A serious thread about fragrances with 'fecal matter'

Thread Starter
I'm not joking or trolling here, when I was a youngster there was some kind of fragrance that smelled identically to fecal matter, and it was used as a prank to spray people's butts so the others would think they crapped themselves. It was pretty idiotic, I agree, but I was wondering how was it made ?

Really how can you make a fragrance out of that?

I apologize if you find this thread disgusting and gross, my intention is to learn more about how certain fragrances are made.

Skatole, perhaps? I've heard it's extremely rank.

Ah yes, when I was much younger, there was this neighbourhood shop near wear I stayed that sold all sorts of prank toys/gadgets. Stink Bombs that came as liquid in small glass vials and "Fart gas" in a aerosol canister were sold. I bought them on numerous occasions then. Your thread made me google on them. Found on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stink_bomb

Skatole is listed as one of the ingredients. I googled skatole and it does seem that Sugandaraja might just be right.

My understanding is that a lot of frags have such molecules, but in very small amounts. On the other hand, many frags have quite a bit of civet or castoreum. Often, jasmine has some indoles or skatoles. I don't know whether any of these are usually synthetic or come from natural sources. We need an "expert" to chime in here.

It was probably some variant of sulfur.

In checking what skatole is, I read its wikipedia article which mentions that it is added to cigarettes as "a flavoring ingredient."

I have heard of civet called "cat butt."

This article is always worth a read:
