l would like to post a picture of my collection in the relevant thread, but in the box "posting permissions" it says l may not post attachments. Please can you tell me how to enable this function? Many thanks!
I upload my photos to Photobucket and then copy and paste the image code in my post.

To be sure it's working you can click on Go Advanced and preview your post.

Can you tell me which steps you take when you are trying to post a pic? I don't know this 'posting permissions' box you are referring to. When I post a pic, I use 'go advanced', then the 'insert image' icon (which looks like a picture of a tree...), then a box pops up asking if I want to add an image from my computer or from an url, then I can select the pic I want to add.

ps. I've noticed that I can't do this in a pm though, only on threads/forums.....

Thanks morrison, l tried that but the box just asks me for a URL, it doesn't give me the option to use a pic from my computer. The permissions box is at the bottom of the page when you are replying to a thread.

Are you using the 'go advanced' option? If I don't use that, I get the same result as you.

If it's not that, then go to 'settings' (at the top of the page, next to profile)> general settings> misc. settings. Make sure your 'message editor interface' is set to 'Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing' and that your 'Enhanced Attachment Uploading' is set to 'Enhanced Attachment Uploading on'.....hope this helps!

I've been using photobucket teardrop and so far no problems.

Photobucket is an image hosting site with password to access. It's free (and I believe you can pay for extended services as well.)

l did as you advised morrison but it hasn't made any difference. l just don't get why this has to be so difficult! Thanks for taking the time to help, though!

Ok l might give that a go, thanks. lt does seem daft to use another site though when the pics are right here on my computer!

Teardrop,I followed Morrison74's advice and it doesn't give me the option to use pictures from my computer either.

Grant are you there? ls there no other way??
Just tried it again and now I get what morrison74 said, the box comes up and asks for either URL or if you want to take it off your computer. So make sure to try it again.

l tried it again, it still only asks for a URL. Seriously, this is doing my head in.
Did you change the 2 settings he mentioned? If you did everything he said, send a message to Grant and I know he'll answer as soon as he can. I had a problem last week and he got right back to me.

Go to "contact us" on the bottom of the home page.

Under 'general settings' there is also a 'Thread Display Options'...one of these is 'show images'...is your box ticked?

Reporting back; l didn't get a reply from Grant yet, but l just tried again to post a photo, & lo & behold, this time l got the option to use a pic from my computer! So l guess he just fixed it anyway, either that or the perfume gods were smiling on me, thanks Grant if it was you! The photo has come up as a link in my post rather than an actual picture, but the link works, so l guess that'll do!

Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to advise me!

Glad you got it sorted teardrop- with a little more praying to those perfume gods it may even appear as an actual picture soon!

Whenever I try to insert an image in a post (using the "insert image" button), it always winds up as an attachment, i.e. the filename appears in my post and has to be clicked on. What am I doing wrong?

Did you try any of the above suggestions ebear?

On TinyPic, where there is a box to put in the properties of the pic (www. etc which can be had by right clicking on any image onscreen and left picking "properties" and copying the string that appears ) there is aan empty box with "Browse" on a clickable tag to the right of it. When you left click that "Browse" box it takes you to your computer pics where you can double left click on the pic which will automatically put it in the blank box back in the TinyPic screen. Then you left click on the appropriate tab to upload to the TinyPic site. (you need to sign up in TinyPic to have an album to save it to). When it loads onto your TinyPic screen from your computer you can copy the option for pasting into boards--it will have [IMG) on both ends--and when copied you can paste that string into your post and it will appear as the picture in your post when you post it.

If you just get a clickable link in your post you have copied and pasted the wrong string. Use ONLY the string that has an [IMG] at both ends to show the pic itself in your post.

Phew!

Thanks for the thorough description, kbe!

So, does all of this mean that an image (not a link) can only be inserted in a post using an external service like TinyPic, i.e. not directly from one's computer? If so, I wonder why the option to insert an image from the computer is offered at all.

No, I insert my pics directly from my computer to BN. I'm not sure why yours are showing up as attachments only....

Testing uploading directly from computer:

Edit: Looks like I have to keep using Photobucket too!
LL

That was done through the attachment (paperclip) window, uploaded then dragged to the bottom window and attached.

Or is it supposed to upload straight to the post? (I always get "please enter the URL of your image" when I select the "insert image" icon.)

I have to save the image to tinypic to get it to appear inline.

Don't know if it matters, I'm using Chrome on a Mac.

Yeah, I've never been able to upload a picture to anything but an attachment.

That said, the photobucket method is very easy. I never even bother with the BN upload method. I just copy and paste a URL from my photobucket collection, with image tags already there, or just snag the bare URL and add the image tags myself. Photobucket just makes the tagging REALLY convenient.

There is even a free photobucket app for iPad and (I think) iPhone. But there are lots of places on the web to put your stuff now. Any place that hosts your pictures will work.

The bottom line is that all you have to do in a post is surround a URL for a picture with \\[IMG\\] in front and \\[/IMG\\] in back (backslashes added to prevent interpretation of square-bracketed objects as image tags. Tags are case-insensitive.).

Grant prefers that we not link directly to other people's pictures, for legal and web ethical reasons. So you just make your own copy according to your personal and regional interpretation of copyright law, put a picture ANYWHERE on the web, get the URL, and then do this (minus the \\ characters):

\\[IMG\\]http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn189/cologniac/cologne%20pix/IMG_4680.jpg\\[/IMG\\]

and you get this:

<---- software turns wrapped URL into image

It is an extra step, but it probably saves BN some server space anyway.

That's the way I do it. It's actually easy and my account with Photobucket is free.

Can anyone tell me how to make the images I post look as large as they do before I post them? I used to be able to post images that looked pretty large, and now all of them look about as small as the image in the post above by teardrop. . . .
