Took me a long time, but I finally got around to see American Beauty (1999). Devastating! "American Psycho" would have been a better title... :-)

If you don't mind the opinion of someone other than Rüssel, The Painted Veil is very good. The book is also very good, but a little different.

Thank you, 30 Roses!
By the way, when I was at the video rental store last night I heard a young couple talking in an "educated" way (and so that everyone could hear them) how delightful it was to first read the book and then bash the movie. :-) I always try to appreciate each medium on its own, without letting the one experience get in the way of the other.

It's not bad if you're in the mood to watch something like it but I didn't find it all that emotionally involving. Little risk to shed any tears. I think I did nod off at some point though, it seemed rather short.

Where would you rank against other Wes Anderson films?

Source Code (2011) A bit strange.

The Notebook (2004). I have yet to find a movie that would be a more effective tearjerker than this one. Maybe it's when you just gambled away a love that you has a heightened sense for these sentimental frequencies.

I loved The Notebook and yes, I cried too ! *LOL*

Safe House ( Denzel Washington , Ryan Reynolds. ) - very good movie. Lots of action , not for kids though. If you liked The Departed , then you may want to watch this.

K-PAX

edit: Hmmm, I tried to make that all-caps but it wouldn't work.
Lets see if it does it now that I've added text.

edit again: that's the ticket.

Savages. Terrific film by Oliver Stone. Don't go if you can't handle seeing violence, it's brutal.

MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY

Keaton and Allen together again. Keaton's comedic game is flawless. Relaxed and assured, the story has all of Allen's touchstones, cinematic send-ups, and invention, only better. A joy.

Cozy is a good way to describe the movie. There's an intimacy about it that's very appealing. Allen is always good with ensemble, and with Alan Alda and Angelica Huston in on it, the film has the atmosphere of a bunch of old friends getting together for a lark, but an inspired one, that somehow includes the viewer. The movie has no special conceits or innovation, just a rattling good story, terribly funny, and put together like a piece of great jazz.

One of my all time favorites.
Chaplin's "last will and testament." A poignant love letter to all artists

The Kennedys. The miniseries with Greg Kinnear as JFK and Katie Holmes as Jackie. Kinnear is terrific, a very underrated actor who bears a striking resemblance to JFK. Holmes puts in a little Boston accent at times and it is jarring. The actor who plays RFK is very good. I still wonder why this was banned, can't see anything that we all don't already know.

BREACH

A very tense thriller with no overt violence, based on the worst intelligence leak in U.S. history. Chris Cooper turns in a gripping performance as the suspected mole.

Casino Royal (new version). Best Bond that I've seen so far, it was like a proper movie.
