Invasion Barbare - Page 2

Would this make a good summer scent?
Works fine year round. But if you are looking for something particular fresh or refreshing, this is not it.

Ive never smelt anything similar. Very unique, pleasant scent. It is in my top 3 now.

I find it rather refreshing with that ginger and cardamom.

I'd love to see PersianPrince come back and update this thread. Reading through it again, it looks like he actually bought a bottle of IB blind! But I don't know if he ever posted his thought on it after receiving it.

So, if you're reading this, Persianprince, please let us know how everything worked out!

No question: the single very best scent I've ever come across. I don't think I'm snobbish just because of the MDCI name: I don't understand Chypre Palatin, washed it off - period. Ambre Topkapi - I can see people loving it, but surely not me. But IB - it is out of this world. If I'll never smell other scent than this one and APOM Homme, I won't regret it.

I have 85ml of this stuff if anyone is interested!

It's funny reading this now, my girlfriend said I smell like "Apple Jacks" when I wore it over the weekend (not the first time I wore it around her). She loves it though, it's a win/win for me. I love the juice.

I have a sample, along with other MDCI's, coming from Lucky Scent in the mail shortly, you guys are killing my patience :P

Not sure if anyone has seen this video..

I really REALLY hope I don't get the band-aid smell they got.

You never can tell. Some say Puredistance M is the greatest thing since the sliced bread, yet I found it so food-spice-like that I had simply no idea how others don't smell it Go after your own nose (and worship IB )

Puredistance M was just entirely too much for me. Maybe it was the the sprayer on the 2.5ml decant I have and it just put out way too much. Next time I am feeling ballsy enough to wear it, I'll be dabbing. One does not have to be remotely close to as cautious when applying IB.

This is good advice for me as I have samples of each on the way.

I picked mine up from The Perfumed Court. The sprayer on those 2.5ml bottles pack a punch. Definitely way too strong for Puredistance M. I'd HIGHLY recommend treading lightly once you receive it, especially if you opted for a spray sample. That stuff is extremely potent (it is extrait, that's for sure!)

I can remember a scent which has a kind of similar character - Jean Pascal's Quimbaya. I never could warm up to it, perhaps it was too sharp where IB is mellow, perhaps it was too near to Fahrenheit - I don't know. But that name came first to my mind when this morning I dabbed my new IB sample.

I had Quimbaya about 4 years ago. I liked it OK.

You'll find comments/reviews connecting IB to Fahrenheit. According to my previous post, in my view the connection is more apt to Quimbaya, though Fahrenheit is not far-fetched either. I'm curious if you'll find the similarities.
Nevertheless IB is a much superior scent.

I seem to be about the only person that doesn't like Invasion Barbare. Maybe my sample from TPC was corrupted or something.

Probably not. Given your top 10, I'm not surprised IB wasn't up your alley.
A legitimately great fragrance. Looking forward to more from this perfumer, Stéphanie Bakouche Kouidri - protege of Jean Kerleo (Patou pour Homme, etc)
I really like Invasion Barbare, but I honestly don't see why it's priced so high. If I'm to pay $375 for 60ml, I want to be knocked off my feet in amazement.

I get really nice grapefruit & violet notes out of this, but I don't see what sets this apart from other great niche frags, such as Creed.
Folks,
Would somebody please take md outta my dilemma?
I have common interest on all basenotes
Highly hailed and talked about scents,
the likes of LADDM, Rose 31, GIT, Homage, Terre de hermez, Guerlain vetiver.
I blind bought most of them and was never dissappointed and I had
tha WOW moment.
But for IB, I really dont get it!
And given the too much praise for IB, I was expecting an instant love!

e.g me and Volley2 have very similar interests (in my observation)
But i do not get it for this one,

Would somebody shed some light on this?

Pretty simple. What is one persons Filet Mignon is another persons McDonalds Hamburger.

I own and like IB, and think it is a very nice fragrance, but to be honest, could easily live without it.

I think Claude mentioned somewhere that you can get a 100mL aluminum spray bottle from them with a sample label for like €160. I'd have to look again, but it is at least cheaper than the more expensive bottles and you get more juice.

Bo'3naim, I had the exact response whn I tried it.

A huge HUH on my face.

Quality ingredients and masterful blend , but so it's too conservative and restrained.

I know from your taste that you expect more from a perfume.

I find Sartorial very similar to it and better. It's possesses the 'oomph' you're looking for.

Lastly, it was hyped. Between IB and Sarotial, sartorial was more deserving of a hype if one were to be enforced.

That said, I'll definitely be getting a bottle of IB. I enjoy the genre amd will fit IB into the rotation.
Interesting. I thought Rose 31, LDDM, and honestly LDDM were all okay. I ended up giving away LDDM, swapping Rose 31, and now trying to swap GIT, but I would NEVER swap IB unless it was for a flacon of Jardin d' Amalfi or 100ml of M.

Same with u, I could live without it.
But I can never go without mitsoku or Shalimar.

I guess it is time for me to try Sartorial, especially the price is very good for a quality house
Although most penhalligons are weak, but i really enjoy them

Well, this is a perfect example that people vary in taste.
But for Jardin d'Amalfi: this is really amazing stuff
For the last 3 years or so, it is my best discovery
Although it is flagged as Femme, but well suited for man

Sartorial projects like a Xerjoff.

I bought an aluminium bottle of IB straight from MDCI after getting the sample set. At 100ml, it is more bang for your buck than the tassel bottle. Bar none the best "male" targeted scent in the line in terms of smell, longevity and projection. When I initially wore I was somewhat worried that it had an "old school" vibe from the Lavender overload, but got was pleasantly surprised when I got quite a few positive comments from ladies in the office and the girlfriend.

Looking forward to trying Puredistance M, thanks to Palmbeach for hosting the split!

I also enjoyed Un Coeur En Mai. Chypre Palatin was great in the top & mid but it dried down to a "meh" quiet amber.

^Concur. Same as the 60ml tassel (EUR180 + shipping). You get a sample set if you didn't buy it initially. You should check with Claude from MDCI whether he still has any 100ml bottles.

Am I the only one who doesn't like this fragrance? I've dabbed from my sample on multiple occassions and tried to like but I just don't, despite the luxury feel of it. Smells too much medicinal lavender / bandaid to me and it's quite strong.

This review thinks exactly the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uJk01xvmD8

Damn you basenotes had to see what the hype was about and now my wallet will suffer once again, this stuff is absolutely great.

Is LuckyScent the only place this stuff is available?

Now I have interest in trying Santorial too as well, argh

Yeah, I have Sartorial on the way. My samples should be here tomorrow. Kinda hope I hate them! I could go broke.

Hey BB, I actually bought a 10ml decant and was very impressed. I was considering a bottle at the time, but continued sampling and to be honest have not had a chane to revisit it to see if its something I want to get a bottle of. It's quality juice and unique, but i wish it had a bit more power...but i can't complain i did get a good 7-8hrs from it.

I'm interested in trying Santorial since it's suppose to be very similiar and much cheaper.

Good to see you report back!

My bottle of IB projects and lasts an insane amount, so I've never had that problem. I recently received a nice sample of Sartorial from Parfum1 so I'll have to give it another test. I remember thinking it was good, but not great. But that was a looong time ago.

Anyway, thanks for the update. As you can see, I was wondering how it worked out for you!

let me know what you think about Sartorial. I need to try to get my hands on a small decant of IB again to retest it. It's been a while since i've sniffed it.

This review thinks exactly the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uJk01xvmD8

I don't like it much either. I couldn't get through that review - they take a loooong time to say not very much. They could have done that in 30 sec by just saying that it smells like lavender and bandaids, and they don't like the smell of bandaids. Done.

I tried IB a few times. It's been a while, but I remember it as basically an attempt at a modernized fougere with some parts stripped out and replaced with unusual synthetic notes. That's not a bad thing per se - I like Sartorial you could also describe that way - but overall IB doesn't gel as a seamless composition.

A classic fougere smells like a fougere because all of the pieces merge together to create that effect. IB smells like a jumble of notes that never coalesce into anything.

I think IB was a more ambitious composition that Sartorial. It seems the intent was to break the fougere mold and reinvent the genre. The thing is - the fougere is one of those timeless magical accords that is greater than the sum of its parts. That's why its been around forever. IB doesn't feel like a fougere, and its not a new timeless accord either - it's just a jumble of high quality parts.

IMO, of course. I know many people with better noses than I that love it. I just think they are wrong when it comes to this one.

I wore this twice this week just because this post popped up man it's good stuff still in my top 3 I think. It just makes a wonderful aura of fragrance around you, manly, gorgeous but not annoying or over the top and works in Winter and Summer for me. It was 85-88F here past week and it was amazing both times. I am starting to get a dent in the bottle !

Worked really well with 1 extra spray to my shirt kept it around all day, not that it's weak but I love the top and drydown on it.
Invasion Barbare got my sample today, This is nice!!! DAMN!

Plan on wearing mine tomorrow, I'm giving it every chance to impress me...we'll see.

It starts really good but then turns in to this tomato marinara sauce type of smell without the herbs in it.
Not a fan at all. There are much better fragrances out there for half the price. Thats my personal opinion.

I am a fan of Pen's Sartorial, and I have seen the comparisons to IB and HdP 1725 so I ordered samples of both of those (among others) from LuckyScent last week. I wore 1725 once this weekend, and IB today to work. I prefer Sartorial to both of them. It has some other complexities going on that I like, even though I occasionally get a whiff that makes me feel like I'm wearing Brut when I have it on. Between IB and 1725, I definitely think IB is better. They're both softer than Sartorial (kinda powdery?). 1725 is really soft with lots of lavender. IB is like a mix of Sartorial and 1725 to my nose. Given the prices of Sartorial and IB, I'm really glad I prefer Sartorial.

Brilliant nugere. No-go for me because for 99% of people out there, it just smells like another old $15 fougere .

Yes, I get a lot of Grey Flannel out of this. Like a summer version. Makes the price hard to justify.
The sample i owned was my signature scent a while back,
Amazing stuff.
Smells like Brut, re-formulated for a Prince.

I am sensitive to some dry woody thing in it though and it gets quite scratchy and irritating in the dry down.
I am enjoying this more today. I used many more "dabs" from my sample. Excellent suit and tie scent. IMHO, it's still not worth $250 for a headless bottle. I'll beggar along with my humble Creeds.
I'd heard all the hype, so purchased one of those 12ml splashes that had been broken out of a sample set.

I generally like things that are sort of different and out there.

This stuff smells pretty conservative and old-fashioned, but oh brother; now I know what everyone is talking about.

Some truly great stuff.

Same here. That's only the only reason it's not quite perfect in my books. Still a great fragrance though, so close to perfection. I wore it for years before I got annoyed with the drydown. The late, late drydown has too much cedar+civet+mystery note? that just goes on and on and gets annoying for me.
