Designer fragance that smells like a niche fragrance

Are there a few designer fragrance out there that you think smells like a niche fragrance.... the 2 that comes to mind for me are.... Encre Noire by Lalique and M7 by YSL.... a 3.3 oz bottle of Encre Noire sells for only $42, but it smells like a bottle that cost $200+

A lot of stuff by Guerlain and Caron.

Pheromone for Men by Miglin is one that rarely gets mentioned, in this or any context!

Dior Homme

Antaeus by Chanel. Priced like niche though.

I like YSL Live Jazz here. It seems somewhat unique, quite complex, and feels high quality.

Fahrenheit Absolute

Chanel, Dior, Hermes, Guerlain, Caron, YSL.

Most of what those houses offer is a distinct step above typical designer quality and concept, at very affordable prices.

Midnight In Paris

gucci pour homme - mainstream brand, but quite an unusual scent.
I tried it early on, and was quite taken aback by how different it was to everything else I'd tried that day. Kind of started me out on my perfume voyage. Made me wonder what other smells were out there!

Caron and Guerlain are niche houses, they dont design anything.

Kouros has an impeccable drydown - niche like quality.
Fahrenheit is unique in ways many niche houses would envy for their offerings, and masterfully constructed.

Nicole Farhi Homme... one of my favorites...

Cartier Santos concentrée - for me smells like niche, it blew me away when I tested it, but I don't own it.
Most of Chanel's Les Exclusifs line.

Oooo an oldie but goodie. I haven't worn that in years. Her "M for men" was also nice.
A lot of the Chanel and Guerlain fragrances have that niche kinda edge to them. Dior Homme stands out among most of the other designer fragrances currently offered.

If you ask me, EL's White Linen is borderline avant-garde, like an effort from CdG.

Dior Homme, Chanel Egoiste

CHANEL Egoiste and Hermès Bel Ami.

I could imagine if Creed invented Rive Gauche it would sell as well as GIT.
I fully second Rive Gauche, but also e.g. Caron pour un Homme, Eau Sauvage, Mouchoir de Monsieur, Boucheron pour Homme and many more smell quite close to niche
post #35 of 94
As other have mentioned:

Tiffany For Men
Dior Homme
Encre Noire
M7 (maybe)
Must De Cartier Pour Homme
Safari For Men
Caron Narcisse Noir, Parfum Sacré, Pour un Homme.
Guerlain Mitsouko, L´Heure Bleue
Rochas Tocade, Madame Rochas
Molinrd Habanita
If not designers, then certainly designer prices....

-Cabaret
by Grés
-Bergamotto Marino by Gianfranco Ferré
-1776
Russian Leather by Elsha.

These three smell like they could easily be niche fragrances to me.....

Patou Pour Homme, Etienne Aigner Superfragrance for Men, Pascal Morabito Or Black, and Giorgio Beverly Hills V.I.P. Special Reserve

No way - Insense exemplifies what a good "designer" can be: well balanced, complex and sketchy at once, catching idea well executed, refined. Insense is a work which apparently had lots of time to develop and evolve. Same with Azzaro Pour Homme, great idea plus perfect craftmanship. I don't like it too much, though.

"Niche" has to be more than that to compensate for missing possibilities like broad testing/evaluation, raw materials. Not so good example: Timbuktu. Good idea, but an evaluation would have shown it too sweet, with a lacking balance, all in all a little crude. Better examples: Vierges Et Toreros (ELdO) - new idea executed at least to be bearable, Odeur 53 / 71 by CdG, same.

So a "designer" smelling "niche" would be a bad frag - Missoni (new) or Feu D'Issey or Rush?

Burberry The Beat & Power by 50 Cent are both very unique & different from most designer scents to me. I would include Live Jazz as well.

I'm not sure what you mean here. I've named a few b/c I think there are many scents that have a "niche" quality about them. Just my observation.

M7 - totally off the beaten path of typical designer fragrances. It offers a daring and unique option for the evening, yet it is very classy.
Carven Homme - high quality fragrance with complexity and development. This could have been a niche oriental.
Paco Rabanne Extreme - I like the development in this one and the notes smell natural and high quality (which I associate with niche perfumery)
Cacharel Nemo - I'll admit that I've only worn this a few times but it is also a stark departure from the mundane, designer offerings that it suggests a lack of aspiration for mass appeal, like most niche perfumes.

FYI, I've started a thread over on the female board if you have any suggestions for good "niche-y" designer scents aimed toward women.

I could see Cartier Roadster in this category as well. To me it is a very different & unique take on a natural, herbal mint note. (The mint mixed with the patchouli always reminds me of wet concrete or a block basement. Very unique & non-mainstream).

Now thats a very good frag. Very unique and overlooked round here.
Funny how our perceptions differ. I think Nemo is great but it's a typical example of a designer fragrance to me in that it's well made and pleasant but doesn't really push any boundaries and/or doesn't smell like it contains exceptionally high quality ingredients.
I want to revive this topic. Is your taste changing with age?

For me Narciso Rodriguez Musc Collection EDP and Encre Noire.
Designer that smells niche;

Everything from Comme des Garcons and Costume National (though they're considered niche by many, they are in fact designer brands).

I'll echo in with M7, Egoiste, and Midnight in Paris as well.

Also, many offerings from Tom Ford and Etro are about as "nichey" smelling as you can get from modern designers.

Wouldn't that technically be considered niche? I thought Scent Story only made fragrances.
I'll repeat several that have already been mentioned (and remind everyone that historically, many designer fragrances have been as daring, if not more, than a whole host of niche offerings):

Dior Fahrenheit
Dior Homme
Dior Eau Sauvage
Chanel Egoiste
Bvlgari Black
Yves Saint-Laurent M7

Scentstory 24 Gold.

John Varvatos 10th Anniversary

I think Zirh Ikon smells like a good incense neche fragrance. And it costs only pennies per ml.
Definitely Narciso Rodriguez For Him
