Alien (1979)

Never saw this when it was released (I was 9 yrs old at the time!). And wow, this scares the Bejeezus out of you, doesn't it? Quite a lethal and effective sci-fi / thriller - not at all like the slash-n-rip horror genres that Hollywood releases these days. The alien landscape, at the beginning of the movie, which was art-directed and styled by HR Giger is just amazing. I can't wait to watch the other 3 films now.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (or 'Les parapluies de Cherbourg' if you're a purist).

Loved it.

Just returned from seeing the latest Harry Potter at the cinema. It was OK. I think if you haven't read the books (like me) it's difficult to make sense of it all, and you do get the feeling that you're missing a lot of backstory. My son, who has read all the books, thinks so too. Second half was better than the first, but some of it was really quite tedious.

Finally saw Inception. I'm hardly a fan of Block Busters, but this one is nothing short of brilliant.

That's the name! Writing it down now. I'd like to see that when it's available to rent. We rarely go to the actual cine-plex. It makes my husband too cranky, hee!

Sorry I didn't reply earlier...it is so different from those that it's hard to make a comparison. It's more of a very odd fairy tale than a drama. If I had to place it, I'd say...better than Aquatic, not quite as good as Tenenbaums.

S, you might want to check out The Book of Eli as well! The cinematography is very grim and grey (the sequences I must add, are pretty bleeding good!), but the story is about the Christian faith and hope. One of the better2010 releases IMO! I really enjoyed it. I think I might get the soundtrack, I was quite absorbed. C-:

I'm not much of a cinema person myself haha, I hoard dvds. C-:

thank you, LiveJazz, although it's hard for me to imagine it's better than the life aquatic. cannot wait to watch it all the same.

I watched Gallipoli last night, featuring a very young Mel Gibson. Before he flipped and started barking at the moon....

I just saw Precious on DVD.

I saw it at the cinema when it was running there,
and didn't think much of it, well, actually, I thought
it was quite over the top - way too much!
But this time, OMG, I cried like a baby.

I'm such a sissy!

I saw Unstoppable this past Saturday and thought it was worth the $7 to see it in the theater. The movie has a slow build of tension and the music is an especially well used element in making you sit on the edge of your seat.

The trailer caught my eye.... wondering if I should hit the theater.... or buy/rent the dvd when it's out.

I almost doing 2 dvds a night now, I need to spend more time on work, but...

Anyways, I just saw The Other Guys and Cop Out on DVD, mindless humor, works for me!

Moon (2009)

Great movie with a great performance by Sam Rockwell

Toy Story 3 at home. I think incinerating Woody and co would have made a fine ending to the series, but hey, that's just me.

This is quite over-the-top gore and warp.

Almost as good as the original Get Carter or The Limey. Fantastic.

One of my personal favourites, but it always wrecks me too much to watch it very many times a year -- usually once is enough.

I've got three:

1. The Fall (2006) by Tarsem. Indescribable. 5 stars http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/
scroll down for the trailer

2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2010) Another 5 stars, even if I keep hearing that the book was better. Has anyone not seen this one?

3. The Bad Lieutenant (2009) Take every cliche about crooked cops films--but add Werner Herzog--and instead of a mediocre flick you get, yep. 5 stars!

Cheers,

Mario

OK I just watched the Chronicles of Narnia 3D. I have NO IDEA what this show's plot is about. I preferred the storyline of the first 2. Apart from the visual effects (which is expected), everything was mediocre.
