American Psycho Patrick Bateman

I actually loved that movie. Christian Bale- so hot in it too- I believe he does ashtanga yoga in it too - if I remember correctly .

i think he also has drakkar in there...if you read the book, he goes into even more length about his grooming

In the book which I read a long long time ago - he makes note that he wears Obsession for men, Paul Sebastion. Also before he kills one of his friends he check out his medicine cabinet and comments to himself how tasteless his friend is to have a bottle of Paco Rabanne Pour Homme.

I notice in this clip a Caron Eaux De Pure which was not launched until 1996 - not the 80's which this takes place in.

It is YSL PH indeed, although I always pictured him far more likely to be a "vaulted Creed" type

Bateman is sort of a hero of mine, so I think I watched that scene frame-by-frame quite often, just to see what brands were in the cabinet. I think I spotted something by L'Occitane.

Remember though, these items were mostly set-dressing and not really meant to be taken as absolute canon or even specifically noticed by the audience. Read the book for more info. if you don't get disturbed like I did before getting half way through it..

You'd think so, yes. But this is where you run up against the scent knowledge limitations of the author, and then the screen writers and prop people. That book and movie were made long before sites like Basenotes existed, and I believe Creed was still establishing themselves with GIT and BdP. Pre-internet, those two probably sold fairly well, but didn't get the kind of traction the web has given them (as is true with many other niche scents).

The author did a great job of elaborating on things like pens, business cards, and many trendy materialistic pursuits at the time, but he had little frag knowledge (Obsession!? C'mon. EVERYBODY wore that). If it was written today, Bateman would probably own Xerjoff or Amouage, and commenting on how tasteless it was that the friend he killed wore GIT.

I think he would wear Caron L'Anarchiste, purely for the blood note.

Good book...I agree though, pretty disturbing at times. Also, whole chapters devoted to music that occasionally droned on.

I think some of you have missed the point. Patrick Bateman was supposed to be what was wrong with modern men, not a role model. American Psycho was one of the very few books I thought was so purely pornographic I just threw it away without finishing it. Ugh, ugh on Patrick Bateman and everything he stands for it - or wears.

I think that was the point - mindless recititation of reviews and critiques that Bateman had taken straight from Esquire, GQ, etc. The author may not have even intended those passages to be read in full, but noted as examples of how fervently Bateman believed in and relied on pop culture guidance.

So, if the bottles in the cabinet in the movie were accurate to the book, the bottles would probably be of whatever the trendsetting magazines of the time had featured that month. The collection would be revolving constantly.

IMO.

P.S. Creepy book. It makes the movie look like Sesame Street.

Slightly off-topic, but since this idea was previously mentioned on this thread, I would be curious which kind of frags and grooming products a more contemporary version of Bateman (should the novel and the film be released, say, in 2010) would be using, what perfume and grooming ranges would a present day "tall, dark and sociopath" ritzy-murderous-slightly dandified-NY urban young billionaire would be using?

My little analysis above aside, I think Xerjoff. Very expensive, and it just sounds a little bit sinister.

yeah, thats actually the point of the book..it was banned in some circles and libraries and was protested because of its treatment of women characters, homosexuals, animals, etc...but the point of the book is that he is crazy, he is a misogynist, and potentially a homosexual in denial, which is the reason he rages against women and homosexuals because of the inability to accept who he is. The man is a pyschopath, not one to be idolized certainly....Brett Easton Ellis is himself an admitted bisexual and part of that story line reflect his own inability to come to accept nd embrace his sexuality with it at one point in is life. The book is supposed to be ironic and is supposed to disgust your every sense and sensibility....I think what is intersting though is the movie, though fairly close to its source material, was made by a female director and made to be darkly comedic and obsurd and when you watch the movie versus read the book...you get a different feel due to direction and nuanced performance by Bale....the movie makes me laugh every time I see it becasue of the lunacy of Batemans self absorbed persona....the shower scene sums up his entire personality....also as a note, its specualted that he may not have killed anyone at all throughout the entire movie/novel...look for hints(he never kills his fiancee, secretary, Louis, or any of his other friends besides paul and his lawyer claims that one of his victims talked to him the day after he was killed at the last scene of the movie, plus Kimball points out that Paul Allan was with Bateman at the time of his dissapearance....interesting)

I watched the film but never read the book. I just downloaded the ebook and will be reading it online now. Sounds good!

Patrick is also very Armani Eau PH and Aqua di Parma Colonia.

I believe he would have moved onto some Armani privé -possibly- , and maybe even other less designer and more "proper perfume house" type scents (Carthusia, SL, Santa Maria Novella), and of course, bespoke scents.

I don't really see him in Creed nor Amouage. Perhaps some of his buddies are users of those already.

Off-topic but I got halfway through the book and I think it's brilliant. It's almost a book about nothing but everything at the same time.
