Midnight Poison.

I am a little confused about this fragrance. I see most reviews recommend this fragrance as more masculine than not and I like Oriental fragrances, but would like some descriptions of the scent from those here who tried it. Perhaps a comparison with another fragrance? Anyway, I would appreciate some input please?

Hmm, I'm terrible at describing fragrances, but I'll give it a go.
It is a Poison you are requiring info about ... and God knows,
that I'm a sucker for Poisons!

Midnight Poison is a dark rose scent, just look at the add above,
perfectly named, as it truely is a scent of the night; would be
perfect for, say, a vampire!
It's dark, as stated, mysterious, dominating and beautiful.
The opening may be somewhat feminine, but after some 20 minutes,
it turnes quite male friendly.
I got our very own Bossa Nova to buy this fragrance, now it's one of
his faves (correct me if I'm wrong, love), and his wifes too ... on him
that is.

Midnight is very easily found everywhere, don't be affraid of trying out
a spray or two, but not more, it's an EdP, and as such, it's grotesquely
strong - borderline Esprit de Parfum!

All hail the House of Dior,
and all hail the Poisons..!

Somebody, who can describe the scent better than me, please respond!

I am only familiar with the original Poison, Hypnotic Poison, and Tendre Poison.

But Midnight Poison sounds interesting from your description. I'll have to check it out soon.

Please do ... you'll be surpriced!

To me it reminded me of a mixure between Dali's Laguna and Angel. Can't really describe it any better. Take the airy ,wathery part of Laguna and add some of the fruity, patchouliness of Angel(particularly the topnotes of Angel). That's at least how it came out on my skin.

Are you sure it wasn't the Elixir you tryed, Inees?!
The Elixir is not as male friendly as the regular EdP,
since it's spiced up with caramel - a bit Angle'ish..!

Not sure...But on me Angel isn't all THAT sweet. At least not until the drydown. All in all it does remind me more of Laguna, though...with a touch of # 88 perhaps. Probably the rose and bergamot that gives me that asociation.
I don't know if that helps or not ,but i get something like an Angel smell in MP but it's not as sweet as Angel...is a dry one Angel smell..and it's not Laguna ...it's like Eau de Lalique! Confusing,eh

Midnight Poison has grown on me- it was not my fave Poison but there is a definite allure to it and very wearable by a man .
I love what Le Grand Duc 'd described.
My fav poison (at the moment) is Hypnotic Poison. But I found myself spritz MP now and then, happy and contented just to inhale the glorious, cool and silky smell.
I don't get the comparisons to Angel except for the fact that it's got a hefty dose of patchouli in it (although Olivier Cresp was one of the noses that created it so maybe there's more to this assertation than I initially thought....I'll have to re-sniff.) Anyway, it's been a while but it struck me as a nice but not-so-interesting or earth-shattering dark rose and patchouli scent, and there are much better choices if that's what you're looking for (specifically because the rose in this just isn't persistent enough for me.) And there are better Poisons. As far as I'm concerned, the most seductive thing about Midnight Poison is the bottle.
I get the relation to Angel, too, it is the patchouli I think. It is similar to Nirmala in that way as well, only more floral, but it's is a dark floral and certainly more unisex than the others in the poison line. I think it's worth testing out at least.

A couple of weeks a go, on the recommendation of Le Duc, my better half and I set off for Ulta to test Midnight Poison. She skin-tested it first, and though she was pleased with the rose opening, within 3 or 4 minutes she declared the fragrance to be "too dark, too masculine, too brooding."

So, I tested it next. I did indeed find the opening to be heavy with rose, but I happen to like that, and don't necessarily find that to be an exclusively feminine trait in a fragrance. Within a couple of minutes I could smell mandarin and bergamot. We left the store to shop elsewhere, while I sniffed my forearm all the while. Soon the amber, patchouli and vanilla became more apparent. At this stage, Midnight Poison reminded me a little bit of the drydown of Zino Davidoff. Since Zino is one of my favorite masculines, this was a boon for me to find an edp that was even vaguely similar.

Later that day, I purchased Midnight Poison and have been wearing it most of these warm summer nights ever since. While the fragrance has monster sillage in the opening, it is not so extreme after about 20 minutes. After an hour, I find the 2 sprays I use become moderate in projection. The longevity is excellent on my skin.

I can't help but wonder if Dior should have marketed this as "Poison pour Homme" or (tongue in cheek) "Poison Him."

See, that's how it is done, Bossa ... beautiful!

Well, N_Tesla, are you gonna sample this already?!

Le Grand Duc; OK, you talked me into it so much that I bought one ounce of the extrait (pure parfum). I will give you my opinion of this extreme blind buy when it arrives. I figured if I am going to blind buy, it might as well be in style. Thanks to all who responded to my plea for information. The denizens of Basenotes are a wonderful bunch indeed.

Maybe midnight poison is considered more masculine than feminine because of the dark, dry effect. On my skin, this one starts with a sweet patchouli note and then mellows to a dark rose base with woody notes. What I don`t like in it is that on my skin it has a sheer longevity and sillage. Midnight poison to me seems linked with gucci by gucci, which is fruitier than MP, Elle, that has a great peppery note, and Delicious Night by Donna Karan, which has a fruity boozy note. All of they has the same structure, the camphoraceous patchouli made fruitier and with a controlled earthiness, more a suggestion of dark and dry or maybe a contradictory dark/dry vibe made soft/silk.
I prefer Midnight Poison Elixir, that is more sensual than MP. Elixir has a delicious vanilla-ananas vibe that matches well with the patchouly and rose accord of the original MP. MP Elixir is somehow a cousin of Shiseido Zen.
If you want to explore this fruity-patchouli thing in a niche fragrance, I`d recommend Mon Parfum by M. Micallef. It has a great creamy ananas opening that mellows to a soft musk with some patchouli undertones.

Im a fan of Hypnotic Poison and have yet to try Midnight. Le Duc makes it sound wonderful. I'll have to sample this bad girl!

I agree with everything you wrote...
I rather like Midnight P and think every woman should at least try it!

I am not a fan of "the Poison" lineup, but Midnight Poison was my favorite and the one I purchased. Michael Edwards classifies it as a "classic woody oriental'. Sephora considers it a "floral oriental", which is strange because they supposedly use Michael Edwards classification system. Pg 85 of Fragrances of the World 2009 has it listed as a woody oriental and that was my experience with the scent. It's why I liked it so much.

I wonder if the current Midnight Poison hasn't been reformulated. The CD website lists the perfumer as François Demachy. However, the review of the fragrance on NST dated 17 August 2007 states, and I quote: "This year’s entry was created by perfumers Jacques Cavallier and Olivier Cresp, and features notes of mandarin orange, bergamot, black rose, patchouli, amber and French vanilla." Methinks it has changed.

Sorry darling, but I speak the truth. Tuberose is a big note in Poison. Tuberose does not love me.

My bottle of Midnight Poison Pure Parfum has arrived a day early. I must admit that I placed it on my desk to admire the bottle design for some time before removing the cap to sample the juice. This blind buy was rather less than ordinary in that it is the first time I did a blind buy on extrait. I am, however, pleased to advise that all apprehension faded quickly once the spray hit my skin. This was a good experience and I thank all who replied to this thread to give assistance in understanding the fragrance. Of course, the moment of truth came with the first sniff.

Today was my first full day of wearing Midnight Poison extrait and it is powerful stuff! I put on one light spray and it has lasted all day and still is very present. The extrait seems a bit smoother than some of the EDP reviews report. I am not much of a Dior man, but this is a keeper.

Honey, you were doing so fine, but then you messed it up,
but saying something stupid like that! *tsk tsk tsk*
You are clearly not worthy of possessing such a delightfull
Dior product, and need to send it along to me.
I will give you my shipping info via PM ... such a pity!

Nice try Duc!

Grats on your blind buy success Tesla!
I was going to add my opinion but it's all been said and the deed is done.

I also wanted to agree with Mimi. This one grew on me too - I have about 2ml left of my 5ml mini and am considering a small bottle purchase. Considering I hated this at first sniff (bug spray mania) this is quite a feat. It is one of only two Poison's that is worth any note. *duc's and runs* (pun intended)

Weeeee!

Le Grand Duc; Other Poison? This is the first of the Poison line for me, he said in confusion.

You're making the confusion yourself, because,
it was Kal I quoted and asked! LOL!

Hypnotic Poison of course! This is a firm staple in my wardrobe and have bought 2 100ml bottles. I love it but would never have tried it at all if I hadn't found a mini of it. The Poison name has turned me off for years.

From memory Poison was released in 1985.
I remember it's release - my friends mother used to bath in it and I haaaaated it. It made me choke and gag.
There is still something about it I can't stand but there's nothing in the note breakdown to indicate why I dislike it so it's possible it's association. That means I don't like Tendre either since that shares the most in common with the original. Pure I just find boring. Blank floral. *shrug*

Hypnotic Poison is something else though and Midnight grew on me. MP is a Patchouli bomb to my nose, like a feminine Givenchy Gentleman - funky!

I don`t know if anyone is interested, but I found Midnight Poison Extrait for a bargain price. At this moment, ReiRien is offering the 30ml spray tester, with cap, but unboxed, for 50 dollars.
I already ordered mine \\o/

Hey Guys! Some help over here... ;-)

I just smelled midnight poison (on paper - maybe I should have sprayed on my skin instead, but there wasn't enough space left...) and everytime I smell it, I keep coming to the conclusion that it's so close to Pure Malt except without too much of the fruity note. (I guess in some ways this one is more mature than PM as well.) Is it just me or does somebody else get this?

Signed, sealed, delivered,

Olfactorynewbie (indeed)

Strangely or not, most of the women I talked too perceived this one as too strong and most men qualified this as rather masculine
post #42 of 42
My opinion on this has changed, I see - it must have grown on me, too. I honestly don't recall feeling as indifferent to it as I did a year ago, but Midnight Poison is now my favorite of the Poisons, without a doubt. I still don't get much rose from it (if any - that probably accounts for my initial disappointment) but there's something about this mentholated-ambery-patchouli blend that is just so smoldery and compelling. I can see how many would find it unisex, but I wouldn't call it overtly masculine (and my husband actually called it "womanly", but I think he meant that as compared to other perfumes he finds "girly". Either way, I won't have to worry about him depleting my bottle any time soon, lol.)
