What types are those fragrances? (Chype, Fougere...)?

I'm trying to determine the difference between the types of fragrances and would like to identify some of the ones that I already own in order to help me.

Burberry London for Men
Chanel Egoiste Platinum
Bulgrai Pour Homme Aqua
Drakkar Noir
Dvidoff Cool Water
Armani Aqua Di Gio
Versache Blue Jeans

What about these also:

Aramis Havana
YVS l'Homme
Chanel Allure Homme Sport - citrus, right?
Hermes Terre D'Hermes


Apart from identifying those frags for me. Can you explain in SIMPLE TERMS the difference between Chypre, Fougere and Oriental. I've read the notes on these types onlnie, but that hasn't helped me too much thus far.

Have you seen The H&R Geneology for masculine fragrances? I found it quite interesting. I searched it, found my favorites and along with researching the opinions here in the reviews area and in the directory area I was able to get better feel for the fougere / chypre / oriental categorizations.

Nik - either you're a lazy typist or you've been buying copy perfumes - please exercise care.


Oriental: Refreshed by aromatic or citrus facets, oriental compositions draw their richness and sophistication from precious substances such as amber, resin, tobacco, spices, exotic woods and animal notes.

Chypre: Chypre by Coty enjoyed such success in 1917 that "chypre" is now a generic name for a whole category of timeless, classic perfumes. The compositions are based on oak moss, ciste-labdanum, patchouli and bergamot accords. The richness of chypre notes mixes wonderfully with fruity or floral notes. This family is made up of distinguished, instantly recognizable fragrances.

Fougeres are typically a sub-group of either Orientals or Aromatics, and in each case follow that note, with an accord characterised by lavender, woody, coumarin, geranium and oak moss notes.

Dr. Rudi's list is accurate, but let me group them at a higher level using the terms you wondered about:

Burberry London for Men - oriental
Chanel Egoiste Platinum - aromatic fougere
Bulgrai Pour Homme Aqua - aquatic fougere
Drakkar Noir - aromatic fougere
Dvidoff Cool Water - aquatic fougere
Armani Aqua Di Gio - aquatic
Versache Blue Jeans - ??? baby powder...

What about these also:

Aramis Havana - spicy fougere
YVS l'Homme - sweet fougere
Chanel Allure Homme Sport - sweet aquatic
Hermes Terre D'Hermes - citrus mineral spicy woody cyphre...sorry, this one is a little hard to pin down!


If you want to check out the cyphre category in more detail, try Dior Eau Sauvage, Chanel Pour Monsieur, or Midnight in Paris for something newer and sweeter.
