A masculine chocolate?

Thread Starter
Most of the 'chocolate' scents i've looked at are femme, or too sweet. Are there any that are masculine, with darker basenotes? (other than the Muglar line)
Something with notes of Cocoa, chocolate, coffee, butterscotch, vanilla, rum, dark berries, etc, with something more exotic, and a base to ground it along the lines of leather, wood, patchouli, tobacco, etc

Have you tried L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme Extreme? It's chocolatey, intense, and not too femme, in my opinion.

Rochas Man

A*Men. But honestly chocolate is stinky, I recommend cocoa, maybe that's what you mean. In that case:

Thank you everyone! I thought A men was the one but it was too sweet and had a powdery sweet geriatric drydown on my skin that was just too much. It smells good, just not on me. The Guerlain L'Instant Extreme sounds amazing, I'm ordering some now.

Aside from the the ones mentioned above:

A*men Pure Malt by Thierry Mugler
Borneo 1834 by Serge Lutens
Five O'clock au Gingembre by Serge Lutens

L'Instant de Guerlain PH Extreme is the best IMO. But some cheapies well worth checking out are Animale Animale and Antonio Banderas Spirit.

It's cocoa as opposed to chocolate. A minor distinction perhaps, but worth pointing out. It is also more subtle overall than A*Men.

Borneo 1834 also has a nice toned down A*Men vibe to it. Not as sweet and loud, but same idea.

Some good suggestions already...i'll add

Lacoste's Elegance (choco base)
O Boticario's Egeo Dolce (chocolate mid-base)
and the base of Tom Ford for Men extreme, the combo of vanilla and black truffle smells chocolatey and with the rum , it makes up for a great bonbon liqueur.
also some chocolate smell-a-likes that don't really have chocolate (like TFfME) are Jacomo for Men and TF's Tobacco Vanille.

cheers

VERY IRRESISTIBLE by Givenchy ... very much chocolatish but too linear.

This. It's not as cloying as A*Men, and not as stuffy as Rochas Man can be. It takes the best qualities of each and drops the negatives.

Play Intense is a great gourmand that is perfectly balanced. Out of my 35 or so bottles and the 100+ samples she's smelled, it's my girlfriends favorite on a most primal level (the tear your clothes off kind. She also includes some more complex/refined scents in her favorites on me such as Oxford and Cambridge and Lyric Man.)

Dior Homme Intense and Givenchy Play Intense,
but by all means, I mean the Play INTENSE!
Duc, do you actually prefer the Play Intense? If so, why? (I've not tried Dior Homme Intense yet)
Well, if one is going for a chocolatey note, the Intense rocks.
The normal Play is just another male fragrance, whereas the Intense
version is bold and spicy! I do wish, being an EdT Intensé and all, that
it actually were intense, I find it quite light, and tend to spray alot
when applying!
I think Lacoste Elegance deserves a mention. I think Lacoste and Rochas Man are about all you could want in a chocolate rotation.
Even the regular, not just the extreme version, of L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme has some chocolate notes to it- however, slight hints of chocolate mixed with notes reminiscent of fudge, mocha, licorice and winter spices (at least, this is how I perceive this frag)
Dior Homme Intense screams masculine chocolate to me, very gourmandish.
Le Grand Duc, can you give a full description of Givenchy Play Intense please?
I must add that I own and love Play Intense. I'll leave it to Duc to describe it. Well, I'll just say that it's chocolatey, has a cappucino like coffee note, has a nice labdanum in the base and a good bit of patchouli, too. It's rich but never too sweet and maintains a sort of airy diffusiveness that I didn't find to be true for A*Men, and it avoids the stuffy cedar accord of Rochas Man (I may be sensitive to a specific chemical, as I've noticed this cedar note jump out before in other scents that feature it, like Fleur du Male). It really does a good job of creating an aura around you - that kind of scent aura where it is very hard to pinpoint or localize where the scent is coming from. Longevity on me is 12+ hours and sillage is moderate to very good.

Well, I guess I said more than I originally intended.

Chocolate ...
Me gusta Chocolate !!

If you like Chocolate with Butterscotch-rum / Vanila-Tobacco notes
You can get this by layerings,

Bozzy Notes : A Men Pure Malt , Tabac Original EDT ,
Leather Notes : Tom Ford Men Extreme , Tom Ford Tuscan Leather , Christian Dior Homme Intense EDP ,
Leather Musk - Spices : Muscs Koublai Khan , Musc Ravageur , Dzing! , Eau d Hermes , Havana Vanille ,
Vanilla Tobaco : Fumerie Turque , Havana Vanille ,
Chocolate , Coffee : A Men , A Men Pure Coffee , ......
Pure Chocolate : CSP Amour du Cacao

Posible funny layerings : )

Havana Vanille have a Vanilla Rum notes maybe You like this ,
Tabac Original is very complex but not easy works , in me works beutifull and is my favorite for layerings
Tom Ford Men Extreme have masculine Leather-woody notes .

I like :

Tabac Original
Amour du Cacao
Musc Ravageur

Vetiver Oriental has a cocoa note, a very dry one. And Lonestar Memories does also, to my nose, mixed in amongst the other stuff that some people smell as barbecue and brimstone, burning asphalt, root beer, etc.

I hope you enjoy it, Desmond. It doesn't evolve all that much but it's not completely linear, either.

I actually prefer the original Play in a lot of cases as it's more versatile and more complex (in the sense that it evolves quite a bit throughout its lifespan), but Play Intense is definitely more distinctive, suited for the upcoming cold weather, and for me, a real comfort scent. I love them both, and really do feel that they make a good duo, having enough similarities that if you like one you'll likely enjoy the other, but being different enough that each excels during a particular season or occasion.

While neither of them are groundbreaking, they both are exceptionally balanced - especially in regards to their diffusion and their very smooth textures - and as a result I feel stand above a great majority of modern releases.

As some have mentioned... Rochas Man

Imma fool when it comes to describing scents, and ditect different notes,
all I can say is, that it surpriced me. I thought I was gonna sniff yet a plain,
boring male frag, but discovered a milder version of A*men, which screams
sexy gourmand ... it's quite lovely, but borderline feminine, so not for all..!
i haven't smelled all of the above ones listed, but I do feel that some of them pretty clearly miss the chocolate mark. I have no idea what some of the above rec's are getting at.

Of those I've smelled, I'll +1 only to L'Instant, and Play Intense. Dior Homme, Angel and Rochas I feel are either too sweet, not "manly" enough, or not all that chocolaty, but at least they're closer to the mark then some of the others.

Interesting to see someone that knows Egeo Dolce outside Brazil. It was a huge seller here. To me this one is like a variation of Amen but more focused on the sweet side of Amen instead of the woodier, patchouly side. I have already owned a bottle of this one and gave it to my brother in law. On him, it had a candy chocolate smell, like chocolates with praline...
It's a little bit hard to find now, but Vanille Mohka from Comptoir Sud Pacific is basically a roasted coffee aroma with a dark chocolate cookie aura over a creamy vanilla base...
On me, dior homme intense is more like white chocolate than dark chocolate I think...
You also have chocolate greedy from montale, that starts like a sweet and dark chocolate with orange notes, but end in a vanilla base...
It's quite interesting that anyone cited Bvlgari Blv Notte. On me this one is an affordable dry chocolate scent. It opens in a fresh spicy ginger of the original Blv, but less soapy I think, and then it develops to a dry woody base with dark chocolate and some boozy notes.
And if you want your dark chocolate paired with some roses, you can try CiocoRosissimo from Hilde Soliane. It's unique chocolate fragrance, never smelled anything like this one before.

I've been to Sao Paulo a few times and have always liked OB! it's very under-represented here on Bnotes and there are many missing scents still on the directory (discontinued and not)...you might want to check out a list i made on one of my old posts at the missing scents forum...

DHI is greeaat!

only thing is that this dark chocolate has lots more sugar compared to a real 70% bitter bar, which has little sugar in comparison!

To me, Animale Animale is the more masculine of either A*Men of Rochas Man (but don't get confused with plain old Animale, which is in a very similar bottle, but is like a suped-up version of Eternity).

A wealth of information, thank you all for suggestions.
I really liked play intense, but i didn't read it's make up and I couldn't put my finger on the note that was so attractive. This one will def be in my wardrobe.
From your recommendations, I've ordered : L'Instant PH Extreme & Tom Ford for Men extreme. Chocolate greedy & borneo 1834 will be next.
I smell like oatmeal hippy soap, cigarettes & coffee before I ever put anything on, so I think these will go great with my skin.
Thank you all again, I love this forum

"Hippy soap?" Would that be patchouli?

Yes, Borneo 1834 is the civilized, refined and perfected A*Men. Much MUCH better.

Edit: Try Frapin 1270 too.

I will agree with L'Instant Pour Homme Extreme and give another vote to Montale Chocolate Greedy as well. Chocolate Greedy is what you wear if you want real, identifiable chocolate throughout the scents development. I dont find Chocolate Greedy's top notes too masculine but they dont last long.

Cannabis Santal by Fresh struck me as another more civilized version of A*Men. The Patch note in the base is very 'chocolatey'.
Montale Chocolate Greedy smells like Chocolate Milk Powder, if that's what you'd fancy. Comptoir Sud Pacific has a few Cocaos I think. I quite like Amour de Cacao.
Sephora sells a 30ml EdP of Fresh Cannabis Santal for $30. Not a steal, price-wise, but a nice size bottle and an interesting scent.
