Yatagan = Cocaine?

So I'm showing a good friend of mine some of my favorite fragrances, and coming upon Yatagan, he says that its bitter edge is very, very reminiscent of cocaine's bitter flavor/smell. He really enjoyed it regardless (or in addition!) to that comment.

It made me wonder if the mysterious Vince was doing lines at a disco club in '75, perked his head up from the table and exclaimed "This bolivian sh*t smells just like celery seed and wormwood!" and set out to create the ultimate "stimulating" cologne.

I've never insufflated cocaine. Can anyone else, or perhaps knows some who can, testify to this similarity?
I wouldn't know.
Nor would I.
Nor would I. Many have claimed Tom Ford Tuscan Leather also has a cocaine note. Tuscan Leather doesn't smell like Yatagan (though they are both leathery), but then again I don't know what note I'm looking for here.

Suuuure it was "your friend." That's how it always goes

I laughed really hard at "the mysterious Vince was doing lines at a disco club in '75, perked his head up from the table and exclaimed 'This bolivian sh*t smells just like celery seed and wormwood!'"

But anyway, I wouldn't know. I don't even think I realized cocaine would even have a scent.
I wouldn't know either.

I think your friend was presenting you a snow job

I bought him a bottle of the Yat for his birthday today, so he can enjoy that coke-fresh scent all day, every day, and no annoying come-down!

I wouldnt know. I have not smelled Yatagan LOL

hehe had to look that one up

I'd guess that if your cocaine smells of pine (cleaner) and herbs it is probably not of very good quality.

Haha! Exactly what I was about to write!
I think the real question here is whether the Yatagan in question is vintage or a reformulation.

new version. i keep my vintage 80s juice in a double baggie in the freezer sealed in a 1lb can of coffee
post #16 of 62
I wouldn't know either... but I asked a "friend" of mine and he said it is there and that the bitter herbal smell is similar. He actually has owned Yatagan for a while now and never made the connection until now.
I haven't sniffed Yatagan...

Cocaine is often cut with plain asprin, aka salicylic acid. Salicylates are a common perfume ingredient, so makes sense to me.
never gotten it.

Actually one of the things I really love about Yatagan is that it has no birch tar, a common source of methyl salicylate, and one of my least favorite perfumery ingredients. But maybe other salicylates...?

I've ne'er smelled it,but this made me wonder : what would it be like if they actually used cocaine IN a fragrance?

Probably no effect, since it's not an odorant.

Though I imagine many chemicals have a smell if you snort em directly onto the smell sensors.
it'd be illegal! heh

but in all reality I don't know about processed cocaine but I could see coca leaf having a nice scent in a fragrance to be completely honest

I tasted coca tea once. It was green and similar to mate in flavor -- mild, green, bitter.
I do know that Yatagan is very difficult to chop into neat lines though...
No it doesn't. Tuscan Leather on the hand......

Never tried Yatagan, but I agree that Tuscan Leather has a very noticeable cocaine note.
Maybe someone's cutting his gear with celery salt? Just a thought.
Ylang-ylang though - anything with a predominant note of Ylang-ylang - and I'm back to my twenties, smoking smack off a Kit-Kat wrapper in the bogs of the Bristol 'Old E'.

So I avoid Ylang-ylang - because it's a kinda grisly memory and the smell makes me want to heave...
what a noob

everyone knows Yatagan smells like Afghan Heroin

I admit that I have tried cocaine a few times during my wilder days but to me it smells and tastes absolutely not like Yatagan. It sure is bitter but in a chemical way. It reminded me much more of ammoniac / cat piss. I don't think anyone would seriously say that about Yatagan.
Yatagan does not smell of kerosene!
I'm snorting cocaine as I type this. However, I've never tried Yatagan, so I wouldn't know.

Question: After smelling Yatagan do you get post-nasal drip?

Drunk it in tea form once and also rolled up the dried leaves into a bolus and absorbed it through my cheek once. (My friends were in the peace corps in Bolivia.) Reminded me of tea but smoother and a little more awake.
there was a ZIRH scent that had this fresh, acetone and green banana peel quality not unlike fresh raw oily yola. Personally, I despise cocaine, and have never done it, but was a greedy evil b@stard as a teen, so I have direct scent memories to yola.

The Zirh scent is ZIRH by ZIRH (2001):

Cosign Tuscan Leather having a similar stage it passes thru.

There's a huge difference between cocaine and coca leaves.

YATAGAN is much better, believe me
Cocaine hydrolizes when it is exposed to water vapour in the air resulting in some methyl benzoate which is a common perfume ingredient, perhaps these scents contain a large concentration of this. Drug sniffer dogs are trained to smell methyl benzoate for exactly this reason.
I have a sample of Yatagan coming, so I'll get back to you on that. I sure hope it doesn't smell like cocaine, because I think cocaine smells pretty harsh and putrid.

Probably lost his ability to smell, anyway.
The only cologne I know that smells like coke is obsession, coke cola that is
post #60 of 62
In my personal experience Cocaine doesn't really have a smell. I haven't used cocaine in 15 years so I could be wrong.
