Creeds, Creeds, and more Creeds

So I finally got around to trying a number of Creeds from Neiman Marcus and I have to say I'm anything but impressed...

Green Irish Tweed - It smelled green, grassy, and slightly floral...there was really nothing I found impressive about it, other than the fact its not going to offend anyone

Millesime Imperial - This one I kind of like but nothing amazing...it smells nice, its that simple. Kind of fruity, clean, and just fresh

Original Santal - my second favorite of the bunch I tried...minus the fact I own it already: Joop! Homme anyone?

Silver Mountain Water - my favorite, but not because of the notes (although they were nice!) It smelled...COLD! I'd never experienced something like this before I smelled it and literally said "wow!" It smelled/felt cold, clean, and refreshing, like a mountain stream. Out of the bunch, I'd buy this.

Virgin Island Water - aquatic...nicer than any other's i've smelled but its still an aquatic so I wasn't impressed by it

Aventus - although interesting because of the pineapple, it quickly became boring and generic smelling to me

I do have an overall comment however: I usually get kinda dizzy and lightheaded after smelling so many fragrances, but I didn't have that happen to me with Creed. I think the natural ingredients are much less harsh on the nose, and I have to respect the House as a whole for that

I also tried Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford again and I really enjoyed it. I actually decanted myself a sample from Nordstrom...which was probably a bad idea since an SA came over a minute later and tried to sell me the whole damn shelf! It was kind of funny too, considering it was the same SA that sold me Pure Malt, and I'd talked with her numerous times before...yet she did not recognize me at all, strange considering I said I love A*Men and own Pure Malt as well. Weird service!

Speaking of SA's, the one's at Neiman Marcus were rather friendly. I got asked at least 5 times if I needed help...the one annoying comment was "Sir, you are in the wrong section, this is women's fragrances, men's are over there"

First, hopefully you tried these on your skin, as with all fragrances. It's even more important with Creed because of how dramatically they evolve. It's alright to not like something, but I find that a lot of people set themselves up to dislike Creed by setting unreal expectations. I know for myself the quality is very apparent and the scents just work for me.

I love all the Creeds you just mentioned. At first, when i first sampled Aventus, I thought it was only "Okay". The next few times i started using it, I fell in love with it. Also the girls love Aventus. I had a girl text me "I smell your aventus on my sheets still" and she wanted me to wear it again. She smelled it on her sheets for about 4 days later!

I own all the creeds you mentioned except Original Santal. Hopefully you tested everything on your skin and even got samples!

You are not alone in not being too impressed with Creed after being exposed to all the hype.
Thanks for your write-up. I should give SMW another sniff.

I pay absolutely no attention to hype. I do on the other hand, pay attention to my nose and personal tastes. I am concerned with quality of ingredients and have an aversion to completely synthetic fragrances. You mentioned that you were dizzy and lightheaded after you tested other fragrances houses. I would have walked away with a migraine from so much synthetic exposure. I find I have absolutely no reaction from Creed products as was your experience. I have tested 14 different Creed fragrances thus far and these are my favorites.

Aventus
Original Santal
Millésime Impérial

I happen to be in NM two days ago and gave a smell to another few Creeds. I think they are well crafted for sure. I guess it's just that there are very few of their compositions that I really like.

I agree with this too, having just sampled MI, GIT and SMW. SMW was also my favourite of the bunch, but the other two seem dramatically overhyped. I would agree though, that the quality in all three is definately apparent, over and above many designer offerings. Still, I wouldn't mind getting through another half dozen of them to get more familiar with the other releases.

I used to detest Creed's. i thought they were overhyped and overpriced.

My first was Himalaya, which I still do not particularly care for, but now I have acquired SMW, GIT, MI, Original Santal, Royal Water, and each one has a place in my wardrobe. It took some time, and I do not reach for any of them on a regular basis...(for example I would not trade any of them for Encre Noir, and it cost me a third of the price, but they are all unique and well balanced.

Im not fond of Creeds either. The only creeds I would buy is SMW and Himalaya, but not worth the price! Rather get a Bond :-P
post #11 of 24
Rather get a Bond?? I hope that's a joke!!

As with all fragrance lines, there are some good ones, and there are some bad ones. However, you don't often hear someone say that they absolutely hate a Creed fragrance. Some may be a bit "meh" (as I am with Himalaya), but when they get it right they REALLY get it right, and when they get it wrong it could never be classed as terrible.

I think the biggest issue people have with Creed is the price. If they priced the 70ml bottles at £60, a lot more people would love them, but then again people who appreciate quality fragrances made with high quality ingredients would perhaps stop liking them, as they'd quickly become far less exclusive, and the quality of the fragrance would also suffer due to them having to supply a greater market.

I think I would rather spend the day testing Bonds over Creeds myself. Maybe it's the ambergris that kinda gets under my skin.
Although not my favorite house, I have no issues with any of their men's or unisex offerings.

Creed has been making excellent fragrances for 250 years now...gee, I think they must be doing a lot of things right. They give "longevity" a new meaning. I like many of their offerings, such as GIT, MI, SMW, Vintage Tabarome and Green Valley.
When compared to the clothing designers who add a fragrance line as an afterthought (of which there are many) and who have no clue about making fragrance themselves (or hiring people who claim to), there is quite simply NO comparison.
This firm stands for excellence in making fragrance, and they are one of the very best at it.

I just have tried GIT and SMW. through the reviews, i could imagine what other creeds are. I like SMW. It has a special scent for me. Though very short longevity it has. Those are not worth with this price.
With about 130-140 USD, i prefer to have Serge Lutens with long lasting.

No Joke! I have about 3 Bonds in my top 10. No Creeds! Bonds smell so good, I even wear 2 of the women Fragrances from Bond =]

I need to try some Bonds..hear a lot of good things... As for Creed, GIT and MI are amazing in my opinion.
Neurosis im surprised, i like (and own) a lot of frags in your wardrobe and thought you'd have similar opinions to me on Creed.

I love GIT, MI and Aventus, i own all three and have samples of Himilaya SMW and OV, i rate Creed highly, especially the three i own, they are some of my favourites!

I've just bought Aventus after using my sample up, i've warn it out in public 3 times now, the first time i got such good compliments i made a thread about it! And both other times people have asked me what i was wearing as it smelled so good, 1 girl made me write it down for her!

Each to their own i guess, but if you didnt test the Creed's on your skin, i hope you go back and try that!

They've been making fragrances since about 1970, the original exclusive tailoring business having pretty much collapsed after WWII.

Pay $250 for a creed and what do you get in return? Longevity of 4 hours max on many scents, loss of top notes after 1-2 years, bottle color change, sub par projection, batch variability.

"They give "longevity" a new meaning." They sure do, expect a whooping 4 hours max on our fragrances because ingredients are all 100% natural.
Better ways to spend 250 dollars + tax.

I see that the prices are so different in each country. Here minimum is about 115$ for Acier Aluminium (3 oz) and max is about 145$ for GIT (4 Oz)

Every single Creed fragrance lasts easily 8+ hours. You need to tune your nose to smell natural fragrances as opposed to the synthetic bombs most are used to smelling. That being said, I where some of everything including some synthetic bombs, and every single Creed fragrance lasts (including MI)

Delusions of grandeur! Creeds have synthetics as well, synthetics play a vital role in perfumery since they do increase longevity and increase stability. Natural isn't better or worse, it's subjective. That said, many creeds don't last and that's a fact.
