Fragrances released during your birth year!

Thought this might be fun!

What were the standouts? Do you own any of them? Was it good fragrance year?

Do tell! (If you feel comfortable sharing your birth year, that is )

I was born in the year of Derby, Third Man, Green Irish Tweed, Poison, Antaeus Sport, Boss no. 1, and Obsession (women). A pretty good year, I'd say! I own large decants of Third Man and GIT, and Derby is very high on my wish list.

[Edit: I see this exact thread was posted about a year ago. Oops. Oh well, we will have new people answering the question this time around!]

1990. I'm still a young'n.

First and foremost, Chanel Égoïste - one of my favorite fragrances.

Also, Monsieur Balmain, probably my favorite lemon fragrance.

Ralph Lauren Safari (for women) - a green floral chypre that is in my opinion unisex.

Cerruti 1881 - a great fresh/green fragrance for men.

1966 - in the BN database, there are only 12 fragrances released in that year. I recognize names like Aqua Velva, English Leather, and Avon. None of the other names ring any bells with me. There are a couple of men's fragrances that are still in production - Kanon and Eau Sauvage. Maybe I should check them out for misterben.
Azzaro PH and Dunhill Blend 30.
Love them both!
I'm from 1982

The only fragrance from this year that I know is Drakkar Noir.
Industry question - why are there years where so few fragrances are released? It seems like there are a million a year now. Is that because marketing budgets are expanding, there are more flankers, more niche houses, etc.? Were there years historically that were unusually productive?

'66 is huge because of Eau Sauvage alone. That is a towering piece of perfume history. You should definitely try it.

I'm another from '78 but being a noob, have yet to even try the classic APH
post #9 of 97
Ditto.

Only one I own/enjoy is GIT.

That is an very complicated question to which there is no single answer. It's some combination of:

1) Expanding market size

2) Perfume being regarded as a lower-level purchase, rather than a true luxury item, as it once was

3) Companies knowing people will buy new things, and therefore releasing "new" scents for no reason besides the need to have something fresh on the shelves (hence summer editions, flankers, copycat releases, and other minor releases which go out of production because they don't have any true, creative lasting power).

4) It costs less and the return on investment is higher if you create a whole bunch of cheap, crappy perfumes and push them on a willing market rather than develop a few quality scents, which would likely be overlooked in favor of new crap anyway. This is due to....

5) The average consumer's inability to distinguish between newness and quality, and desire to fit in with the current fragrance trend.

Sigh. YSL bucked this trend for many years, and what did they get in return? Awesome, overlooked fragrances sitting pathetically on the bottom shelf at fragrance discounters. So they threw up their hands and now we have La Nuit.

'78 is another top year in perfume history! Polo, Azzaro, Van Cleef & Arpels PH, Devin, Cinnabar, Anais Anais, Loewe Para Hombre.

'81 is huge as well! The four horsemen of the '80s powerhouse apocalypse: Kouros, Santos, Bijan and Cacharel PH (plus their gentle escort, Antaeus).

We have a lot of relevant fragrance year births! Coincidence? I think not!!

1977

Not a ton of notable frags, at least not ones that are on my radar, but a big year if only for the release of:

YSL Opium

A few others of s I have come across here and there: Marbert Man, Miss Worth, Revillon Pour Homme, Oscar (that's two big ones from Jean-Louis Sieuzac in '77), CSP Vetyver Haiti. All in all, no men's scents I wear often, but I am a fan of Opium, though I don't wear it. I have a feeling I should sample the Le Jardin Retrouve line, though, and they seem to have launched all of their men's scents in '77.

Regards,
T

I don't really recognize many from 1970 and definitely don't own any. Here are a few I have heard of.

Cachet
Bill Blass for men
Hermes Equipage
Royal Copenhagen
Selection Verte
1972. I recognize these 2 but haven't tried either:

Drakkar by Guy Laroche

Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur
1971. The year of the birth of Chanel 19, which I love. Also Aromatics Elixr, which I have never smelled!
'71 as well. Only recognise No.19 and YSL pour Homme.
1977- Nothing really stands out in the directory except Opium for women and Marbert Man which I've never tried. On the other hand I wish in 1980 when I was 3 years old I would have stocked up on 2 of my favorites Patou Pour Homme and Rochas Macassar.
Dang, Livejazz got Derby. Can't top that.
1984 was a truly stinky, strong year which gave us
Chanel Coco, Dunhill Edition, Paloma Picasso, Aramis Tuscany, Versace l'Homme, and reigning champs
Ysatis and Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men.
Subtlety was apparently not in vogue.
Antaeus by Chanel (1981)
1964. YSL's Y. Gorgeous. I mention the birth year bit in my review.
I've got jules and patou pour homme.
nice.
1986:
Givenchy Xeryus
Davidoff Zino
Calvin Klein Obsession for men
I'm another 1971 baby. The only one listed here that I've smelled is Chanel No. 19, though I've been curious about Aromatics Elixir ever since Chandler Burr gave it a really good write-up a while back.
From the year of my birth- 1974
Amazone (Hermes)
Eau de Guerlain
Givenchy Gentleman
Gucci No.1
Cristalle (Chanel)

I've tried Eau de Guerlain and Amazone. I wouldn't mind finding some vintage Givenchy Gentleman.....
Creed Orange Spice is just about the only famous frag that is my age. The others I have never heard of.
Anateus - Chanel
Calvin - Calvin Klein
Eau d'Hardien - Annick Goutal
Kouros - Yves Saint Laurent
Must de Cartier - Cartier
No. 88 - Czech & Speake
Santos - Cartier

Honestly, I wouldn't wear any of these. I'm not a fan of powerhouses and scents that smell a bit dated. LOL. *shrug*
post #31 of 97
1981 - YSL Kouros and Chanel Antaeus

These are the only 2 I've tried and scared the hell out of me.
1982 -

Some fragrances that i don't recognize but the hits are :

Azzaro-Azzaro
Bogart-J.Bogart
Brut 33-Faberge
Parure-Guerlain
Eau Libre-YSL
Chaz-Revlon

Probably some of the best of that year(1975). Haven't tried them, unfortunately.
1992

Angel for Women
Creed Erolfa
Guerlain Heritage
L'Eau D'Issey for Women

big year for women...
1980

Jules, Christian Dior

Eau de Givenchy
Fleur de Fleurs, Nina Ricci
Flora Danica, Royal Copenhagen
Ivorie, Pierre Balmain

A somewhat boring year, nothing special
besides Jules.
I only own Eau de Givenchy, I have owned
FdF.
I have samples of both Jules and Ivorie.
duc you don't consider Patou Pour homme special?

I'm from that year too and those are the only ones I recognize.

The year of Chanel No.19 - if it wasn't for this classic, it would have been a dismal year for fragrance releases. Green floral happens to be one of my favorite genres so this fits right in my wardrobe.

Btw has anyone tried Sikkim by Lancome (1971)?
1986:
Givenchy Xeryus
Davidoff Zino
Calvin Klein Obsession for men
Too bad!
In my year of birth only 7 perfumes were released and all 7 feminines.
Wow, not a great year for frags when I was born. The original Hanae Mori and Estee came out but other than that, it appears to have been a slow year of inexpensive drug store flanker duds. Old Spice Burly, Hai Karate Lime, Pink and Pearls, West by Faberge, etc... :/
post #42 of 97
1973

Acier Aluminum
Aramis 900
Paco Rabanne PH
Jovan Musk for Men

I don't own or wear any of these...

Wow, DF. If you like green florals, I wonder what you'd make of Sikkim. It is a match between a rough green chypre and a huge oriental all in one bottle. (spoiler alert: the chypre wins.) I love it and was very surprised when I wrote a review of it that there's very little mention of it.
Fun thread! LOL! Rogalal was born the year I graduated from high school !
The directory showed that my year (1953) had 19 scents launched- a goodly number were by Bourjois and Prince Matchabelli. Bourjois has a scent listed called GA GA, which I'd love to smell.

The highlights of the year were (in alpha order) :
Detchema (first smelled this about 6 months ago- lovely floral aldehyde
Eau Fraiche- House of Dior. (unsure how this really smells- my sample smelled very off)
Fath de Fath- It's a monster oriental- OK, but not really me. Beautiful bottle, tho.
Jolie Madame (Now that's a great classic- never sniffed until the last year, but now it's one of my faves)
Youth Dew- Sorry to YD's fans but both the name and the scent turns me off, somehow.
1975:

Bogart
Etienne Aigner
L'Eau Trois by Diptyque
Brummel by Antonio Puig
Creed Zeste Mandarine Pamplemousse

I have only tried the Creed so far, but I have a (blind-bought) 1.0 bottle of Bogart on the way. I don't know anything about the others but the Brummel and Etienne Aigner sound interesting.

Own it. This FOG enjoys it most before early morning runs/workouts.

Yves Saint Laurent Kouros
Czech & Speake No. 88
Shiseido Nombre Noir I reaaaaallly want to try this one!
Oscar de la Renta Oscar de la Renta pour Lui Probably the first fragrance I ever owned. My grandfather gave me a half-full splash of this monster back when I was a kid.
For the year I was born: Nothing worth mentioning for men, although there are two classic female perfumes.
If I may depart from the trend slightly, I recently noticed that the birthdate of my favourite Doctor Who villainous race, the Cybermen, happens to coincide with release of Eau Sauvage - 1966. I was born some decades later, but since I favour this fragrance I lately find myself wondering, in very idle moments, how it would have been received on Mondas.

Eau Sauvage - Scent of the Cybermen.
I come from a super-killer scent year. I get to boast of:

The Baron
British Sterling
Gres PH
and Aubepine-Acacia (supposedly)

But the real killers that I claim are the fantastic and not to be topped:
Signoricci (original)
Melograno by SMN
Aramis
and Habit Rouge

I know you are all jealous. Unless you're 1965, like me, baby!
Interesting releases in my year (1972)....The aforementioned Pierre Cardin Pour Homme (have tried and owned a mini); the original Drakkar by Guy Laroche (believe it or not, I was still seeing this scent around in closeout shops on Wabash Street around 1988-89; it was in a matte white bottle then and salespeople had to make clear to the customer that this was NOT Drakkar Noir!); 1000 by Patou, Alliage by Lauder, Diorella by Dior.......great year for the ladies! Even Jovan Musk for the ladies was rolled out that year! The fellas also had English Leather Musk and Tai Winds by Avon....interesting! =)
