Knize Ten for a young lad like me?

Thread Starter
I'm early twenties but I was wondering if Knize Ten was a fragrance for a young twenty something as myself. I'm a fan of James Dean and know he wore this and am curious to see if the fragrance to many was too, dare I say it, old smelling?

If you like it, wear it.

I think it would smell "old" to the younger crowd, so you should buy a sample or decant first, IMO (assuming you care about what they think).

You are not allowed to wear K10 until you are 35.
Sorry.
Until then it will smell bad. Then it will smell amazing.

Anyone under 35 who currently owns a bottle should send it to me immediately.

Yeah, just try a sample first. I like Kouros and it smells very modern to me, even though it's an old scent. I'm 17 and haven't gotten any "ew old man" replies from it yet. I also tested Guerlain's Vetiver which was also supposedly an old man scent, and found nothing of the sort.

I think everyone on this forum is tiring of all my kouros posts :P

Others have already answered the main point.

However, as with all perfumes, you should smell it first. The dominant note is a strong leather, and, regardless of whether it's young or old, not everybody likes leather. It's elegant and butch at the same time.

You gotta smell the fragrance man, and then decide.

Its not an easy fragrance. Its not a fragrance for "da klub". Its not something young men/women will like today upon first sniff. But you have to give it a chance. The Knize Ten has the reputation for being a great fragrance for a reason.

I've tried it and decided it was not for me. But its an interesting fragrance. And I'm sure many Basenoters remember 2 and a half years ago when it was not uncommon for The Knize Ten to be commonly mentioned on the boards ( Damn, where is the "blue wink man" when you need it ?!)

Indeed. It's leathery and kind of dark.

I discovered Knize Ten when I was in my mid-twenties (back in the early '80s), and used to wear both it and Knize Two frequently. Both were then among my favorite fragrances.

I've always been very independent and never cared about blending in or following my peers. I also didn't mind presenting myself as being mature vs. still being a kid. And back then there wasn't the divide between "old man" fragrances and "youthful" frangrances. All that came later, in the '90s. In the '80s fragrances were just fragrances, and about the only things available anyway were what are now considered "old man" fragrances.

IMO young people today tend to cling to their youth rather than grow up, and that includes which fragrances they wear. There also seems to be more peer pressure now to conform to a particular group than there used to be, and group members are very critical of those who wish to be different.

So I would say wear it if you are comfortable with it, and don't wear it if you are not. I never cared if others liked my fragrances or not. I wore them, and still wear them, because I like them.

Knize Ten is a beautiful, classic, elegant, manly fragrance. It would be a shame to deprive yourself of wearing such a wonderful fragrance because of peer pressure or insecurity, but if you not comfortable with it find something else more suitable. You have to decide this for yourself.

BTW, both Knize Ten and Knize Two, while still recognizable, have changed considerably since the early '80s.

Another idea is Gomma by Etro, which is lighter and not nearly as strong at first.

Well, if you're thekindd of young lad who can wear Kouros, you can probably wear Knize Ten too.

It is distinct, and not like many other scents that guys your age would wear though.

If you like it, just as fellow Basenoters said, wear it

I was myself only a few years older when I got my first bottle of Knize Ten

The right word for old smelling is usually "character". Something that most fragrances since the early 1990's don't have any of.

Unfortunately true.

Quite true, sadly.

'Still recognizable' sounds a bit harsh to me and does not correspond to my own evaluation, but maybe my oldest bottle is not pre-80's. I would encourage younger men who never used Knize Ten to try it on their arm as soon as they get the chance. It's as keen as Kouros and thus even better suited for the young and bold. Too bad I don't belong to that group any longer, but it's way too late to change my habits now ;-).

Kevin (over at NST) is one of my favorite reviewers. He does not seem to weigh the modifications he noticed 'in the past ten years' as all that heavy.

Turin published his own review of Knize Ten in the 2nd edition of PTG. I do not have the book at hand right now, but I am sure if Turin/Sanchez had found the character of K10 seriously endangered by reformulation they would not have given it five stars.

I say go for it!
Re: Turin, yes, they still rave about it. I have not smelled the pre-80s version, but I think elsewhere they claim that the new version is a little more fruity than the old. It still has a lot of character to me. Let's see if they say something else in their forthcoming new book on their 5 stars, where they are supposed to have resampled most of the 5 stars.

I guess I just don't get K10. Smelled like a floral-scented face powder to me.

And I love all sorts of 'challenging' frags.
My all time favourite. Sample it first, is my suggestion!

Anybody that picks up Knize Ten is a bad motherf*cker and can where whatever the hell they want! DO IT!
Not a fan of it myself. Floral, carnationy leather... very dated and of its time. While I'm of the opinion where what you want, when you want... my own personal feeling would be why not try for something with a bit more modern of a take like SMN Nostalgia?
