** THIS SATURDAY! ** Another San Francisco meet-up, September 25th!!!

Inspired by the rather epic Boston meet-up and conversations with fellow local BNers, I'd like to
propose a Basenotes San Francisco Shopping Day.

I don't think we'll be able to pull off a massive 3-day sleepover like they did in Boston, but we sure know how to spend a day shopping!

[edit] We'll have it Saturday, September 25th.

Let's sniff, go nuts, hopefully get some nice samples, and throw some money around!
I vote yes for another Saturday roam through the fragrance counters; after 1 p.m. would be best for me.
(All for this, and the 25th is the better of the two dates for me, as I've already said in the Female Forum thread...) Cheers!
I would like to attend this one too. Saturday is workable for me, Sunday is not.
I should be in San Francisco on the 25! (as posted in female forum.) Is this going to happen...?

I'll make it happen. Let's consider the 25th to be the official day, since that works best for so many people answering.

I'll PM everyone closer to time, but we generally meet around 12:00-1:00, shop until 7:00-ish and then have dinner somewhere.
Thanks rogalal, looking forward to it! Please PM (or post here) sooner if you need to enlist our help.

Count me in! For planning purposes, would you please pin down the "around 12-1" meet-up location as soon as possible??

I'll have to meet with the folks at the stores before I can be sure about anything, but be sure it'll be within a block of Union Square, no matter what.

Anyone else out there???

Somehow I managed to miss the original post. Fortunately, Sept 25 is OK with me.

In anticipation of the late-September San Francisco sniffing expedition, I thought it would be useful to list the main lines offered at each of the high-end department stores we’re likely to visit. Also in the area (and possibly on our itinerary) are numerous designer and fragrance boutiques. I won’t list them all, but here’s a tip: the Diptyque shop on Maiden Lane still has a few bottles of some of their recently-discontinued scents, if you ask for them.

Only two weeks to go!!!

I've officially gotten promises of sample bags from Saks and Jo Malone, and I'll be making the rounds this weekend to try to make everything more official.

At this point, there aren't that many of us - I count about 7 people including myself.

Last year we had 15! Where is everybody???

If you're coming, I'll PM you details soon. Please help me keep this thread and the one on the ladies board on the front page - we need more people and the threads keep getting lost...

I'm in. I would prefer a meeting time closer to 12:30 or 1:00. Also, I have an issue with Barneys about their locking out union employees, so I may not join you for that leg of the journey. If anybody else is sensitive to labor issues, maybe we could keep each other company while the others go inside.

I read your post about that before. I don't know all the details, but the protests were over when I went there last weekend (ironically on Labor Day...).

I was figuring it would be a good idea to plan to do them last, so that it would be easy to avoid if there's any drama.

I can't find anything about the protests online - even the SEIU website and blog doesn't have any mentiontion of it, let alone any news of a resolution. Are the picketers still out there?
I saw them again after I first posted about it in the SF Bay Area Basenoters Group. I talked to the guy with the bullhorn, and he said they have been locked out by management, who have hired non-union 'replacement workers' (or 'scabs,' as the union people call them). I think they do not have enough workers to picket during all the store hours. Both times I have seen them have been mid-to-late weekday afternoons, just as they were disbanding. Almost all the people in the line were latinos, of course. The hot-dog vendor across the street said they had been picketing for a while.

I agree the SEIU Local 87 website was unhelpful, but when I spoke to the picket captain, he said they were from that local. I will try to follow up on the issue, and will report back when I know more. Thanks for being concerned enough to leave Barneys for last... I'm sure it will mean a lot to the displaced workers if we do not patronize Barneys.

I talked to Christina today. Apparently, the issue is indeed ongoing, though there are only picketers 3 days a week. The official Barneys line is that this is all the decision of their maintenance company, which is pretty typical corporate hand-washing (you know, keep the blood on the outsourced maintenance company's hands and not their own).

For the sake of planning, I think I'll leave them on the itinerary (they're looking forward to seeing us and are putting together some goodie bags - they do love their Basenoters, if not necessarily their janitors). Though I very much respect it if anyone wants to bow out.

So I think it's time to give the details:

I made the rounds today and talked to all the stores, so I can make it official:

We'll meet at 1:00 at Diptyque - they have the new Eau Duelle and Vetyverio - if you haven't sniffed it yet, Duelle is fabulous - a totally new spicy take on vanilla with tea.

We'll pop through Hermes (who are hoping to have samples of the new Eau Claire de Marveilles by then) on our way to Neiman Marcus, where the Jo Malone boutique will have some fun gifts for us. The Creed rep will be on hand to help us out (spoiler alert: They'll be getting in a few bottles of Windsor!). Downstairs, the Fougere Royale re-issue will hopefully be in stock by then (it turns out that it IS exclusive to this one specific store, and they're only getting a limited number of bottles, so this is perfect timing). And that's not to mention the Guerlain boutique with all the exclusives (a whole ton of new ones should be in by then, including the new mens duo and the Shalimar Eau Vanille!)

We'll probably grab some drinks and snacks at the Neiman Marcus cafe (home of the legendary Neiman Marcus cookies!!!) on our way down the street to new store Harputs, who have an interesting selection of niche scents, including the Six Scents and Etat Libre d'Orange. That'll be quick, and then we'll jump across the street to the legendary Parfumerie Jacqueline (probably best know as the only store in the world with Parfums Regence, though as of today, he was down to a few bottles only...).

Then we'll go up a couple blocks to Saks Fifth Avenue, who have generously offered us some nice samples, as well as some extra fun little gift bags from Bond No 9. We'll sniff our way through the Bonds and the Kilians and the rest of their exclusive selection.

At that point, for our last stop, we'll make our way over to Barneys. As we've been discussing above, they're having some labor drama, so some of us may choose to skip this last stop, especially if there are picketers out there. But they're working on gift bags for us, and have some fun new items, including their exclusive new L'Artisan Coure de Vetiver Sacre and hopefully a new Le Labo and possibly the new Lutens.

When all is done, we'll decide if some of us would like to sit down for dinner somewhere.

For those joining us from out of town, there are many more interesting places worth checking out, so the truly hardcore may want to make an evening run through Space NK, Bloomingdales, or Sephora. I'm willing to host 'til I drop - we'll see what happens...

More people have to come out of the woodwork for this perfume counter crawl! You don't have to buy anything, you know. If you don't trust your will power, just leave all your plastic at home...

But please come out and join the fun!

I want to find a new home for a few bottles, and if anyone who's going to be at the 25 September 2010 meet-up wants one, I'll be happy to pass it on. This is a giveaway, not a sale or a swap, and I don't want to pack and ship anything, so it's only for people attending the San Francisco meet-up. Please PM me if you would enjoy receiving one of these when we gather on Saturday:
  • Creed - Erolfa 1.0 oz, 85%
  • Etro - Palais Jamais 100 ml, 90%
  • Chanel - Egoiste 4 ml miniature splash, 90%
  • Ineke - Chemical Bonding 75 ml, 90%

If more than one person wants the same thing, I'll choose at random. (I'm not doing first come, first serve, because I'd prefer for everyone to think this over and not claim things they don't actually want!)
So we're meeting at Diptyque on Maiden Lane at 1 p. m. Is that right?
Correct.

Since nobody has said anything, I'll say I want them? For reviewing on Youtube then I can pass them on except anything I like . Unless someone else has claimed them that is.

All right, sounds good. I'll still entertain more specific requests from anyone who wants to make one, but you'll get anything that isn't otherwise claimed. (You can identify a "first choice" if you'd like...)

I can't believe we're this close.

Thanks to Paul for the generous offer. I'll take that Erolfa if no one else speaks up.

Last year, some folks generously offered to make little samples if anyone wanted to try anything from their wardrobes, so I'll officially extend Paul's generous spirit (albeit in a much smaller way) and say that if anyone at the meet-up wants a sample of anything in my wardrobe, just let me know and I'll bring it!

Sorry we'll miss you Remixx...
rogalal, what a fun idea!

I'll happily make samples from my wardrobe for anyone attending, too, but I have to know what you'd like by 7 PM PST on Thursday. I'll only be able to decant that evening.

Noooooooooo! Swooped on! haha, not a problem. My preference was Erolfa, but Egoiste will be fine in it's stead For that I'm going to peer at your wardrobe and ask for decants mwahahahah!
I'm so jealous! It sounds like a fabulous scehedule with lots of new stuff to sniff, but the BEST part is meeting up with fellow BNers!

Have a great time everyone!

Dang! I'm seriously missing out here...lolz. My SO actually suggested a San Francisco leg as part of our honeymoon late next year. Perhaps then? Anyway have a great fragrance outing you guys! Do report back!

... and noted! I'll bring along a few empty (unused) glass atomizers (approx 8-10 ml each), so if anyone misses out on their first choice they can probably still negotiate a reasonably generous decant.

Looks like we're due for a sunny, clear, and pleasantly warm day on Saturday.

Excited!
(Update: No one has spoken for Palais Jamais. There's no harm in PM'ing me if you were hoping for one of the others, since Erolfa and Chemical Bonding are large and potentially splittable. Egoiste is just a mini, so consider it taken!)

Edit: let's say the lion's share of Palais Jamais goes to 959lover, per his request above.
And really like I said, I only really want them for reviewing purposes.

Oh, Allen, I talked to Sean (he is Superped2 on youtube) and he cannot make it. I have not spoken with Holland yet (Hollandaze or imprezzy).

Holland PMed me - he's busy that day...

I also forgot to say in my e-mail: If you have some, bring along empty little vials or sprayers so we can trade samples of the stuff we buy - that can be fun, too, if people are into it.

Get lots of pics too , that would be nice

Hi guys, I'll be in SF tommorrow, I know im new here but I'd love to meet up with you guys! I'm not sure if I can do the whole tour as I have previous engagements but I'll definently try to meet up with the gang, if only to say hi.

Do it!

I hope you guys have a phenomenal time. Bring the coffee beans. Very jealous. Sniff lots, buy lots but most importantly of all bring me a present.(Im just joking around) Have fun.
