Why is the Basenotes website so slow now?
Honestly I'm getting about the same speed I always did, except I'm not getting "server busy" messages.

When you factor those things in it's probably working even faster than before. :P
post #3 of 387
Threads do load up a tad slower for me... so yeah you're not alone.
One reason could be that threads are loading up 3x as many posts per page as they used to (60 posts instead of 20), at least for me. Was that to give us the impression that the combined SotD thread isn't so long to page through now?

Right from the time I registered I've set my default thread cut-off at 100 posts per page... so I don't think that's the problem, well atleast I'm not getting the "Server is too busy" message.. so the wait as the threads load is worth it
post #6 of 387
It takes at least two minutes for any page to load for me...sometimes it doesn't work at all.
Running really slow here at the moment. Trying to sort it out now

Cheers
It's 4.53 pm CA time and it's running pretty fast . Actually I hadn't noticed any slowness.
Thanks Grant.
Good to go here too
Turns out it was a local issue. I worked out that there's a glitch with our UK ad people, and I've switched their ads off.
Anyone else having severe slow loading at basenotes? takes 20 sec. sometimes for a single page..
Yes, very slow here.
I am getting slow loading as well as frequent "Database Error" results. It seems like the database may be becoming very unperformant, perhaps the indexes need to be rebuilt or other performance maintenance tasks need to be carried out. I wonder what DB technology BN uses for a back end?
Slow and I'm on a 32mb line. I.e: pretty fast.
Agonizingly slow for me and getting the database error messages as well.

Not sure why a 3 year old thread was resurrected but ...

There is a thread over in the Community Centre forum with the same complaints. Grant IS aware of the problems.

I am sure why I resurrected the thread.. because if you search.. (with my terms) this is the first post.. so if you don't mind

It was slow for me this morning but it's better now!
I agree, better today.

Considerably - virtually back to normal here.
Been extremely slow loading all week for me.
Considerably faster now this late afternoon (June 14) here on the western side of the American continent.
Very happy camper...thanks to all who helped Grant, and to Grant himself.

Yeah, for me too I'm afraid, here in the sunny West Midlands. Or at least it has been on and off, at any rate. Sometimes it can take 3-4 minutes to even start to open a page and - just now - we got there in ten seconds. But I do love this place, so I persevere!
We've had a lot more visitors lately, and the database was getting overloaded. My hosts have done something, and yesterday we only got 16 database connection errors, compared to the 849 we had the day before! I'm working on something longer term though
post #25 of 387
Pages have loaded considerably faster today, but not as fast as I remember it to be.
I'm finding the PC browsing much better but mobile browsing is painfully slow. Is anyone else having this issue? Not sure if it's BN or my phone. Other sites seem ok though.

I'm finding the exact opposite- my PC browsing is much slower than usual, but my mobile browsing is as fast as ever.

edit. When I think about it, the PC browsing is slow for me in patches. It comes and goes. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.
For me the pages load real fast, but it seems to hang FOREVER right before the page finishes fully loading. IE 8,9
post #29 of 387
Pages don't load with my default ip. But when i change my ip with proxies in usa, pages load without problem.
It's ridiculously slow for me on a PC in a US IP range. Using firefox. Tried with IE and same result.
Incredibly slow for me too. Also, the entire page of posts does not show up on most threads when I open them. It is very frustrating.

There you go..exactly. Inconsistantly normal.

I think this bug has finally been squashed. Pages are actually completing pretty fast now. Excellent.
I haven't been able to get onto the site for three days until now!
Yay, BN's back on track!

Same here. Haven't had access for several days and still having several database errors (Mid-south USA). Just glad BN is up and running again. (Thanks - I was wondering if our 4yr old had been messing in my settings).

Same as FrouFrou, I've been almost totally unable to access BN for a couple of days (but weirdly with rare intermittent moments of access followed by "server unavailable" messages again). The bits I can access again are loading faster than before, which is great. But I can't access any scent database pages at all.

It was Grant who resurrected the thread after 3 years.
Still slow here in Australia
Time to budget for a BNplus membership. God knows I owe it to the community, I've been hangin here for 4+ yrs.

BN finally works again for me after several days I could not load the page at all as well. But sadly I can't acess my wardrobe or post SOTDs either...
After about 20 hours downtime, bn is up again!
we've switched to a different server, will try and sort out teething difficulties x
post #46 of 387
Thanks Grant.

This doesn't seem to work.

Best,
François
It is running fast without problems now.
Grant - it's really fast right now . So much better ! Thanks!

It is much faster, but I can't access the fragrance database at all. Not complaining, just letting you know.

edit: and now that I just posted that I can access the fragrance database but not my own wardrobe, so it seems to me you are working on it. Thank you for all your hard work, I know that maintaining a large forum/database like this one is no easy task.

Seems to be working now, thanks!
I saw some warnings at the top of a page once.
I'm sure you know about this and are all over it, but I'm getting warning messages at the top of database pages, and the SotD buttons don't seem to be working (though the star rating buttons do).

Thanks for working on the issues, and all the replies to this post just go to show how dependent we all are on your incredible hard work! Cheers guys, and hope it's all running smoothly again soon. xxx
post #53 of 387
Hm, I was wondering already why I don't get email notifications for new postings in my subscribed threads anymore. Turns out that the new Basenotes-server is on a 'global AntiSpam list' because it's known to be configured as an open relay (according to GMX.net). It would be great if somebody could look into it sometime.
I got a notice in my email inbox about the most recent posts to this thread and everything is zipping along at top speed today.
Yes, apart from some problems with the fragrance database, it's runnig fast and smooth but still no email-notifications here. It's just a minor problem but I thought it might be good for you guys to know.
I am unable to access reviews or perfume profiles. Since I cannot access the latter, I also cannot post my SOTD or any new reviews. Any suggestions or help that anyone (administrator or otherwise!) might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. I have had no access for 3-4 days now.

Many thanks,
sherapop

And my wardrobe numbers seem to be off again. When adding or deleting, it does not tally correctly in the totals tab at the top.
