kouros.
Three with vanilla.

More votes: Mouchoir de Monsieur and Habit Rouge.

Also, Caron's Pour Un Homme, a lovely lavender vanilla.
L'Instant pour Homme. That's a vanilla for guys (with chocolate).
I tried
Tabacco Vanille- Im with you, I like it but not love it. I am also picky with the Tabacco note because I dont smoke. That could mess with me if not done right.
SDV- I like it a whole lot. I almost love it. Its Vanilla Extract, spices and woody. I honestly felt like they took M7 and dumped a bunch a vanilla in it. It is very hard to wear..IMO..my girl thinks it smells like old ladies.
Havana Vanille- Is the only one of these I will buy...Its weird, it smells like Dr Pepper, Vanilla and Cloves....BAMB...I love it.

I pick up a lot of vanilla in A-Men but it seem like that's just me. But I don't think you can talk vanilla without a nod to Comptoir Sud Pacifique- they built a brand on it.
L'Artisan Havana Vanille, of course because it smells quite masculin, exotic, complex, and enjoyable.

L'Occitane Eau des Baux because it is cheap but great. A smoky, dry vanille scents that is so wonderful and lasts all day.

Guerlain Habit Rouge Beau Cavalier because it is a timeless vanille scent. It is not all about simple vanille, but thick and dark, rich and beautiful.

And I'll throw in a new one...
my choice is 1725 Casanova by Histoires de Parfums
post #31 of 51
+1 Le Male. Or cheaper alternatives Cuba Gold and 360 White. Also I hear Ignition is supposed to be one of the better vanillas out there, but I'm not sure if it's masculine or not. Raw Vanilla by Coty is actually one of my favorite vanilla's but most who have smelled that would agree that it's uni, although marketed to men. It definitley approaches vanilla differently than the majority, it's like a very natural vanilla combined with fresh cut grass.

Parfumerie Generale Felanilla

M. Micallef Gaïac -- has a lot of vanilla to my nose, but it's much more than that and OH so good.
Bogart Pour Homme - sweet pipe tobacco, affordable, strong!
+1 on 1725 (Casanova) by Histoires de Parfums though it's not exactly a vanilla-dominant scent

Also try:
Jicky by Guerlain
Pour Un Homme by Caron
Arpege pour Homme
Two very nice vanilla dominant fragrances in my wardrobe are 360 White for Men by Perry Ellis and Ignition by Lomani. I personally only wear these two fragrances when the temperatures outside here are freezing or below (my preference for vanilla-dominant frags).
I would add Rochas Man, which is a very close relative of A*men, just sweeter, lighter and bit more refined. Fairly easy to find on line, not easy to find on shelves, but absolutely worth a sniff. Rochas Lui is far more refined and elegant, but scarcely available.
Maybe Tom Ford Black Orchid? I don't like it, but it's got a good load of vanilla in it.
For a sheer and light vanilla, try DKNY Pure, although addressed to a female audience, it's a fairly unisex scent.

Vanilia - L'Artisan Parfumeur

In the late 70s, long before both were released commercially, bottles each of Givenchy Pi and Egoiste fell into a basin and got broken. The hapless owner tried to salvage as much as possible. Raw vanilla pod essence was later used to replace the benzoin from Pi. Vanilia was the result [note to reader: salt. pinches...] Vanilla pod-dominant (not sweet at all) and sandalwood galore. Beautiful. Masculine - certainly not as sweet as Le Male or L'Instant.
Another echo for Habit Rouge.
Also for Caron Pour Un Homme.

My favorite though is SDV. It is marketed as a feminine, I believe, but that doesn't bother me.

PdN Vanille Intense - Vanilla and Incense. Very well done. You might also want to check out PdN's Tonka Vanille. I little lighter on the vanilla with some tangerine and lime thrown in.

Oooh, Vanilla and Incense. After Shalimar, I'm now hooked onto smoky vanillas. Looks like I need to try this next

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MALE! its vanilla vanilla vanilla!

Givenchy Pi is like a marshmallow-y vanilla

John Varvatos is leathery vanilla in the drydown

A*Men is a weird patchouli, chocolate, coffee vanilla
post #45 of 51
Well other than the obvious SDV, my favorite is Eau de Baux. To get a true vanilla note, unfortunately you need to go to niche because there doesn't really exist one in the current designer market.

+1 for Jaipur and Habit Rouge.
L'Artisan Havana Vanille
Musc Ravageur
L'occitane Eau des Baux
Creed Sublime Vanille, of course. It's very, very smooth vanilla. Too bad about that $550 price tag. At least treat yourself to a sample if you're in a Neiman's.

Another favorite: Dior Homme Intense. Oh my, it is so addictively good. . . you have been warned. . .

Best season for vanilla: chilly weather, but if you like vanilla enough to ask this question, go ahead and wear it anytime. Just go light on it in warm weather.

Jaipur, Edt or EdP I think fit this category best
