Best of Patchouli-based Oriental Intoxicating Scents

Hello,

I've been reading and researching here for months and I want to say this is one of the best sites, in general, on the world wide web. I do not yet have an educated nose and extensive fragrance vocabulary, but share a passion with you all for fragrance.

I am an unrepentant patchouli lover. I like it from hippie head shop to a thread in a heady oriental tapestry.

Sometimes I'll smell a fragrance on a passing woman that is clearly patch, but also black pepper, a hint of citrus at the top, pine and moss, a little vanilla or praline.

Like Opium meets Aromatics Elixir meets (vintage) Givenchy Gentleman but for women. It's deeply oriental and exotic. And it's not Angel, it's more of a dirty-earthy smell.

I'd love to know from the well-immersed, here, if this sounds anything like a scent that you know of.

If not, I'd appreciate any good patchouli-redolent fragrance recommendations -- apart from Angel.

I want something that is like uncorking the spice trade.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Jillita and welcome to Basenotes!

Spicy orientals with patchouli:

Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier George Sand
Youth Dew
Youth Dew Amber Nude
Cinnabar
Frederic Malle Noir Epices - bone dry rather than sweet, more of a chypre-oriental hybrid than a straight oriental

If you're open to trying masculines, Guerlain's Heritage is a spicy, woody oriental with a fantastic patch note.

Chanel Coromandel is a great patchouli although the spices are soft, muted.
Etro Patchouly is a dry, airy yet earthy patchouli.
Molinard Patchouli is a soft, round, rich and sweet patchouli, with an almost chocolatey undertone.

There are lots more; these were first to come to mind.

The first thing it comes on my mind is Jungle L'Éléphant by Kenzo;Cardamon, cloves and caraway spices on a patchouli base !

Sounds like Youth Dew by Estee Lauder to me. Very patch prominent, it's been popular for years with women and it's extremely affordable and potent as sh*t.

I'm assuming it's not Opium, which IMO is much more amber prominent?

Wow, wonderful replies, all. I happened on an interesting twist to Youth Dew, which was a Tom Ford update, Youth Dew Amber Nude. It is supposedly more spicy than Youth Dew and I bit the bullet to try it. The notes are ginger, patch, carnation, chocolate, vanilla, and basically it's everything I was thinking of. Will report back if this works.

And, to Mike Perez, I have been wearing Opium since 1980! Yes, that scent is a mainstay of my winter wardrobe.

The Serge Lutens and Kenzo L'Elephant are also promising. Love the Perfumed Court site; superb compliment to this one.

Seriously, though, great responses. Will keep on the hunt...

I have to second Chanel Coromandel! It is the best patchouli fragrance as far as my nose is concerned.

You can try also L'Artisan Patchouli Patch.
