Eau de Baux by L'Occitane

I walked by a L'Occitane store yesterday and decided to stop in. I sprayed Eau de Baux on a tester strip and then on my arm. It took me all of two sniffs before I got that all too rare gut feeling compelling me to purchase a full bottle. This has only happened to me maybe three or four times that I can remember, and never with such a cheap fragrance ($50 for a 3.4oz bottle, including tax).

Eau de Baux is smooth, natural and easy to wear. It avoids the cliches and overall feeling of "cheapness" that seem to pervade many designer scents and, in my opinion, holds its own against fragrances costing three or four times as much. It wears fairly close to the skin, but does project a bit, and the longevity seems to be very good. It's linear, and that's a good thing here. Also, it seems to be extremely versatile--I could see wear it year-round in any setting (day/night, office, etc.).

It was thrilling to discover such an unexpected treat that costs so little. I see this one making its way into my regular rotation from this point forward.

IMO Eau des Baux and Vettiveru are the best $50 buys out there.

I think it's simple (not in a bad way), though I'm not sure I'd call it linear. I find that somewhat sharp incense in the beginning mellows out and a vanilla develops a few hours later. I like that it progresses but not in an overly complex way.

my one criticism of L'Occitane frags are that I find them somewhat "raw", like unrefined. They're all a little to sharp IMO, but I can see why that appeals to some. EdB was one of my first FB purchases BTW. I just loved it, and have actually given away most of my bottle as decants since so many people wanted to try it.

Good point. I'm smelling it right now on my wrist and I agree that it does progress somewhat to a more vanilla-centric scent.

Then I'll have to get my hands on some Vettiveru! However, since I'm generally not a big fan of vetiver scents, I'm not all that optimistic.

Keep 'em coming, Brad.
You're top ten is what I have been trying out for myself!
So far this has resulted in a purchase of New Haarlem.

Not to get off topic, but I don't think you will like Vettiveru. Try Eau Illuminee -ParfumsDelRae if you get a chance. Something tells me you may appreciate it alot.

Oh that's awesome! Hope you're enjoying NH! Have you tried Lumiere Noire or Usiku yet? I would highly recommend both.

Will do. Thank you so much for the recommendation.

Just wore it together with Dior Homme and got a compliment

However, it stands tall on its own. I really do like it and will get a back-up bottle soon.

I actually just purchased a bottle of EdB about half an hour ago. Got it for $40usd. That's an absolute steal relative to my recent purchases. It's a blind buy, but I'm not too concerned as I've never heard anything negative about this fragrance. Can't wait!!!

Eav Des Bavx and Bowling Green are the 2 biggest bargains in my drobe. Baux smells like it could be a sober Lutens, Ford, or Montale. And Bowling Green smells like one small basenote away from a late eighties Creed/Hermes scent.

Also good news for those who put off buying Eav Des Bavx. L'Occitane finally took some of the tonka/vanilla out of the base in the newer bottles of Eav Des Bavx. It's more incense/woody now, yet still sweet. Dunno if it's an indicator or not, but I like my new drier/woodier bottle alot more than the old one I swapped out, and it's stamped "5526 A087"

I'm happy to hear that - I loved the top and middle, but the base was too sweet for me. I'll have to try the new formulation.

A sweet vanilla spice scent and affordable. A touch of cypress. I enjoy Eau des Baux. This is an often overlooked gem.
