They just don't understand meeeee!

So I come to you in mild desperation. I've just moved to Canada and will soon be experiencing my first real winter, and so, to help me through it I want to purchase my first truly wrapped-in-cashmere, fireside comfort scent. I'm just getting started in really learning about perfume, so your insights would be greatly appreciated!

My much-loved summer scent is Bulgari Omnia Crystalline -- on me, it wafts a light lemon-ice, lemon-rind scent, with guaiac wood undertones. I loved that it was fresh without being ozonic or cucumbery or, God forbid, fruit-salady/sugary. I especially loved that it wasn't obviously feminine.

For winter, I'd love something warm and maybe slightly gourmand or smoky, perhaps woody, not too sweet and definitely not shrill.

So far I've tried Mitsouko (urinous on me), Shalimar (far too sweet), DK Cashmere (fades to nothing), Poison, Hypnotic Poison (I can't detect the musk so it seems empty on me) -- no dice. I kinda like Samsara, but my husband is underwhelmed by it.

I explained this all to the SA at the Bay this afternoon... and she sent me home with samples of Vera Wang For Women, MJ Lola, and CK Beauty. Surely not?? Really not feeling confident in those. Everything else she had me sniff in bottles just screamed "SUMMER FLOWERS!" or "TOILET FRESHENER!"

Do you good people have any suggestions for things I should sample? Preferably not extreme niche stuff that I couldn't track down in a Holt Renfrew/Neiman Marcus/similar.

Welcome, Coco Belle. (And welcome to an impending northern winter.)

This is an interesting challenge you've presented us with. DK Black Cashmere is the usual go-to recommendation for a winter comfort scent. For non-niche access, I'm put in mind of Prada, Tabu, Opium, Obsession. If you like roses and amber, Stella Rose Absolute might be pleasing.

You want Sonoma Scent Studio! Woody, smoky, warm scents made for winter -- Fireside, Winter Woods, Champagne du Bois, and a ton others. The prices are very reasonable, and you can order samples direct from the designer.

If you want something that will definitely be available in a department store, how about Gucci by Gucci EDP? Warm, dark, woody, rather unisex. It does open sweeter than it dries down, but it smells like it was made for a grown-up, not a girl who wants her perfume to match the scent of her bubblegum.

Did you try DK Cashmere mist or Black Cashmere ?There is a VAST difference between the two .
Second Quarry's recomendations for Opium -I'd recomend men's and women's,Tabu, and Obsession.
Cinnabar, Spark,Toujours Moi,and With Love by Hillary Duff are other options you may mant to try .

Have you tried Omnia, just plain Omnia, in the brown bottle? This is one of my favorite scents, very comforting and "warm" to me. I think it might meet your " slightly gourmand or smoky, perhaps woody, but not too sweet" criteria. It is spicy deliciousness, for sure!
I second Opium. Also Prada (the one in the pink box, not the newer ones). And have you tried Cacherel's Loulou? I love that one for winter.
A very good suggestion of Donna Karan Black Cashmere, please try it.

Also:
Serge Lutens Borneo 1834 (patchouli-bitter chocolate)
Yves Rocher Neonatura Cocoon (vanilla, chocolate)
L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu (vetiver based smoky scent)
Lalique Encre Noire pour homme (yes, it is for men!)
Hermes Rouge (miniscule amounts)
Chanel Bois des Iles (sandalwood)
Calvin Klein Secret Obsession (read today's post by Pomander on the second page of SotD thread)
Comme des Garcons Incense series (there is more than one to choose from with sort of smoke in every one of them: ethnic vs sauna vs church vs meditation)

You can find many samples of the above at The Perfumed Court (theperfumedcourt.com) -- they are not cheap, but still it is cheaper than paying big dollars for a bottle that does not excite you and let it just sit collecting dust.

Coco- can you fill in your perfume profile a bit more, you listed what doesn't work, but how 'bout a few that do? Was your version of Mitsouko EDT? If you picked it up at the mall my guess is yes, it was. The EDP is a completely different animal.

Also, what most folks are directing you to here are niche, i.e., can't get in mall, unless it is Barneys, Saks or Niemans. Are you close to these stores?

What popped into my mind is the discontinued but still available on ebay 'Organza Indecense' and I probably spelled that wrong. I also second Thalia's suggestion of Sonoma Scent studio. Hillaire is giving great suggestions too, and if her preferences match yours these are great choices.

Good luck!

Malle's Musc Ravageur is a good one. Also Lutens Ambre Sultan and Lutens Fumerie Turque.
Welcom to Basenotes Coco Belle!
Yes, do try DK Black Cashmere.
I also second the Opium suggestion (both men's and ladies').
I guess a lot of suggestions are about spices and vanilla too. If that's the case how about TM Angel or Boucheron Jaipur (both men's and ladies')?
I'm not a fan of Malle's MR but you can try L de Lolita Lempicka (very similar vibe and the same nose). It's easily found and not expensive.
Also,
Tom Ford Black Orchid
Dior Midnight Poison
Chanel Bois des Iles and/or Egoiste.

BTW, how wonderful that your husband is even interested in your fragrances and expresses an opinion.

Parfumerie Generale's Cadjmere (no.18) might tick your boxes, though it falls short in being a niche fragrance (sorry!)

My image for vintage Le Dix by Balenciaga! It's timeless style, elegance, warmth and yes, cashmere luxury. If the reviews in the directory appeal to you, I'd suggest a sample and then ebay.
When I last wore it I was lying next to a tiled oven (on a cold wet day) reading a book and the discreet (meaning not loud) wafts I got were simply incredible. Thank heaven I have my back-ups!

Welcome!

Hmmm ..

My favorite warm-me-up scents have been mentioned, but let me cast some votes for them.

Bulgari Jasmin Noir: easily available, a very warm but not shrill scent. Not at all sweet.Like Samsara on Valium. Also easy to wear--never too loud, others seem to like it a lot. I get more compliments on this than on anything I wear.

Chergui (Serge Lutens): more niche that you wanted but so worth it. My go-to winter fragrance. You must like coumarin to like this one.

DSH Fireside (and many others) : Indie, but excellent prices! Worth ordering a sample pack from her--there were several nice, warm winter scents in there.

Black Cashmere:you can still find this on line at a reasonable price. A treasure!

PF Cadjméré: really wonderful (but pricey niche) Definite vanilla notes, but unsweetened and on a woody base

[Winter Star by Michael Storer--Indie; gourmand musk; fabulously cozy]

Hello, Coco Belle! Welcome! If I think of any other suggestions to add to the excellent ones already posted (unlikely) I certainly will. But just wanted to say hi.
Welcome to Basenotes Coco Belle! Most of my suggestions are already listed above, make sure to try the Black Cashmere, I think you will really like it.
I can't think of a cozier, cushier, more beautiful cashmere-blanketty scent than Bois des Iles, unless it's Coromandel, if you prefer patchouli to sandalwood....or Coco if you want it sultry and spicy, too.
I like how Chanel does cozy and warm.

Since you are new to perfume and want more easy to obtain scents, here are a few:

Angel by Mugler- a gourmand classic, don't know if you have tried this one
Donna Karan - the original scent, her Cashmere line was supposed to go with this, but it is stronger and in the woody smoky category that you wanted. I actually dislike Black Cashmere (too much patchouli), but love this one.
Must de Cartier - the new stuff is musk/vanilla/woods seems very "winter" to me, you WILL smell the musk in this one (haha)
Nu by YSL - reminds me of the others above, a bit harder to wear maybe, but if you can find it you might as well try it out

I like some of the ones already mentioned, like Bvlgari Black, the Serge Lutens fragrances, especially Fumerie Turque, and Chanel Bois des Iles and Cuir de Russie for winter too.

Also, your post made me think of Piver's Cuir de Russie that I have a sample of. It is supposedly unisex, but actually kind of masculine. However, it is the epitome of winter to me. It opens with birch and the drydown is leather and woodsmoke, with a touch of wood and something slightly sweet (amber). It might not be your thing, but it is my idea of a fireside winter scent.
You've received great suggestions already!

I'd like to recommend Guerlain Tonka Imperiale. It feels really cozy to me, with only a trace of tobacco, but with a rich, smooth tonka bean note in the base.

I second Chanel Coromandel, but only if you like patchouli.

I also like the idea of Chanel Coco, but the parfum version.

Have you ever tried Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon? It is definitely a winter fragrance, and the pure parfum has some almost chocolaty quality. It is not sweet.

Another one: Serge Lutens Arabie.
Great suggestions so far. I'd like to add Aomassai by Parfumerie Generale, it could be just what you're looking for. Or Winter Woods by Sonoma Scent Studio. And Lutens of course, nothing beats a good Lutens in winter - Fumerie Turgue, Arabie and Ambre Sultan in particular.

What city are you in?
Etro Shaal Nur (soft citrus top notes, incense, woody, hint of vanilla, unisex)
Parfum Sacre (creamy, spicey, incense)
Organza Indecence (vanilla custard, cinnamon, tonka, woods)

Wow you guys. Thank you so much for all the suggestions! This is much more than I expected!!

To answer a couple questions -- I'm in Calgary, and we have a Holt Renfrew here, which carries a fair number of the nichier things. I know they have Lutens, Hermes, the rarer Chanels, Comme des Garcons, Jo Malone, Diptyque, that sort of thing. Possibly parfum or EDP versions of Shalimar, etc. too. I don't see them having SUPER niche stuff though, so I'll start modestly with the more mainstream scents.

I must say I'm very interested in Sonoma Scent Studios though. Winter Woods sounds divine, as do the incense ones. I may just order a few 5mls.

Things that have worked for me in the past are mostly summer scents, since I've never lived somewhere with a real winter (or indeed a real fall or spring). The only cool-weather scents (well, cool by MY standards) I've worn that I've enjoyed are Samsara and Coco Mademoiselle. My husband is OK with Samsara, he finds it pleasant, but Coco M makes him feel sick. When I've tried a Chanel, he generally turns his nose up, and I wonder if it's some kind of common note or composition. Aldehydes maybe? Or perhaps Chanel in general is a little too "minor European heiress" for his tastes.

Also, yes, isn't my hubs a gem! He's much more conventional than me, which is probably good, otherwise I WOULD be dousing myself in Dzing!. Not that I wouldn't enjoy that, LOL!!

Re: DK, yes, it's Black Cashmere I've tried. I will keep a lookout for it though, I tried it in an African summer which may have been a bad idea chemistry-wise. I have also worn Angel (totally forgot about that!) and it reminds me strongly of being young, dumb and aggressive. I also find it extremely sweet.

Anyway!

I've compiled all your suggestions into a spreadsheet. (I am nothing if not committed.) I have 16 "mall" scents and 27 "nichier" scents, and 18 that fall somewhere in between, so I'll have to ask around and see who stocks what.

I can't thank you enough for the warm welcome too. I hope at some stage I'll be able to start contributing in this forum I've read so many of your reviews and have such admiration for you all.
You're going to have soooo much fun. Spreadsheets are cool. "Enjoy the journey," as my husband reminds me. And, as they say in Canada, "Keep your stick on the ice." (I honestly don't know what that means.)

I logged back in to take a look and lo and behold, DeepSilence & Siifter, I am wearing Opium this very day I'd tried it years ago and hated it, but my tastes have definitely changed... wow. It's a stunner. Seriously considering picking up one of those delightful [cheap] coffrets from the Bay.

HOWEVER... you guys. I tried Coromandel [edt, obviously] on Friday.

O.
M.
G.

I will never be the same again.

I get emotional just thinking about it. I don't have words... it's just too perfect. I was close to tears on the train on the way to work, breathing it in as it developed. So perfect. Just beautiful.

And 12 hours of staying power -- 12 whole hours of paradise. WOW. I don't want to put it on again because it's just too beautiful, I don't even want other people to smell it. I want it all to myself.

Where am I going to find $250???? GAHHH I must have a bottle. At least it's an enormous bottle, I mean it's not that expensive when you think about it... I'm going to guard my sample with my very life.

Also picked up Bois des Iles & Cuir de Russie samples (can I just say the Chanel SAs are just dolls?! I was amazed by the sheer friendliness and excitement to share their advice, no pressure to make a sale, just a lovely experience). TBH I tried Coromandel first because I thought I would like it the least, based on reviews... well my LORD, if I like the other two as much as I liked Coromandel, I am SCREWED. $750???? And this is me STARTING OUT in perfumes? Oh dear. It'll be beans on toast for a month. (and it will be WORTH IT)

I also sampled Black Cashmere and Chaos. Still underwhelmed, though I see BC's merit for sure.

Also... another SA, upon hearing my plight, offered me samples of Acqua di Gio. For real?? As a heavy winter scent?? I don't get it. (She was a very nice lady though. I got my Opium & Belle d'Opium samples from her too, so it's not all bad.)

Going to retest Coco tomorrow. After the pleasant surprise of Opium, I think it's worth trying it again after several years' break.

Thanks again for all your help. More suggestions are welcome! Hope you all have a peaceful & happy Sunday!
