Directory Search / results update

Thread Starter
I'll be rehauling the directory search / results function tonight. If any of you have any suggestions on how is works at the moment then please comment.

(This doesnt relate to the actual fragrance pages, just the search & results page)

So if you have any ideas on how to make these better, let me know and I'll see what I can add while recoding.

Why
? In case you're wondering why I'm doing this, it is because the fragrance search is one of the most server intensive things on the site. Anything I can do to lighten the load will have a greater impact on stopping server crashes etc... cheers

Here are some recommendations:

(1) If there is a unique match, go directly to the fragrance as opposed to a list with the single fragrance on it. That would in such cases reduce the number of operator actions by 50%, assuming they selected the single fragrance.

(2) This won't improve the search, but output. Alphabetizing doesn't work perfectly. To be precise, if I search for a fragrance with Vetiver in the name, Vetiver Oriental appears before Vetiver. In a regular dictionary it would be the opposite.

(3) Allow quotes in names for a string match. Not essential, but a nice feature.

(4) A feature I would love: the ability to search on number of postive, neutral and negative reviews. For example, if I wanted to find a fragrance with at least 20 positve reviews and no more than 5 negative reviews, that would be neat to have. Or no more than 1 postive, at least 5 neutrals and exactly 3 negatives. More of an analytical tool, but one I would LOVE to have!

Ditto number one above. 97% of the time when I'm doing a search, I'm looking for the fragrance listing. (one way to present this would be to have two search fields at top right. One: fragrance listing search, Two: general search. This would be easy and fast and avoid the complicated Advanced Search)

Also, a glitch -- when I am in, for example, page two of search results, and click on a link, then go BACK, it goes back to page one of search results, instead of page two (or where ever I was last)

I would love to see the review totals on the results page, so when I'm researching a house I can tell at a glance which fragrances are the most highly regarded and go directly to those individual fragrance pages to read the reviews. I spend a lot of time looking for reviews for fragrance that have none, and I'd rather just skip those pages.

Amaranthine - 4 positive | 3 neutral | 1 negative
Artemesia - 7 positive | 4 neutral | negative
Blenheim Bouquet - 33 positive | 10 neutral | 3 negative

Thanks for asking!

I always thought the search "input" page was clunky. Here's a research study intended to identify the best designs for user filled forms. A number of the ideas presented would be helpful to clean it up.

Thanks all. I'm reading that article now docmancc. looks very interesting

Progress update
: I'm making it so that variants of brand names are in the list, so you'll find Dunhill in the 'D's and also the 'A's (as Alfred Dunhill)

is there any way to be able to do sorts based on various criteria, like house, frag name, rating (eg a ratio of good to bad), etc?
Ie, I could search for a certain perfumer's work, but I may get a huge list.

There could also be a few other pieces of info displayed, like number of views, number of reviews, average rating, etc... I'm picturing Badger & Blade's review section.

For that "notes" triangle portion of the search, sometimes I'm not really sure wHAT I can enter exactly, so maybe like a pulldown tab? (I'm picturing on the back end just references the whole list of any note ever entered for all frags, sorted and only with unique ID's),
plus maybe just after the note in the pulldown in brackets a list of the number of frags with that note (ie is Bergamot a better search term then Orange)
- if you're really feeling adventurous, How about groupings of notes. Ie if I'm looking for an orange note, maybe I don't really care if it's bergamot or orange, so I can just click on a higher level title.

How about in the note triangle text field, if a string starts with a minus/dash, that note will be excluded from results.

So:

Lemon, lavender, -vanilla

Would list everything that has lemon and lavender and not vanilla.

This might be a big coding job, but it's the only thing I feel the directory search is missing.
