Looking for something like Chanel No 5.

My mission is to find a more masculine version of Chanel No 5 for women. I love the smell of this, but it's too feminine. What makes it this way to my nose is the "makeup" accord. My mission is to find something near identical to No 5, but without this accord. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks

Jubilation 25 for Women, or Gold Men - both are aldehydic florals. I'd say Gold Man is more masculine but Jub 25 doesn't read as overtly feminine to me either, on my skin at least.

Eau Premiere is a great suggestion, too.

I've not found many other aldehydic scents like that for men. Maybe Rien by EldO, although it goes into a different direction (leather/incense).

No 5 Eau Premiere has a citrusy opening, but yeah I agree on the rest. I just bought Frederic Malle Iris Poudre for the same purpose you mentioned, and it's fantastic. It's more masculine than no5, but still feminine though.

Just go for the real stuff! No big deal as far as wearing it. I picked up No.5, No.5 Premiere, and No. 19 at Sephora last weekend.

Wore them during the work week and it went fine. No problem at all.

Agree that Gold Man is a great -- though very pricey -- recommendation. I don't like it much myself as I have some issues with aldehydes.

Just pulled out my sample of Eau Premiere though and it's pretty damn nice. Also, No 5 in extrait is phenomenal.

I would also suggest that you try Liu by Guerlain, it's like a cross between No 5 and Arpège.

The bottom line is that there is nothing like Chanel No. 5. It is a unique work of art. The versions in the series (EDT, EDP, Eau Premiere, and parfum) are all a little different from each other. A No. 5 lover usually just picks the version he or she likes best.

Is Eau Premiere's longevity and sillage similar to Chanel No. 5?

I love No. 5 and like the OP, I too would like to know if there is a similar scent. Eau Premiere lasts on me like a weak cologne and for that price I just can't.

Malle's Iris Poudre is like a more modern take on No 5, but it actually plays up the make-up-ish iris, so that might be even worse. If you've got a thousand bucks burning a hole in your pocket, you might like Clive Christian No. 1 for Women. If your budget is smaller than that, check out Old Spice again. Yes, I'm serious. Old Spice. It's heart is closer to the heart of No. 5 than anyone here would be comfortable with, but it doesn't have the iris-heavy base.

Interesting that you should post this...I recently purchased the new blend of Robert Piguet's Calypso and was impressed by its similarity to No.5 but pleased that it had a more masculine quality. All that great aldehydic quality without the softness. Well, there is a touch of softness to it but there is also a unique warmth and low- key spicy quality that butch up dry down.

It is one of those frags that is marketed as feminine but is more masculine than many of the new, high fashion men's frags at your local dept. store. Not the most unique creation ever, but certainly distinct amongst most contemporary frags. Further, I think it is near perfect match for your purposes here- that notable No.5 feeling with a more masculine base.

Rive Gauche and Arpege (the women's versions) are both worth a shot, but No. 5 Eau Premiere has been referred to so often as "No. 5 Pour Homme" that Chanel should seriously consider relaunching it as such. Luca Turin (all hail!) has specifically pointed this out, about both No. 5 EP and Arpege, as well as Byzance.

I meant original Arpege (the "promise her anything but give her Arpege")- it's sometimes compared to #5. The Arpege PH is very different. Another scent that you might try is vintage Zibeline by Weil, but it's harder to find.

What's the verdict on the Eau Premiere?

Still haven't found Eau Premiere anywhere. Finally got my nose over a few Chanel's though at Ulta that I've been wanting to try for a while. Allure Sport and Platinum Egoiste being 2 of them, I wish I had tried these 2 before the boring super synthetic Allure, which I found to be super overrated and just bleh. Platinum Egoiste surprised me with its very herbal opening that I wasn't expecting, and Allure Sport just smelled ok, I guess I'll have to try full samples of these in the future. Chanel No 5 is a masterpiece though, but I can't pull it off. This reminds me of my feelings towards Noir de Noir by Tom Ford. At first sniff, I was blown away by the beauty crammed into that fragrance, that something could smell so nice, rich and elegant. But, I found it rather feminine. I gave it a few more tries and what do ya know, I was able to pull it off. I guess my skin finally accepted it, and with figuring out just the right application, and where to wear it, as well as when to wear it, and what kind of weather to wear it in. I'd like for this to be the case with No 5, but after repeated attempts, it's just not working for me. It smells just as beautiful on my skin as it does in the bottle, but as a man, there are certain standards with fragrances. You can say wear what you love blah blah. Well I love No 5, but I'm not about to smell like a woman. LOL Anyways, can anybody recommend where I can find this Eau Premiere in person? TY

Have you tried the International Plaza Nordstrom? Give them a call, I'm pretty sure they carry it as all Nordstroms have Chanel counters.

Personally I don't like this fragrance I find it very dated and give props to Chanel to be able through constant refreshed advertisement to have this scent still be popular. Again my opinion I would not want to have any women I now wearing this scent - it smells too much like grandma to me.


I also do not know why a man would want to smell like this also - its kind of over the top transvestite? One men's scent I found to be kind of close to this scent is Royal Copenhagen - it is very powdery and sweet with aldehyde quality.
