New Fragrance: Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve

From Bois de Jasmin:

Following the classical trends of the spring, Clinique has released a limited edition version of their 1972 iconic fragrance Aromatics Elixir called Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve. It has a stronger white floral accent of jasmine sambac and tuberose set against the mossy-woody structure of the fragrance.

It includes notes of bergamot, orange blossom, verbena, clary sage, jasmine sambac, rose, tuberose, patchouli, myrrh, vetiver, dark woods, labdanum, resins.

This sounds promising

Oh heck yes. MUST!!!
Could it be that a large perfume company has actually listened to the ranting on the perfume blogosphere about reformulations? So many have expressed wishes for "reserve" versions of classic perfumes. Almost seems too good to be true. Is it the 1972 version or something different, does anyone know?

Has anyone actually seen this in a store or smelled it?

From nstperfume.com:

Clinique celebrates the 40th anniversary of Aromatics Elixir, the 1971 classic chypre developed by perfumer Bernard Chant, with new limited editions including a new interpretation of the fragrance.

Aromatics Elixir Perfume Spray ~ the original fragrance in a collector bottle, in 100 ml. (left, $55).

Aromatics Elixir Perfumer’s Reserve ~ “AROMATICS ELIXIR PERFUMER’S RESERVE uses cutting-edge molecular distillation technology from Grasse’s renowned Laboratoire Monique Rémy (LMR) to create a fresher, smoother, modern interpretation of Chant’s original.” Developed by perfumer Laurent Le Guernec; with rose, jasmine, myrrh, patchouli, orange flower and peach. Per Le Guernec,

AROMATICS ELIXIR is one of perfumery’s most dazzling compositions. It is referred to as a masterpiece because of the beauty of its formulation, the sumptuousness of its ingredients and its unforgettable sillage. I wanted Aromatics Elixir Perfumer’s Reserve to attest to the genius of the original, while yielding a fresh perspective. I hope that in Aromatics Elixir Perfumer’s Reserve, the woman who is addicted to the original will find a new way of experiencing her beloved Aromatics Elixir, while women who thought the original too potent will find this modern homage alluring. It is a scent for an extremely feminine woman who knows what she wants and goes after it with beguilingly subtle wiles; the legend of one generation passed on to – and reinterpreted by – the next.

In 25 ml. (right, $75).

Aromatics Elixir Solid Perfume Necklace ~ the Perfumer’s Reserve fragrance in “an elegant amber locket – emblazoned with the flower symbol – to be worn as a pendant, or secreted into an evening bag.” In 1.4g. (not shown, £50).

The first two items can be found now at Macy’s.

Finally - hooray! Thanks for the update!

Great stuff - thanks !

I really want to smell the new one - quite affordable too. $75 is the new 'discount'!

Ain't that the truth , Mike !
I smelled this today. It's definitely quieter, not quite as nose-piercing as the original fragrance, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the longevity. Mind you, I dabbed this on my hand, at the department store so perhaps if I wore this fully as a fragrance it would've 'stuck' more. I liked it, and this is coming from someone who's tried to like the original fragrance more than a few times and failed.

The solid perfume is very cute, but I can't imagine owning that, solid perfume is a hassle to apply.
That's great to know, Mike. I love Aromatics Elixir, but I couldn't wear it. I'm looking forward to sniffing this new one. I sniffed the AE bottle again recently at the mall (I didn't spray), and I said, "Nope, still can't wear that." However, another one I tried again after many years (and I don't know how many reformulations), and that reminds me of AE, is Magie Noire. I may have to get a bottle of that. I really liked it and found it wearable, kept sniffing my arm all afternoon.

What's weird is the SA swore that this Perfumer's Reserve was just like the original...even though I knew it wasn't (this was Macy's, BTW)...when clearly when you look at the bottle is says 'Parfum' on the back of it. Frustrating.

This one *sits* nice lilybelle unlike the original which has such strong sillage. And the bottle is really intricate and pretty - very Lauder-esque.

I haven't smelled Magie Noire in years, I remember that my mom had a bottle on her nightstand for years I've sort of forgotten what it smelled like.

I was in Macy's, too, and I didn't see the new AE. Maybe it isn't here in Virginia yet, or else I just didn't notice it. I was passing through. Looking forward to sniffing it in NO, hopefully. There was another recent AE (Velvet, was it? something like that?) that I smelled on a SA, and it was fantastic on her. I almost didn't even recognize it. But that is AE - always smells better on someone other than myself.

Magie Noire, the current verison, smells quite chypre to my nose, a little spicy, and also "sits well". I think some people bemoan the older formulations, but I like this one. Well, I'll have to give it a proper testing to be sure. I get overwhelmed when sniffing more than one away from home.
I have grown to love AE! I think it's currently my most worn fragrance. I can't wait to try the Perfumer's Reserve.
Oh that's right, Saks will have this one, maybe we can smell it together in NoLa - that will be nice.

Hope so.

Diva, glad to know you and AE are getting along well.

Well, if you always wanted to pay a lot more money for a watered-down version of AE with little sillage and tenacity, this would be the thing to get.

I'm pretty disappointed. My recommendation is not to blind buy, although this seems to be the only way to buy it right now.

I'll probably return it to Macy's.

It is a little different from regular AE aside from having less sillage. The vetiver is much more prominent. Also, I detect an animalic note. I've read about an animalic note in AE original, but never really detected it. I did here.

Different strokes, as they say. It is those very same things about it, that I enjoy. An animalic, vetiver prominent chypre with light sillage - what's not to love!?
I think I learned a valuable lesson here. I'm crazy about AE, I think it is magical. Something that is almost, but not quite, something you love could be as apt to annoy as it is to delight.

Maybe I'll hang on to this and see if it works better than AE original for me in hot, swampy weather. I never wear AE in the summer because it falls apart into an oversoaked teabag type of thing for me.
Ray gave me a bottle for my birthday, wow it's such an adorable bottle / packaging (modeled on the same brown/gold style that Tom Ford utilizes) and the scent is nice and toned down. It's a splash bottle so I am going to decant some into an atomizer and spray it on later to see how it behaves rather than dabbing on.

I really want to have this as I am so in love with the bottle and the solid is gorgeous too but would prefer the bottle, however, sadly it is not sold in Hungary. My mom was a big fan of the original and I remember liking it myself, only the original is sold here and it would be worth having the Perfumer's Reserve just for the bottle (and for the place Aromatics Elixir has in the books of perfume history).
I wonder if we have it in the UK yet? Haven't seen any ads. I don't know whether I'd buy it, but would at least like to sample it. AE isn't my favourite frag, but I seem to "need" to sniff it once in a while so I always have a bottle of the original version. I also like the Velvet Sheer Philtre version, but that's out of production now.
You may want to ask, I think in Hungary only the regular AE is available in a gift box for Xmas. I called a store to ask but I should probably call their main store. Since it is LE, I doubt that it will be available if it is not available now for Xmas. AE is not my favorite frag either but I do love it regardless, since the LE version is different and apparently more modern and a tadbit lighter I am wondering if it is just perfect for me. Oh, well, I may never find out as it is the case with so many nice frags that are never marketed in Hungary.

I haven't given the Perfumer's Reserve a full wearing, but I did test it on my skin and imo, it smelled very much like the Velvet Sheer (which I love and have backed-up several times) as well as the perfumed body cream, so I didn't feel any need to buy the PR ...although the lovely bottle itself does make a purchase rather tempting.

You know what? After our discussion last nite I went down to the mall and guess what, it has finally arrived, yaaay! The bottle is amazing and the price is really good for a perfume concentrate. I tested it on my wrist and it was gorgeous, an instant love. I had one put on hold and will go back this Friday to get it.
I need to find this, sounds very good!
It is just beautiful, really of a quality most frags lack today and because it is LE and the bottle is stunning it will definitely be a collector's item. I am thinking of getting the solid as well, that one works as jewelry too.

well, I was going to ask the question: If I love the original Aromatics Elixir, and it loves me too, will I love the LE Elixir?
But now it's a moot point, since I just ordered it, blind. Thank you, petruccijc.

You are welcome. I like to be an enabler....
I love the original but I love the LE even more, somehow it has a very unique twist to it and it is slightly more feminine and modern but with the original deep base, I find it different mainly in the top and perhaps a tadbit in the heart. Love mine, have you received yours rtamara and if so are you happy with it?
I also love both, OVincze, and I agree, I prefer (to a certain extent at least) the LE. It is less assertive than the original, very smooth and comforting. Rtamara, I hope you will share your thoughts on it!
Leesee and Ovincze, your comments are encouraging, I will certainly post my impressions once the elixir arrives.
I am wearing it now.

The white floral notes are the first thing that I notice as different when I spray this on...sort of like 'What are those doing there?'. But they contrast with the big bone structure of AE nicely and add a bit of depth and volume to the top notes which IMO were the most difficult part of the original for me to enjoy. The original was a scent I always wanted to like (same goes for Aramis 900) but I couldn't help but recoil from the chemical abrasiveness of the top notes. This is all but avoided in the Perfumer's Reserve.

I have been trying different application methods (the bottle is a splash top so I sort of assumed it was meant to be dabbed vs. sprayed) and tonight I tried decanting it and spraying it on, only 2 sprays (1 to the chest and 1 to my left arm) and I like the results.
I still haven't been able to find this in my area. I even went out to Tysons Corner and most of the clinique folks I asked didn't even know anything about this perfume...smh
post #41 of 56
I recently had a chance to sample this at the airport.
This version is more floral and sweet than the original and is smooth and easy to wear. Perfumer's Reserve would be a good choice for those who find the original too harsh and strong. I personally love and will stick with the unsweetened Ur-Aromatics. Pretty bottle though
post #42 of 56
I complete agree with mikeperez23, exactly my thoughts. The LE definitely opens more floral and thus it is more complicated, contrasted and complex than the original, the beautiful, warm and deep base is still there but the entire composition is just really unique and gorgeous, my first impression when I smelled it; I shouted wow this is fantastic and that rarely happens to me that I feel a fragrance is so perfect.
In a world of mediocre releases from the big ones like Clinque, it's been my pleasure to experience this new Reserve Edition.

Love it, bought a bottle for my wife - she loves it. Old school at its best.

I got my bottle!
I think it's lovely.
I tried it today. After reading this thread I knew not to expect the nose tingle you get with normal AE. It certainly smells like AE did when I was much younger but AE always had radiance and silage which this just doesnt. Smell very much like a less raw Eau de Soir
post #47 of 56
Still waiting for my order from Dillard's they keep saying it is "on order" and has not been shipped. Hope they don't cancel on me
post #48 of 56
I finally opened my bottle, the packaging is so beautiful I have waited and waited on opening it. When I smelled it I was the same impressed as when I was when testing it. I love AE but it does lack the complexity of this limited edition in the top notes. I still have not used it as I am reserving it for special occasions at the moment but we will see))
My mother has it now, and after getting to know it a bit more I still say it smells exactly like the discontinued Velvet Sheer - I think it's the same formula. It's definitely recognizably Aromatics Elixir and quite gorgeous, but without the extreme patchouli blast right off the bat it's certainly more wearable than the original. But I don't think it's more complex at all - I think it's actually stripped down a bit, cleaned up, cleared out, and a lot more transparent, like Eau Première is to Chanel No5. Both are very beautiful so I'm glad I don't have to choose, but I think the Perfumer's Reserve, like the Velvet Sheer, will be much more accessible, especially for anyone who has a problem with the original AR.
You could be right although I have heard others comment the LE is more complicated but I think it is due to the fact that the top is a bit more complex and more flowery, which adds a more contrasted facet but that may not mean that it is actually more complex, perhaps that is just an impression some get. I am wearing it for the first time today and sooo love it; so deep and warm but a bit more feminine due to the more prominent flowers. It does not quite have the sillage the original has and I wish there was a travel version in a regular bottle too to take with me, the bottle is so gorgeous I am almost afraid to use it and definitely worry about it leaking, can you imagine AE all over your purse and what a waste it would be? I cannot comment on the Velvet Sheer as I have never smelled that though this is suppposed to be a completely new creation. Wish I had a way to compare.
I agree Evangeline. I bought a discounted bottle of Velvet Sheer in Tenerife and to my nose it's exactly what is in the AEPR I tried. Beautiful and more refined than AE
post #52 of 56
I do not remember the Velvet Sheer smelling so floral in the top notes.
This sounds like something I need to buy! Ugh, I am supposed to be studying so I can make a good living, but hanging out here always seems to provide me with ideas for more ways to spend! At least this is quite affordable... And the bottle is sooooo cute! Perhaps the lighter floral notes make it a "springtime" AE, which is a good excuse for buying? (Ha, who am I kidding? I wear the original AE anytime of the year anyway, lol...)
Would be cool if Clinique did the opposite: "Aromatics Elixir pour Homme" with the florals turned down and all the sharp bitter greens dialed way up. Then they'd get me on board. Simply too sweet and feminine for my taste.
I wore AE for over a decade every single day. I love the classic chypre "elegant old French lady" smell of it. I was so excited to get the Reserve to test it. First of all, the packaging is gorgeous, total collector's item. I put on both about 20 minutes ago. The white flower notes on the Reserve were totally jarring--I typically stay away from over-the-top florals like jasmine and gardenia because they are too "perfumey", and my first reaction was "Blech!" But as the two sit on my wrists, the Reserve starts to show the "bones" of the Original, with the wood, rose, and patchouli notes revealing themselves, combining with the white flower notes to create a younger, more contemporary scent. The longevity leaves much to be desired though--the Reserve is already fading while the Original is still going on strong.

I still prefer Bernard Chant's original formula, but I will admit that the new version is the best updating of a perfume of any I have tried. Bravo, Clinique!
You are right, it is really good agreed but then I have stated that above. I do use both and right now since the weather is freezing I am using the regular AE, perfect for this weather, it does last really really long with that grand sillage and the next day if I leave my coat from the previous day at home when I enter the house it smells just wonderful, love the base of the original. However, what I do prefer about the limited is that it is a bit more modern, more floral, bit more feminine and sultry if that is possible. I hate how unpractical the bottle is; though gorgeous it spills really easily and you cannot carry it with you. I still really love the original, best for winter days though disagree it smells old lady, it does have a classy, sort of a vintage scent but hope I do not smell old lady)). I have both and am enjoying both very much, similar but yet different. Actually, the LE does last on me all day long too though I definitely apply more than one drop but then I use more than one spritz of the original as well. Glad that there are so many fans here, I also love Wrappings, that one is really unique to me. The only thing that beats me is how come Clinique can "spit out" fumes like these just like that but yet nothing new they have come up with has been any good for a long time. Not that Happy is unbearable, it is not but it is just not in the same category as AE or Wrappings IMHO.
