Dark and Mysterious fragrance

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a dark, sexy, and mysterious fragrance maybe with a little tobacco. I tend to go for citrus fragrances but want something darker. The cologne i wear the most would probably be CREED MI. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Chergui by Serge Lutens
Ungaro III
Furmerie Turque by Serge Lutens

I second Chergui and Black Aoud recommendations, and I also suggest:

Black Orchid by Tom Ford
Encre Noire
Narciso Rodriguez for him

Sorry dear neighor, I'm out of sync with you on NR for him being Dark! The bottle is tinted with solid gray on the inside, but that's all that's dark about it. The scent has ample sunlight and water freshness. It's like a spring-time river.

Darkness is perfectly locked in Lorezo Villoresi's bottles of Patchouli, Vetiver and Insenso (sp?). It's pitch-dark in there and you'll need to carry a torch.

I probably should've mentioned I'm talking about the Musc collection EdP. The regular version sucks.

It's a totally hot mess, but a lotta people love it: Salvador Dali for men (the original). It's pretty dark. And definitely mysterious.
Ungaro III most decidedly...DARK. I think Trussardi Uomo kinda fits the bill. And maybe Bulgari Black. Chanel Antaeus...a shophisticated take on the dark and mysterious theme. In a tux.
Amouage Memoir Man has a brooding Heathcliff-ian vibe and there's some tobacco in amongst the frankincense.

Idole by Lubin could also qualify in a "Heart of Darkness" kinda way - pick your jungle and your river, maybe the Mekong, the Congo.

Knize ten

Dark, mysterious would be

Ungaro III
Fahrenheit Absolute
Zino by Zino Davidoff (also add erotic)
I don´t know - the only thing I found dark about Ungaro III is its bottle...

I´d rather recommend Derrick Black or Van Cleef Arpels pour Homme
post #12 of 45
Dark & Mysterious.....Definitely Black Aoud but there ain't no tobacco in it.

You could also perhaps look at Domenico Caraceni 1913.
Chanel Antaeus
Burberry London for Men
Santos de Cartier
Patou pour Homme
Jules
Or Black
Yatagan
Sycomore
Azzaro pour Homme
Zino Davidoff
Ungaro 1
Halston Z-14
Jubilation XXV
Bois d’Orage
Santos Concentree

I'll second Fahrenheit Absolute,
and throw in Midnight Poison..!

My Dark and Mysterious picks:

YSL M7
Bulgari Soir
Tous in Heaven
It's not especially dark *to my nose* but many here do find it very dark indeed and it has a very upfront and center tobacco note:
Domenico Caraceni 1913.

A few that are easier to find that are dark in some manner and have tobacco notes:
Gucci by Gucci PH (in the grey bottle)
Romance Silver by Ralph Lauren

Chergui - Serge Lutens
M7 - YSL
IMO

Very cool - you get that vibe, too! What great perfumery. I get the distinct impression of being in a dark tropical forest at night.

+1s to Chergui & Fumerie Turque. The FT would be more than "maybe a little tobacco" though.

+1 to the dark and mysterious Dior Midnight Poison

JHAG Midnight Oud is oudy and woody and beautiful, don't recall if there's a tobacco hint there but it's also mysterious.

And I don't find Bulgari Black mysterious and dark, just beautiful and quirky. I layer it often with Bandit, and THAT combo IS mysterious and dark and hints of tobacco and leather and new tires... oh my!

If you like the smoky leathery scents (though you might get accused of frying bacon before you applied this scent) Kolnisch Juchten is unusual and smoky. It's more forward than mysterious, but also dark in a Russian leather dark smoky way, with hints of rose in there as well. Dang, I think I just talked myself into wearing it today!

(and now I'm terribly curious about Idole by Lubin. Sigh.)

Dark and Mysterious:

Cuba by Czech & Speake - a little bay rhum spice, rum, tobacco and limes. It is mysterious alright, and kind of dark.

Kolnisch Jucheten - dark and leathery.

Nariz by Dorissimo - dark, foresty and mysterious.

Givenchy Gentleman - coffee, patchouli, etc.

Fille En Aiguilles, Serge Lutens - kind of dark forest woods.

Black Afghano, Nasomatto (if you can still find a bottle) - dark, leathery with a little tobacco!?

Bell'Antonio by Hilde Soliani - Tobacco leaves darkened with coffee.

Or Black - dark and mysterious with a slight hint of tar and leather.

Domenico Caraceni - tobacco, rose, leather.

Epic Man, Amouge - starts out incensey but settles into a dark mysterious leather/tobacco.

Serge Lutens Serge Noire
Olivier Durbano Black Tourmaline
Histoires de Parfums 1740
Sonoma Scent Studio Fireside Intense

...no tobacco though.

Yup - and Kurt nearby talking about a snail on the edge of a razor blade . . . way, way upriver.

Actually Noir Epices may also be relevant to this discussion - it also has a dark sort of tropical rainforest closed-in, no light getting thru the trees overhead. It takes me to Java (clove - duh) where you can walk 50 paces and it gets very close and fetid under the canopy.

By Killian's Back to Black and Straight to Heaven.
Easy question; Kouros
Oh, I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Magie Noir by Lancome is certainly dark and mysterious. I've been thinking about it a lot lately. A girlfriend used to wear it. There was something witchy (in a good way) about it. I think it would be awesome on a guy.
Black Cashmere / Donna Karan : Spicy Dark , no tobacco though
Wenge layered over Fuel for Men (both by Donna Karan) : Amazing dark!
Eau Noire / Christian Dior : Dark Lavender
Chergui / Serge Lutens : Dark & Sweet, probably the best in this category
Or Black / Morabito : Smoky and bitter but not for everyone

Kohdo Wood Collection: Dark Amber & Ginger Lily

Trussardi Uomo

How about Montale Aoud Cuir d'Arabie? It has tobacco, it's dark and mysterious (not sure about sexy, though). Or Parfum d'Empire Ambre Russe? Gotham by Neil Morris? No tobacco, but certainly dark and sexy as hell, both of them.

angel men, bois du portugal, m7
Fumidus, Serge Noire, Olibanum, Paestum Rose
post #33 of 45
I agree with the people who listed Van Cleef & Arpels PH fully. No other fragrance, at least in my collection, defines "dark and mysterious" better than it.
I would agree with the choice of Trussardi Uomo, and I would also definitely add Francesco Smalto pour Homme to the list.
After just testing it, this definitely fits the bill. It's dark like Poe. I'm talking about the soon to be released Amouage Memoir Man. It's got an amazing absinthe accord to open it, and then it dries down to something like a darker, almost gloomy take of Gucci PH (but smoother and rounder/deeper).

Molinard Habanita - not only for the black bottle. It was too weired for me, and I adore Secretions Magnifique. As anybody suggests regarding his suggestions, I would suggest to give it a try, Habanita:

sweet fruit in sharp "metallic" dissonance to ashtray/smoking debris of any kind versus dirty vetiver versus powdery vanilla without any smoothening by modern woody ambers

On some people it works and comes out sexy in a "dark" may be "forbidden" kind of. Read the reviews!

Seconding:
Or Black
Idole

Czech & Speake Cuba
Black Aoud

Plus:
Fumerie Turque
Eau des Îles
Onda
Tribute

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Dirty Rose
and perhaps
Jubilation XXV and Lauder for Men

I wear MI most often too.

Consider:

Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille

"Layer" Spiriteuse Double Vanille (Guerlain) with some Seqouia (Comme d' Garcons) for that cedary-humidor and vanilla pipe tobacco effect. Carefully balance and don't use too much of EITHER or you'll end up smelling like cake batter or chopped wood. I've done it successfully.

Vintage Ungaro III is dark and a bit mysterious. My only gripe with it is that the longevity is pretty mediocre. Otherwise, I'll second it. Somebody already mentioned Black Orchid as well. As a man, if you can pull BO off, it would be a very dark, sexy one to go for. I wear it frequently and love it.
