building my first organ, what i need more?

Hi,

i am building my first perfume organ and i am a little bit confused about what to buy and what not to buy.

At the moment i have these materials:

Osmanthus Abs.
Tuberose Abs.
Fir Abs.
Tonka Bean Abs.
Opopanax
Labdanum
Haiti Vetiver
Styrax
Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss)
Patchouly
Clove Bud
Tarragon
Ginger
Cedarwood Atlas
Cedarwood Virginia
Coriander
Bergamote FCF
Bergamote
Sandalwood Mysore
Lime FCF
Ambroxan
Sandalwood Australia


I m very happy with these EO´s but i know isn´t enough to start.

Any recommendations?

Also looking for good supplier in Europe, but not so expensive.


Any helps?

Think of top notes (citrus, mint, light woods, lavender, herbs etc) middle notes (florals, woods, herbs, spices) and base notes (woods, spices and balsams) and make sure you have a variety of each.
The obvious things missing from your list are the common florals (rose, jasmine, neroli, geranium).
You need some rose urgently! I couldn't live without lots of lemon oil.
The best way to get started, in my opinion, is to try and make some classic types of fragrance. Make a chypre (bergamot, oakmoss, labdanum, pathchouli for the skeleton chypre, then fill out the heart with florals, or make an oriental (anything over a base of vanilla, sandalwood etc) or make a woody (citrus top over woods) or make a vetiver etc.

I have built my pallette around what I have wished to work with on a particular frag - recently been exploring tobacco.

Ummm, sounds interesting.
I will explore this palette.

You live in UK. So, where do you buy small quantities in good prices?

Actually i am testing also a fragrance with tobacco and apple, for my colection of candles. :-) I love tobacco.


Do you have any of your parfums available to samples or selling?

Vanilla and/or Benzoin. Lots of florals as HD says above, narcissus is a favourite of mine, and you've got to get a whole load of rose too. Orris is widely used but expensive. Violet is good.
Petitgrain. Hay or Flouve are amazing. White Birch also known as Birch Tar in very, very small amounts. Oakmoss is a must.

Sites I've used in the UK are:

Essentially Oils

I usually shop around for the best deals. I have a list of around 20 - 30 places. The ones I've said here are the ones I've used most and the more you buy the cheaper it gets. There are quite a few large scale wholesalers around too but they usually won't do less than 1kg.

I will try to get some of EO´s you told me.

recently i see that tarragon broke all my mixes...
any sustitute?

I can't seem to find the link now but recently someone posted a website where you can buy a set of base notes, like an organ of sorts, for beginner perfumers or I suppose scentheads who want to be able to identify individual notes.

also, pretend like you're buying a whole set, then go look up what would be the full set versus the more basic (ie essential) ones.

it could be Perfumer´s Apprentice? They sell beginners kits.
i will try to buy by myself, separate. i just want to know what is the more common EO, Absolutes, and Aromachemicals used in modern perfumery.

As you make different kinds of perfumes, you will gradually add things to your organ. If you have what are (for you) the basics, I see no need to go out and try to obtain a "standard" set of EOs and aromachemicals. The challenge is to find good suppliers, look through their offerings, and try small amounts of things that sound interesting. Some will immediately prove useful, and you can then buy these in larger amounts. This has been my approach, and over the years that I've been experimenting, I've acquired quite an extensive organ. However, it evolved gradually rather than happening all at once, and will never stop evolving.

I was trying to order in www.recincke-fichtner.de, but they don´t have any online shop, just a list and cas number.

how did you order to them?

If you want to build up faster and don't need the costs. Consider swapping smaller amounts like 1ml maybe with another beginner. There are many of us out there all trying to build up our choices too. There is a lot of that sort of activity with other basenoters, especially on the perfume side. That sort of fellow mankind trust and exchange makes life such fun.

It's been a while that I ordered, but they did sell small quantities (well about 1 oz =30 ml) and their minimum order was 100 euro.

Some samples on their way to help you get started. The seaweed tincture isn't really ready yet so I've left bits in to carry on infusing. It gives an idea anyway.
