Hey everyone, so I've got a dilemma. I'm looking to add 2 new colognes to my collection in the next 2 weeks, but I have many choices and I'm an indecisive guy. I've already chosen Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'Homme as my first choice, I smelt it and I needed to have it. It will be my "date night"/special occasion cologne. Now comes the hard part. I have 5 possible choices, but only enough $ for 1 more. The choices are:

-Dior Homme
-Dior Eau Sauvage
-Chanel Allure Homme
-Cartier Eau De Cartier Concentree
-Carolina Herrera 212 Men

To give you an idea of what I'm looking for in a fragrance, first let me say I'm a 19 year old college student and I'm looking for something that is versatile (can be worn throughout the seasons, day or night, formal or casual), but is high quality and unique.

So, which one do you think I should get based on overall quality & longevity of the scent, AND that fits what im looking for? Thanks Everyone!

Dior Homme gets my vote.

The two Diors are my tops from your list. Eau Sauvage wins by a slim margin.

Dior Homme... we are basenoters for a reason xD

Which one would y'all say is the WORST. Like I shouldn't even think about?

I wouldn't want to make that judgement. Somebody loves each of them...and you have an interest in all obviously.
It's your nose that counts in the end. What feels best on you and makes you feel good.

But casting an overall vote, I throw in with Dior Homme. A modern classic.

The classic Eau Savage an interesting option on your list, but I think at 19 you have to make your choices count, and Dior Homme might be the best on the list for longevity.

Dior Homme gets my vote from this list.

Dior Homme

Dior Homme fits "unique" but you should sample it first, you might hate it. I haven't tried all the choices though.

Dior Eau Sauvage

Dior Homme is the best scent on your list imo, but probably not the most versatile. So, my vote went to Chanel Allure for versatility (or even better, Allure Homme Sport), or 212 Men which is also very good. The only one on your list I wouldn't recommend is Eau de Cartier Concentree. It's nice, but perhaps a little too green and "bitter". I think the original Eau de Cartier is much better, and much more versatile.

Dior Homme.

Are there any Basenoters who think it SHOULDN'T be Dior Homme???

Dior Homme for sure...
They're really all strong choices but i agree, you picked the best in Dior Homme
post #18 of 36
I would also say Dior Homme but if you already choosed La Nuit as your special/date fragrance there is no point in owning both unless you are fragrance collector.

Allure Homme has also similiar vibe. I never smelled Cartier or Eau Sauvage so my pick would be 212 Men which is completely different than La Nuit and very versatile too.
In my opinion Dior Homme is better constructed and is the best of your list. IMHO, the worst is the 212 Men, it is far too linear and not unique.
I've been wearing Dior Homme Intense all day now and enjoying it immensely throughout, so I have to lump in with the smelly masses here and root for Dior Homme. If you're like us die-hards you may yet end up buying the whole list eventually anyway, but this one is pretty failsafe.

I absolutely adore Dior Homme. What a beautiful fragrance it is!

None of them are bad.
However, I'd drop 212 from consideration.

I recommend Eau Sauvage, though it's lasting power is limited. It isn't a classic for nothing, however.

Allure Homme is my next choice. Great lasting power, but perhaps not quite so well blended as Eau Sauvage.

In my opinion, Eau Sauvage, closely followed by Allure

Good point. If you have a "night" fragrance, go for a day one. Eau Sauvage is brilliant as an everyday scent, as well as Allure Homme. Dior Homme is lovely, but no point having two sort of warm/romantic vibe scents if you have limited budget.

Assuming you live in Bryan, TX - there are only a couple of months per year that would be comfortable wearing Dior Homme out of doors (just my opinion, of course).

I voted for Eau Sauvage

Dior Homme would definitely get my vote, but it isn't very versatile IMO which was one of the things OP was looking for.

Eau Sauvage.

Reason: I would say Dior Homme, as I love it. But I think it fits the same niche as La Nuit in a small wardrobe: you'd have two sweet, "romantic" scents. Eau Sauvage would give you variety and versatility, and it's a better fresh scent than Eau de Cartier Concentree or 212.
I'm very fond of Dior Homme, but Eau Sauvage is still one of the best-selling eau de colognes in France for a reason.
Eau Sauvage is very versatile and great as an everyday scent, but is still unique...

Hope you don't mind someone from the women's side chiming in, but I do wear (and love wearing!) a number of men's fragrances, and my vote also goes to Dior Homme; but to Pamplemousse and LiveJazz's point, if you've already got a romantic, slightly sweet fragrance like La Nuit, and to Matthew's point about the heat (though if sprayed sparingly, I'd wear Dior Homme any time, even in Texas), you may want to go with Eau Sauvage. Maybe a FB (full bottle) of Eau Sauvage and ask for a few samples vials or a mini of Dior Homme to tide you over?
