I was wondering how much animal ingredients are still used in perfumery? Civet, real deer musk and castoreum etc - are they still totally legal and if so have they been largely replaced by synthetics or are they still around in our perfumes? If so who uses them? Anyone know?

Well the musk deer is an endangered species so banned. Castoreum and civet is synthetic these days too. The last civet farm was in Etheopia(sp), and now gone. Because of rules and regulations etc animal welfare companies would not risk having PETA stalking them.

Amouage kept insisting for ages they used only natural ingredients, but as their range included musk they were talking rubbish and admitted no real musk.

Some perfumers use real ambergris but this is so rare and expensive.

Note that ambergris is a "cruelty free" product, harvested after it has already been excreted by the sperm whale. But due to the scarcity of the natural product, synthetic substitutes are commonly used.
