Royal Oud

Thread Starter
Hallo!

Had a chance to sniff Creed's RO today. Is anyone else under the impression that this is a rip-off?
To me it smells 90% like CdG Ouarzazate - or have I gone crazy ?
It's all relative. To me it 'reeked' of Lorenzo Villoresi's Spezie!
I have it and it doesn't smell like anything else I have.

I don't have it (yet) but I agree - not like anything that I have. Although I haven't sniffed Ouarzazate or Spezie - must give them a try.
They are all close to something...that being said I own it and really cannot say I own or have tried anything like it. I find it really smooth.

Gotta retry Quarzarzate and Spezie.
To my nose, it seemed a combo of these:

40% Marc Jacobs Bang
25% Eav Des Bavx
10% old school 80's woody scent
10% Creed Spice and Wood
5% Lutens Gingembre
5% Tam Dao
5% light Aoud fragrance

I really like Eav Des Bavx, Spice and Wood, Gingembre & Tam Dao and I do appreciate a light hand when it comes to oud.

I've never tried Bang.

Hmmm. Now I'm looking forward to testing Royal Oud....
I like it a lot...a very well made fragrance of clove, cinnamon, cardamom and oud and some other spices I may be missing on this first impression. Some vanilla on the drydown. This one certainly has more spice notes than S & W.
No. But on the same token, I haven't smelled the one you mentioned. This will be a workhorse scent for come fall. It's very nice.
I'm not all that familiar with Royal Oud, but with all due respect, I have my doubts that they would ripoff one the more obscure CdG scents. But it may well smell quite similar to your nose.
I have tested Royal Oud three times now and I have to say I like it - not crazy about it, but I think it is a fine fragrance that nobody will despise. I recommend it if you want a very nice, non offensive, masculine statement of oud, spice, warmth, woods and leather. I like Creed's use of vetiver in the base to give that raw green finish to the leathery aspects of the oud. It is not a bold oud, and is not an unusually bold fragrance at all and it has no relationship to any of the rose/saffron/ouds that are are on the market. This is a masculine leather oud that covers a lot of bases. I see it as a combination of elements from Killian's Pure Oud (style of oud), Harrod's Oud (the basenote) and Tabarome Millisime (opening notes).
Probably the best breakdown of RO on basenotes

This fragrance sort of reminded me of TF tobacco vanille... but not as good imo. However, I really enjoyed it. A 15 ml decant should hit the spot!
Like anything, you either like it or you don't like it. If you like it, you need to make your own decision as to whether it's 'worth it'. Most places that sell it will have a tester, so you can try before you buy. On this basis, I don't see how you could term any scent a 'rip off'...
I personally like Royal OUD very much, good for an evening out in cooler weather, definitely a classy scent and I get very good longevity out of it.
This is one of the few Creed scents that I find appealing, yet there are so many scents I would prefer over it. So for me it is not worth the price. It is very well done though, and I can see many people wanting it, buying it and enjoying it.
This one surprised me as well, I really liked it of the first sniff (and I generally don't like Oud perfumes). Its just way too expensive for me to justify.
Smells good and robust temporarily but sadly it falls off quick on me.
Nice scent but definitely not worth buying to me.

really, that's interesting. this is a projection monster on me, receiving compliments from two different women the first time sampling it with only two sprays on my hand. Both of them were at a relatively far distance as well.
Longevity for this one on me is in the 10 hour range. I'll have to ask my friends about the projection.
M7 is significantly better for a fraction of the cost.
Why all this jabber about the cost? Why can`t we just estimate the fragrance from how it smells? It`s always the same prep when it comes to Creed-fragrances..

Because value is important to people. A Honda Accord is a nice car for $25,000. If they doubled the price to $50,000, no one would buy it.

Royal Oud is a good scent. However, why should I pay $300 for it when I have two other "oud" scents (M7, Fahrenheit Absolute) that smell better & last longer for 1/4th of the price?

If you like RO, then wear it and enjoy it, but everyone ultimately has their limits on what they're willing to pay. Especially when you consider that in a year or two chances are that it will either be sold, or just another scent in your collection.
The cost vs. quality analysis varies from one person to another. One of the obvious variables is income available for non-essential expenditures. Another is personal taste. Given this, if someone thinks Fahrenheit Absolute is a better option than Royal Oud, then so be it.

In my own experience, M7 doesn't smell better and certainly doesn't last longer than RO. I can't speak to FA, since I haven't tried it.

This.

I know many are hurting in this economy with all the tremors being felt in the US and Europe, but its all subjective really. Its not just Creed - Guerlain, Chanel, etc and all the big names have their budget busting $800+ offerings which may or may not (in most cases, "not") resonate with the hardcore fanbase. If someone finds a lower cost alternative which is more pleasing to their nose, good for them. But there are ways to enjoy a higher priced fragrance without splurging for a full flacon at retail.
I liked this one. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Meh - nothing that great and certainly not worth the price IMO.

i think Royal Oud smells 300% better than either of those, and more than justifies the asking price. i'm consistently surprised by it, and am loving it now that the temps are dropping...

do you know if there are any plans for flacons of Royal Oud?

Well, I can only speak for myself. To me, it doesn't smell like a $300 scent. It's very nice, but I'm not excited enough by it to pay those prices. There are several scents which I have fond worthy of such a high price however and have gladly paid. It's obviously a very personal thing.

Just realized now this is totally off-topic, didn't read the fine print Have nothing ill to say about Creed, yet...............but anyway:
I just have to say Montales line of Oudh's has gotten pretty silly. How many are there? Rose and oudh and some stuff inbetween... Not that I wish there were fewer, to each his own...Though jesus I've tried like 5 of them, several wears each, they were all nice enough but didn't leave much of an impression.... Most didn't smell very in-your-face in any real way you'd (I'd) expect given the names, and I tried to pick the most provocative ones.... Basically only Cuir d'Arabie left me a bit stunned.
Just had to rant, cause I'm a poor bastard. ; D

Royal Oud or . . . Royal Doud!

A fine masculine. Not worth the price, but I am sure they will sell tons of bottles of Royal Doud this Christmas.
I tried it a few days ago at Nieman Marcus. After spraying a card I was impressed so I sprayed 5 nice sprays on my arms. I thought it was a wonderful scent that stayed very close to the skin. I could still smell it 6 hrs. later but only when bringing my arm up. I would probably have bought it that day except for the $300 price for small bottle. In my mind it is a very fine $80 bottle of fragrance.
Presumably you are solely referring to the top notes or are you saying that Ouarzazate also develops into that wonderful ambergris drydown?
Finally tried it today. Underwhelming. Decent, but nothing paricularly interesting and on the drydown it veers into David Beckham territory. For something of this order, it used to suffice to get Old Spice - nice, no-nonsense cologne for a couple of bucks, you know.

I agree I think it's Creed just jumping onto the popular Oud bandwagon by producing something that they can stick a label on and what better than "Royal Oud".lol...... Their marketing dept has not half got some cheek, I bet Oliver and his son whipped that concoction up over a weekend of golf.lol
post #40 of 47
I think it a very nice fragrance but just can't justify the price.
I like the fact that it's a very spicy oud, which totally works for me. But it has that 'Creed note' running through it that sort of annoys me. And, oh yeah, it ain't cheap.
I like it, but thankfully, it's very strong for me, and I barely need to spray any to be happy all day, so it works out. And I agree - spicy and not too oudy got me into the oud camp.
I'm crazy about it. Love it. So glad it's in my collection. My advice: buy it. It's so fine, you can almost anticipate a weak reformulation coming. Buy now while it's still magnificent.
I enjoy it but I think DULLAH nailed it.
It's decent, nothing special. Probably should be called Royal Spice.

I hear you, mcg - totally.. That oudy accord is JUST pushing the edge of too strong relative to the rest of the composition - and then it dies down and unveils everything else - which is something I REALLY love about the development. It could easily be weakened, but I think that it would definitely lose some character. Not enough to ruin it, but enough to notice.

Totally agree, is a decent spicy fragrance, the oud I think is just in the title...
