Under the Radar

Thread Starter
What are some of the better fragrances that are under the radar. Under the radar meaning that you don't smell it everywhere and also you don't hear it mentioned in any "Top 10" thread post. I'm specifically looking for niche scents. I'm getting tired of hearing about Musc Ravageur, New Haarlem, Chergui, Tobacco Vanille. I'm not saying you smell these four frags everywhere you go, but these are RAVED TO HIGH HEAVEN in every post and every youtube video review. Surely there has to be other top notch niches.Thanks.

Well since this IS the Radar, go find something that's not talked about on here much and there you are!

Aigner Black awsome leathery, no one cares about german designers, even Jil Sander has no hype and psychofans here

Look into Pascal Morabito Paris, Or Black. Also, check out some Etro offerings, especially Shaal Nur and Palais Jamais; Dior Bois d'Argent cologne; Robert Piguet Bandit; Miller Harris Feuilles de Tabac and Terre de Bois; Lubin Idole de Lubin; and Hermès Rocabar.

These aren't exactly under the radar on Basenotes, but some of the newer posters that seem to dominate the board like to focus on the ones you mentioned and a few others. Guerlain doesn't get much love from these young guys either, but there's a treasure trove under that name. Older heads know the ones I recommended, and others as well.

It depends upon what you're looking for. Just saying "niche" doesn't mean that much to me, because some BNers want a simple frag with really powerful, natural-smelling notes, while others are looking for something with more traditional construction. I suggest Messe de Minuit, but again, though it's not one of the commonly-mentioned ones here does not mean you will like it, even if it is "objectively" great and unique.

I'll add my top. Since Montale has had a lot of misses with his myriad (probably 10 too many) Aoud releases, the newer release Wild Aoud has gotten very little notice since it became available here and not just a Middle Eastern exclusive.

That one just knocks me out every time I wear it. Only thing I've owned that makes me want to start hoarding out of fear it will go away and I'll not be able to get it someday.

And on the hoarding it note, I notice tonight that Luckyscent.com has the Wild Aoud for $60 off.....darn it I need to save some money right now too.

Agreed. And since there are several which are being /have been discontinued that can still be found at retailers (Philtre d'Amour, Attrape Coeur etc.) you might want to purchase one of those while you can.

There was a little discussion of Costume National Pour Homme when it came out a year ago, but it's been almost non-existent since.

Agree with the original poster. The same old "special" scents are raved about over and over again. Of course, people can mention whatever they want. That is the point of a forum. But its interesting how the same ones...Chergui, Green Irish Whatever, Tobacco Vanille.....its always the same ones that are sought after.

Anyways, I'll stop whinning .

Here is the under the radar scents I like :

Nina Ricci Ricci Club
Santa Maria Novella Opoponax
Miller Harris L'air de Rein
Roberto Cavalli Black
PdN Rose Pivione
Hermes Rocabar

A couple that are new, hidden from notice, "under the radar" and are good and should be looked at . . . if you like this kind of scent are:

Sombre Negra edp by YOSH - This fragrance is predominantly tobacco and patchouli with Choya Loban (clay pot distilled frankincense) and this scent stays in the range of these three notes but along the way are sprinkled in bits of mushroom, vetiver, pepper, oak moss. A very dry and damp leaves and earth essence fragrance.

Meerchaum parfum oil by Soivohle Studio - a mossy tobacco and leather scent that is beautifully blended. Very rich and full of tradition notes. Mostly a rich tobacco fragrance. This oil is definitely the equal to any of the much more expensive oils from Amouge but with a unique flavor/fragrance profile.

Etat Libre d'Orange Tom of Finland is one I would consider an "under the radar" niche frag, and a must-try.
