Do you discuss sample swapping with friends and coworkers?

Hey guys:

I know there are a lot of basenoters that get funny looks and stuff from friends and coworkers because of their cologne obsession. How about the whole sample swap thing?
Do you ever discuss this with people outside the network and get weird looks like you have some kind of fetish or something?

Generally no . When I do speak of it with people outside of basenotes - they are usually genuinely interested but it seems anything over $50 puts them off ! *LOL* They are happy to get samples because they are freebies but they will never buy - especially niche ,IMHO.

Truthfully, I don't even feel comfortable talking about sample swapping on Basenotes.

I do it, but I don't talk about it.

I'm with scensitivity. I do have a perfumista friend who only does designer but has a 30+ bottle collection. I was so excited when I learned this! I made her up a bunch of samples, including my 22, which I admittedly hoard *gollum*. She totally didn't get it ( I think she actually found it funny) and now I'm out 2.5 mls of 22. Waahh!

Pweciousssss....

I mentioned it to a female postal employee once when I was shipping a package. She seemed fascinated at the idea.

Yeah, I really love it at the post office...

Clerk: Are you shipping anything liquid or flammable?
Me: Uh, well, some plastic containers of cologne?
Clerk: Is it sealed well and in bubble wrap?
Me: Of course! Each atomizer is sealed and taped and enclosed in taped saran wrap and the envelope has a bubble wrap liner. I do this all the time, so it should be just fine.

Indeed! I was at the post office and was sending some out and she looked at me with kind of a curious look. Then she said "well you smell good" It was a successful day

No, never do.

There's one guy I work with who's a bit of a collector and a woman who's a Basenotes lurker.

We offer up test sniffs or test wears from time to time.

The woman is an interesting test panel. She loved MKK, but Vintage Tabarome made her eyes water.
They both hated VT and hid the card with spray on it in the office of a guy they don't like.

just... wow.

i've never run into ANYONE who smelled VT and wasn't impressed.

The first rule of sample swapping, is you do NOT talk about... ah, just kidding.

I've so much as mentioned the hobby to people but it usually turns out badly because it starts with explaining the whole gender thing and then they give me strange looks when I mention "perfume" and an opinion that most mass-market stuff from their favorite designers is crap. Sample swapping, yeah, that seems strange to most people. Even just the fact that I'm constantly testing new ones instead of just using the full bottles seems "strange".

I consider a friend someone who I can speak to intimately about anything.

Sticking your nose onto a card during the opening of VT is pretty intense. Black pepper maybe?

But then, the opening of MKK smells like barnyard to me. Go figure.
