TODAYS SPECIAL (2009)

The gentle conflicts in this movie wont get anyones blood up, but its a wryly diverting fable set in an unfamiliar and interesting milieu. Samir, a talented sous-chef with haute cuisine ambitions, is saddled with rescuing the run-down family Indian restaurant in Queens, owned by his cantankerous father. With the help of a cab driver/itinerant Indian cook of genius, Samir recovers his roots, gets the girl, and a bit more.

THE SON OF NO ONE (2011)

A bit impressionistic and not always easy to follow, but an ultimately moving riff on moral ambiguity and redemption. If you’ve ever had someone step up and cover for you when you both know you’re in trouble, you’ll relate. Channing Tatum, Ray Liotta, Al Pacino, Katy Holmes, Juliette Binoche, Tracy Morgan.

THE MILL AND THE CROSS (2011)

A cinematic experiment in which Breugel’s medieval world (specifically his painting “Procession to Calvary” and its creation) is brought sluggishly and brutally to life. Imagine touring the Flemish countryside during the cruelty of the Spanish Inquisition with 20lb cement shoes amid glum medieval peasants who never speak. There are a few striking tableaux.
