Does Chanel Egoiste and Platnum Egoiste smell similar?

I can't find a bottle of Egoiste at my local fragrance store, so I don't know if it has been disntinued in the United States and I can't try it out. Is Platnum Egoiste just a flanker version of Egoiste? Or are both totally different?
Totally different.

They smell nothing alike. Egoiste = good, Platinum Egoiste = not good

Wow, I realli like Platinum so that mean I will really like Egoiste even more. Do you know where I can get a bottle?
I am sure if you hunt it down on the net you will find a bottle. Egoiste is worthy of been in a fragrance hall of legend as its that good. It's flanker though is not bad just not in the same league.

Well I don't know if you will like it more or not - they are competely different.

You can find it online. You can also try some small fragrances shops/kiosks in malls. You can also find it in some major cities - in some department stores and Chanel boutiques. But you don't list your residence, so do not know if you can find it where you live or not.

Egoiste is far better than Platinum.

Platinum is Mehhhh. Yesterday i received a vintage Egoiste and its heavenly!
Totally different.

Nonbasenoters would say that Platinum Egoiste = old man, Egoiste = old eccentric woman

Platinum Egoiste - sharp, dry, masculine, metallic
Egoiste - sweet, warm, too heavy for my taste, something in the line of Opium PH but I admit that I tried it just once.
Totally different.
No. They should have named it Platinum Blah instead of sullying the name Egoiste.
Egoiste is still a current product in the Channel Stores. Call one and they'll ship.
I bought Egoiste blind, and really didn't know what to make of it first time I smelled it. I wasn't sure I actually liked it. But after a few wearings it really did grow on me.

Platinum I've smelled often enough, it's okay but there were other scents in that style that I liked more, e.g Boss Elements and Chopard Heaven, so I've never bought it.

They are the day and the night.

platinum. fresh fougère
Egoiste. sandalwood-oriental
I like Egoïste and Egoïste Platinum but they are different...
Platinum Egoiste is a sort of Eternity meets Cool Water thing. Very bland compared to the original.
Platinum Egoiste is like others have pointed out, a rather synthetic, dry wood scent. Quite pleasant and deceptively regal in it's opening, but blatantly synthetic in way which begins to unravel rather quickly, showing it's true colours. Egoiste on the other hand is a beautifully rich woody oriental, very sweet and unique. It's on my to buy list
post #18 of 48
The first things that came to my mind when I smelled the original Egoiste for the first time were masculine and classy. My gf also thinks it smells unique and sexy. I believe you could buy a bottle of it from Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, or at a Chanel boutique. I'm planning to buy a 1.7 oz bottle from beautyencounter.
You can buy Egoiste directly from Chanel online as well.
I would also recommend Egoiste Concentree - hard to find, but well worth it.
Egoiste Vintage in other hand is easy to find and the price is almost the same as the reformulated regular.

Look out this sealeds:

Vintage has the concentration (eau de toilette) above the Chanel logo.

The vintage juice is far better than the regular. Richer, stronger and denser.

I highly recommend the vintage Egoiste.

Just bought a vintage 1.7 oz 2/3 full bottle of Egoiste on eBay for $20. Seller states that it's from an "estate sale."
They are very different but I do detect a similarity......you can't use one to approximate the other though. I'd compare it to Creed SMW and MI - they have a similar vibe to them (ambergis maybe?) but are quite different.

I'm going against the grain here - I like PE far more than original Egoiste (too sweet for me). I can see why others would like it though.

Oh, congrats. I was following that auction (5usd) for a better price, but you got it faster than me with buy it now.
Also, 20usd is awesome for that quantity(about 1oz remaining)

Congratulations, vintage its very very VERY VEEERY good.

They're both good IMHO.

Platinum Egoiste is fairly shrill and chilly in it's synthetic metallic/floral freshness, but also has a good deal of masculine woody notes like moss, patchouli etc

Egoiste is a much darker warmer scent, comprised mostly of a great mix of three key ingredients: Rose, Sandalwood, and vanilla.

Very well put, both have their place in my heart.

I think they're both very different from each other. I dont own the PE, but I do like it very much as a scent. I do own Egoiste and like it very much as well, although CMPC I like better (but I know you dind't ask about that scent and you'll get the same reactions of Pour Monsieur vs. Pour Monsieur Concentree as you would with Egoiste and Egoiste Platinum. lol). I'm not entirely sure that I myself would go out of my way to find a 'vintage' bottle of Egoiste , but never say never.

I have a feeling if PE was not named anything similar to Egoiste, it would not get the negative remarks it does on this board. I'm no fragranista, but to me Egoiste has a rosewood/sandalwood/vanilla ish vibe to it, which you may or may not like. Dont' feel bad if it's not your cup of tea! Blaze your own trail.

Thanks! I have a decant of Egoiste from theperfumedcourt, which I don't find rich or thick at all (I suppose it's the reformulated version) -- but I love it and it lasts 8+ hours on my skin. So, I'd be amazed if the vintage juice is even better!

So the vintage Egoiste is better than the current Egoiste? What did Chanel take out of the vintage? Cost savings? Why?
Egoiste is what you want. You could probably just order straight from Chanel if there isn't a boutique of theirs where you live.

Don't even bother with the Platinum Egoiste. It needs to be discontinued.
No, they are really different.

I think it's actually more deserving of the Egoiste name than the original, because only a selfish jerk would wear this ( Platinum Jerk or Platinum Asshole would also work as names). I also have to admit that i kinda enjoy this in a perverted way, because it agitates me and i like it when fragrances challenge me like that.

I've asked it before and some say that the vintage and reformulated version smell very similar, while d4N13L (above) says it's richer and longer lasting. I'll let you know what I think when I receive my vintage bottle next week.
got mine today. i don't have any of the new stuff to compare it to, but i am FULLY in love!
egoiste deserves mythic status, pe is "okay" by non bn standards... to me it kind of just smells like... nothing.. well it has a little scent haha. PE pales in comparison
post #38 of 48
Platinum is a word for really good metal, so, they wouldn't but a word for good metal on something that wasn't good would they? So something named platium has to be good. The other one doesn't have a name where Platinum Egoiste has the word platinum, does it? So what's better? Platinum or nothing? Platinum is better, you bozos, geeez.

And I would recommend "Bois des Iles": it's the blueprint that Jacques Polge used when he created Egoiste (or Bois Noir as it was originally called). Bois des Iles was created in 1926 and is part of the "Les Exclusifs" line now. It's brilliant as well: an aldehydes opening with a simular sandalwoody drydown.

I'm not aware of a reformulation. It smells the same to me now as the first bottle I've bought in 1990. But I'm not an expert.
Can anyone confirm if it was ever reformulated?
If it was they did a great job. I could tell the difference when I tried the reformulated Antaeus, but with Egoiste I really can't.

The differences in antaeus is more evident than in egoiste, but still perceptive to me.

For once: thank god for my untrained nose, haha! Egoiste is still as gorgeous to me as it was when it was introduced.
It was horrible to have my first love (Antaeus) ruined somehow. It's still great though: sampled it a while ago, so did a few full wearings and will buy a bottle later this year. It is more wearable now: a bit lighter, so a bit more modern as it was before. But I really loved the big heavy bang the original formulation did, hehe...

And big LOL on Bois des Iles. My reaction was exactly the same! The SA at the Chanel boutique here in town were nice to me when I got in for my 3rd bottle from the line. She asked me which ones I liked as well, so they treated me with several samples of Bois des Iles and 31 Rue Cambon, the ones I said I wanted to buy later on.
Took me a few wearings, but now I'm hooked and going for the 200ml this autum. It's awesome and a great addition to Egoiste. Hope you'll love it too!

The reformulated opens very sharp and kinda cheap smell, while the vintage opens rich, warm and denser.
Cant you feel that differences? You have both to try hand by hand?

I noticed that right away when I tried Antaeus again after a break of many years.
I found it much fresher and lighter at start and less warm end deep in the middle and base as well.
Less loud and in your face as it used to be. Still one of the best things I've come across though.
But I definitely preferred the 'powerhouse' version...
As many have mentioned, they do not smell alike. I have both and like both. But i would imagine that Egoiste is easier to "like", so to speak, by most people. I guess for first timers - go for egoiste and subsequently explore vintage PE...
I can't believe Chanel has two scents along the same line of name and that smell TOTALLY different.

Try Fragrancenet, they have it back in stock and the coupon code tspecp20 seems to be working again to get 20% off your purchase.
