The Question-Answer Game - Page 63

A hypothetical scenario, I'd like you to place yourself in.
Your eleven-year old son rides in a carpool with three other children. You split the responsibility with two other moms and one dad.

Anyway, it comes to your attention from you son that the 'dad' driver does not wear his seat belt while driving carpool. It's a shock to you that an adult with a child would not demonstrate safety, or that any adult, for that matter would be such a foolhardy arse.
Very frustrated, you decide you cannot just 'let' it continue (your son could be in the car while this man got arrested!), so you nicely go out to the dad's car with your son, and say goodbye to everyone. You say, "Okay, safe trip! And everybody be sure to buckle up!"
But your son comes home and informs you he did not buckle up that day.
This morning, your son decides to ask the dad to 'please buckle up', also nicely. And the daughter of the non-buckler turns around and shouts, "It's our car! it's not your business!" Your son, who is very sure of himself and bright replies, "It's a Federal offense". And the dad does not buckle up!
Your son is uneasy the whole way to school, and it's the first thing he tells you about when you pick him up.

What do you do? Where do you go from here?
I would simply not let my son ride in that car again. End of story.

How do you feel about people who are known convicted child molesters released from prison, living in your neighborhood?
I would not be comfortable at all with it. They better stay away from my house and my theoretical kids.

Also would be extremely upset by this.

What the best aspect of your personality?
Hillaire, how about a friendly talk with the dad?
Ultimately I feel he won't buckle up.

As long as your son is buckled up whats the risk?
Being pulled over by a police has no effect on your son right?

Best aspect of my personality is my dedication.

What should Hillaire do?
Not let her son ride in that car again.

Which company produced in your opinion one of the most memorable TV commercials?

Budweiser - Respect

How do you usually express the romantic side of your personality?
I'm quite demonstrative when it comes to showing my romantic side, for something specific though, if I were to "do something romantic for a man ", I'd probably cook. Just a note on this, I think the most romantic thing a guy did for me was to write me letters when he was away for a long stretch on a job. The letters were wonderful and he always sealed them with sealing wax. I still have them, although we didn't end up together, they were just too special to throw out.

Hillaire - that is quite a dilemma with the driver who won't buckle up. You obviously don't want the guy to be driving children around and still, it puts you in quite a spot, especially that after all the broad "hints" he still won't put on the seatbelt.

Are you comfortable with public speaking? ( large or small audience )

Unaccustomed as I am . . . to ever having an unexpressed thought, yes.
Plus I love to improvise.

How old were you when you first saw the film The Red Balloon?
Wait a minute!
Have you seen The Red Balloon?

I am unaware of that movie.

If you were to be custodian of an island and responsible setting the laws, what major laws would you set?
Controversial issues...

Of course I've seen The Red Balloon, a fabulous fable indeed. I must have been around eight or nine, but I have also watched it within the past ten years.

Probably would make laws about how the inevitable limited resources would be allocated. Not sure, though, what you mean by controversial issues. I'm taking "island" as the operative word in the question.

When presented with a question, do you tend to think about it too much?
Always try to over analyze it.

How do you feel about home teaching?
IMO home teaching has great qualities but lacks a very important aspect about development even when you try your best: The social environment schools provide. Also because it's very out of the ordinary, the children may feel alien.

I am not in favor of it at all.

When you were a small child, do you remember being afraid of the dark?

Yes. I KNEW 'something bad' lived under beds and in closets and dark rooms. I guess I was just lucky that 'it' never found me...\\

How many shades of grey do you have for evaluating ethical issues?

Several depending on the issue at hand.

What in your opinion is an adequate response to a student caught cheating on an exam in higher education?
A right mix (proportion is yet to be established) between penalty and, even if it sounds paradoxical, responsible, educational pardon (the latter, as an attempt to instill responsibility into the "culprit's" future demeanor)

A fellow librarian of my father printed out some scientific materials for me, after displaying them on a primitive terminal, after searching for them somewhere else. It was very crude, early internet, but it totally freaked me out, despite being pre-browser, with a tiny terminal screen. It was one computer talking to another one hundreds of miles away and getting data back instantly. Very mind-blowing!

For educational research I guess in the early nineties, can't remember exactly.

Other than fragrances, what is another guilty pleasure you enjoy immensely?
Fragrance isn't a guilty pleasure for me, at least not as I define a "guilty pleasure", i.e. something which you should not enjoy (because it is bad for you, immature, too mainstream, or whatever), but do anyway.

Smoking is a guilty pleasure for me.
And another thing, besides perfume, which I enjoy acquiring to the point of it hurting my pocketbook is skin care products. Love all the hype, love the results, love the experience.

Do you watch American Idol? If so, what do you think of the girls this year? (I am stunned.)
I don't, no. I actually watched the very first season, but I haven't seen it since then. I'm not crazy about the musicians that come out of it, so it's just not for me. I hear they're coming up with one for DJs, and I do love electronic music, but that just sounds like a joke. I don't see any good coming out of it.

(I'd choose acting, and Meryl Streep to teach it to me)

How difficult is it for you to make friends with people from other cultures?
Difficult with cultures that tend to be reserved. Then again I think they face that difficulty with any other culture.

same Q
Depends on the person and what part of any culture they subscribe to. I have no real interest in making friends that subscribe to e.g. a violent, criminal, homophobic, etc culture. Unless they're female and look nice

Same q
I have no problems making friends from other cultures, especially if mutually accepted limits (if any and not just the ones conditioned by cultures) are civilly, inoffensively and non-judgmentally accepted (even non-verbally) from the first stages onwards

What was the latest film/book that totally gripped you, i.e. the plot, the characters, the situations etc., were so intense, so credible, so lifelike that you anxiously waited to see what happens next?
Strange as it may seem, especially given the words "credible" and "lifelike," Malick's Tree of Life captivated me. For me, what's lifelike and completely credible about the movie is our investment in memory and all of its workings. For the same reason, Julian Barnes' The Sense of an Ending seems so lifelike with its evocation of memory, loss, and identity.

Being bi-cultural, and the 'product' of very disparate sociological frameworks, has taught me a lot about what transcends cultural groupings, in terms of bonding behavior and demonstrations of affection. Consequently, one thing I have developed (and that I treasure in myself), is my ability to 'mow' down cultural boundaries, in my interactions with others from all around the world, and to focus on what universal human expressions of good will and cordiality I am fluent in. And I am so happy to have a lot of friends from cultures that surprose even me. The secret? Be unreserved yourself (nothing is more disarming than being unarmed), and expect nothing (be cool, it's all good).

The last film that had me writing in mental anguish ....
in sympathy with its character, was Shame. I won't dive into any details, as it would not be appropriate. But if your threshold gfor shock is very low and you appreciate incredible insight and stunning acting, please see it.

What acting performance last riveted you, and why?
Meryl Streep in the Iron Lady because Margaret Thatcher was such a multifaceted and complex person and i thought that Meryl nailed the performance and captured her personality wonderfully.

How easily can you be shamed by others?
Moderately easy, I'd guess. If ones takes the average value between certain situations, issues, questions, about which I am too sensitive and, on the other hand, further situations, issues, questions hardly anyone could shame me about, the result is pretty even. So, to keep it short and sweet, totally average and totally in the middle- in terms of shame and of being shamed

Do you describe yourself as fashion conscious? And, if so, is there a particular fashion brand, a particular kind of garment or accessory, a particular fashion statement, or even a particular grooming range, a particular cosmetic or (obviously) fragrance brand, in which you are willing to invest almost any amount of both money, but also time, enthusiasm, patience, expertise etc.?
I'd like to think I am fashion conscious. I love Armani tailored suits. IMO they are quite classy and although pricey worth every penny.

Same Question.
not at all.

what's the maximum amount of money you would lend, without expecting it to be paid back.
I would say I'm fashion conscious as well, I love Lacoste clothing, I think they are very well made and are very stylish and I always get complimented when I wear some of my Lacoste items. For the very high end stuff I would say Gucci. The stuff is top notch and incredibly well made.

This past summer a victim of credit card fraud while on vacation luckily only in the amount of $163 which my credit card company quickly followed up on and reimbursed me for suspicious charges coming out of the United Kingdom while I was in Delaware. Scary though.

Do you ever ponder how your life would be if you were suddenly all alone with no family members or close friends left?
No I do not ponder that.

Do you believe in aliens and djinn?
The latter are beings we cannot see that live on earth with us.
It's not the damned Hollywood definition of djinn.
Don't believe in them.

What would you do if you witnessed someone shoplifting in a store?
Thread Starter
Interesting question! I think it depends - if it was a young person I'd approach them and tell them they shouldn't be messing up like this. If it were an adult I think it would depend on how poor the person looks and what kind of store it is. If it is a big chain store I wouldn't do anything, but if it is a small family owned business, I might tell on them.

I'd run over and tackle them, the whole time screaming, "Call 911! Citizen's Arrest! I got 'em".
Actually, just like Klute, my feelings exactly.

I don't believe in aliens, but I do believe in djinn, very much so.

Have you had any supernatural experiences?
Apparitions, sounds, even sensations quite close to being described as visions- but, since I am not much of a believer in the supernatural, I still question myself as to whether it was only induced by fatigue, strenuous living habits etc.

What was the most beautiful, most inspiring, most fulfilling time of your life, in terms of strictly intellectual/artistic/cultural experiences, accumulations, achievements?

Probably the time when I was attending film school - back then I breathed and lived the art of filmmaking, it was my one and all. It was a very inspiring and exciting time but I am very happy that I have since discovered other aspects of life, like being in nature, being in love, being lazy on a sunny Sunday afternoon. :-)

When you have a problem do you get a lot of advice from friends or do you decide what to do on your own?

I usually go to one friend who has knowledge/experience in the area I'm having the problem. I try to get expert advice and then make my own decision after thinking/praying/meditating on the matter. I don't like to go to too many people for advice, it is too distracting and confusing. But it depends on the situation, of course.

Always try to seek advice from knowledgeable people be it friends or relatives.

Your preference - a relaxed bath or a quick shower?
I try to make it a one minute or less water flow: Quick shower wet down--water off--soap down, scrub and quick rinse with water on and quickly off. Anything else to me is a waste of a disproportionately shared natural resource so many worldwide have to struggle daily to obtain enough just to keep body and spirit together.
