You'd think so, yes. But this is where you run up against the scent knowledge limitations of the author, and then the screen writers and prop people. That book and movie were made long before sites like Basenotes existed, and I believe Creed was still establishing themselves with GIT and BdP. Pre-internet, those two probably sold fairly well, but didn't get the kind of traction the web has given them (as is true with many other niche scents).
The author did a great job of elaborating on things like pens, business cards, and many trendy materialistic pursuits at the time, but he had little frag knowledge (Obsession!? C'mon. EVERYBODY wore that). If it was written today, Bateman would probably own Xerjoff or Amouage, and commenting on how tasteless it was that the friend he killed wore GIT.
