I never thought buying bed sheets would be this hard

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for some great, soft bed sheets. I already have some pretty comfortable ones, but I want something truly soft and luxurious. I'm kind of thinking either Sateen or Egyptian cotton, in about the 500-600 range, as that (along with higher thread count) is what my research tells me is the best. The problem is that there isn't really an awesome, stand-alone "star" product when I look on Amazon, which is what I often use to gauge what the general public is buying and rating highly.

From the relatively well-rated products that I researched so far, I get a lot of differences in opinion. One person will say that they are the best and softest sheets ever, and yet another will say that they are stiff and feel like sandpaper.

I actually picked up a 525 Pima Cotton Sateen sheet from "Bed, Bath and Beyond" a couple days ago, and immediately found it to be uncomfortable, stiff and scratchy (almost all of my other sheets are softer). I've since learned that you're supposed to wash it a couple times (don't even get me started on all of the baking soda, vinegar, etc. tips I've been reading about) to soften it first (which I will do tomorrow). I will probably return it if it doesn't improve, and order something well-rated on Amazon. If someone has some knowledge in this area, please let me know.

Egyptian cotton in the highest possible thread count you can afford... If you want really soft, then consider vintage from an auction. If it is proper Egyptian cotton or pure linen, then they should be perfectly strong. People let these sort of things go for a song because nobody likes ironing any more and want polyester in the mix. The vintage ones sometimes have the most beautiful lace at the top, or pinstripe tucks. They aren't made that way anymore. There is always silk....

Pima and Egyptian cottons are the two best cottons; they both have long fibers. But I would think your sheets are just stiff because of the sizing that is added to stiffen fabrics so they will look good at the store. Wash them-- I think they'll be okay.

I have had some problems finding a good cotton sheet too. The best I found are by The Hotel Collection - which you can get from Macy's. 600- 800 thread count ,100 % egyptian cotton.. The higher the better. Smooth and satiny .
I got a set from Bed Bath and Beyond that claims to be 600 thread count and 100 % egyptian cotton but feels terrible. It's not smooth at all - feels more like flannel !
EDIT: I went to check some of my sheets- I also have Rainbow Linens brand of cotton sheets of a pretty high thread count- can't remember what now - they are satiny and smooth too .

Vintage is a great option for those not needing king sized linens - nothing beats the feel of cotton that has been washed and ironed countless times. No standard for new sheets, who can count thread count without a microscope? Take the BBB sheets back and try the nice department stores for silky sheets.

I refuse to iron sheets. I try to fold them warm from the drier and hope for the best. My favorites, though, I confess are the ones from JC Penney with a bit of polyester in them. They seem crisper and I enjoy the feeling of crisp, cool sheets. The very high thread count pure cotton sheets wind up twisted around my legs in a sheet ball. I'm not a still sleeper. :B I agree that Macy's has a good selection, though, if you're looking for good sheets. They always have had.

I did some research on this just recently... ignoring budget (ie between $200 and $1000), here's my research:

Re: Bedsheets, these are some of the best out there:
Pratesi (Italiana) – one of the best out there
Frette(Italian) – one of the best out there (not hotel line) - http://home.shop.ebay.ca/i.html?_nkw...286.m270.l1313
Yves Delorme (French) – http://home.shop.ebay.ca/i.html?_nkw...286.m270.l1313

Others:
Sferra – Their Modal line. No less the 300TC. Try Giza 45. http://home.shop.ebay.ca/i.html?_nkw...286.m270.l1313
Signoria di Firenze – http://www.linoto.com/Linoto-com-Lin...-Set-p/lst.htm
Linoto –
Venus Rising Ltd (http://www.venusrisinglimited.com/page/VRL/CTGY/Sheets) reduced prices on ebay at http://stores.ebay.com/Venus-Rising-Limited

I think buying sheets (or any kind of textile...or fragrance, for that matter), is really one of those retail categories for which internet research doesn't help much. You already know the thread-count range you want, but as others have said, you can find crappy 800-thread count sheets that feel rougher than quality 400-count ones. My advice is to go to Macy's or somewhere with lots of sheets, and just feel them. Your sense of touch will tell you what you like with greater accuracy than Amazon.com.

I usually hunt at TJMaxx or Ross for sheets, I've found 600tc there and they are super soft cotton and haven't paid more than $40 for any set. You can check overstock.com as well, lots of people post their reviews.

Wow, this is one of my "obsessions", check this stuff out:

Signoria Di Firenze: www.signoria.com
they're 100% italian, top quality stuff. One of my favourite brands so far, fantastic design. Quite expensive but incredibly beautiful and confortable. As far as I know they're also available in the us.

Bellora: http://www.bellora.it/splash.php
One of the most popular italian brands for badsheets since 1883. Extremely expensive and classic. They have top quality cotton and linen.

Somma: http://www.somma.it/page.asp
Another outstanding outfit. More affordable than the previous mentioned but still top quality stuff.

Super soft sateen sheets with a very high thread count (like the ones Frette, among others, make) are nice, but I prefer something more "substantial" like a tighter damask or crisp percale.

I recently purchased some 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sateen sheets from Garnet Hill ... and would highly recommend them. Soft, smooth and generously cut.

Sam's club has very nice 700 TC Cotton sheets for 80 bucks for the king set. THis includes fitted sheet, top sheet, and two king pillow cases. I can vouch for the comfort level. I have these on my guest bed.

I have 1500 TC Egyptian cotton sheets from Italy that I spent 3x as much for on my personal bed and there is not much different in the level of comfort.

Oddly enough, the 550 TC sheets at the Westin in Orlando smokes both of these offerings. I am wondering what the difference is...

The previous message was brought to you by one who has only your comfort in mind, whose first post on Basenotes is a commercial one,  but.. has no commercial interest in selling sheets whatsoever. Any trashing of Basenotes Posting Rules is purely coincidental.

Thanks Regards You
