I'm testing Malle's
Portrait of a Lady tonight. It's really very beautiful - I love this kind of dark rose - but it's not anything I haven't smelled before. Future wearings could of course change my opinion and I'll have to eat my words, but as of now I would only consider purchasing a bottle of this if I ever ran out of
L'Arte di Gucci, which I prefer. I get none of the alleged oriental aspect of PoaL, and I don't get the comparison's to Parfum Sacré
at all, which isn't very rosy to my nose anyway. To me, Portrait of a Lady is a dark, dry rosy patch with some subtle spices. L'Arte di Gucci, Diva, Paestum Rose, Dark Rose, Midnight Oud, Rose Oud, Montale's rose aouds ...and maybe Caron's Or et Noir and Lorenzo Villoresi's Donna - these are the fragrances I find myself comparing it to. It's very nice, but not very new.
eta - I just refreshed a bit and I found something so reminiscent of SSS's
Vintage Rose in the topnotes that I'm thinking of digging out my sample of that (not as easy as it sounds) to do a side-by-side comparison. I love Vintage Rose and ironically, PoaL could turn out to be just the thing I need to convince me I should own a bottle.
