The bite of the Red-Bellied Black Snake, native to the eastern coastal and contiguous eastern inland areas of Australia, while seldom fatal to humans, can cause just awful permanent olfactory problems including:

Cacosmia--Smelling something rotten that isn't really there
Anosmia--Loss of sense of smell
Phantosmia--Smelling something that really isn't there
Dysosmia--Smelling something differently than its real smell

I'd sure as shit sooner be bitten by a red bellied black snake and lose my sense of smell, than by a taipan and lose my life!

Interesting, though.

How horrid ...

How does it do that? Does it attack the nerve center that controls smell?

What a horrid side effect.
I thinks smelling something rotten and phantom, all the time would make me very, very depressed.

I think this could be used in some high-stakes perfumista shell game. "One of these bags contains a sealed bottle of Djedi; the other two contain Red-Bellied Black Snakes. Reach in and see!"
