Just blind bought Quorum

I saw a 3.4oz bottle of Quorum at Burlington Coat Factory for $15 and snatched it up like an American bald eagle grubbin' on some unsuspecting salmon. I sprayed some on the back of my left hand and my immediate thought: OLD MAN SMELL NOOOO!!!! It filled my entire car up with the loud, abrasive smell...all that emanating from just 1 spray on the back of my hand. My first ever blind buy yielded me a nice bottle of Versace (not even Versus) Blue Jeans and it turned out to be one of my favorites. I even blind bought Set Sail St. Bartes and was pleasantly surprised. I was on a roll with blind buys and thought I'd give Quorum a try. It's been 30 minutes since I've sprayed it and it's turned into a reminiscent smell of Preferred Stock, which I wore a lot in my Jr. high school days. It smells like Preferred Stock bear hugged Ralph Lauren Polo. Maybe it's just me but I'm not a fan of Quorum. I have a pretty diverse collection, but I'm not sure this one belongs among the ranks (although it is pretty rank). Am I the only one who isn't pleased by this powerhouse? What are your guys thoughts?

You're not alone. I'm not a fan of it either.

I'm not a fan of the new version. With the old version, if you give it time, it gets better and better. However, Aqua di Gio it is not !

It's very green and mean. It's a formidable scent. This may be what Sex Panther smells like.

Absolutely do not judge this one by your initial reaction. The topnotes are very offputting and are that "old man smell" that you were referring to, so immediately sniffing after spraying is going to severely bias your overall reaction to this fragrance. My advice is to spray it, wait an hour and then smell it as it does develop into something very nice and sophisticated. I'm 26 and I also bought it blind and enjoy it quite a bit, although it is a little too mature for me to really wear. Still a nice one to have in the collection for novelty's sake if nothing else

FYI the $15 you saw it for is by no means a steal, that's pretty much what it goes for online and elsewhere (if not even cheaper)

I'd say your spot on with your reaction. It's good stuff if your pushing a hundred.

Sidney, I'm 26 also and now that it's been about an hour it has smoothed out quite a bit. The topnotes were a Popeye punch in the face. But now it's got a green piney and leathery smell similar to Original Polo. It's like the hulk finally calming down and transforming back into the gentleman David Banner. It doesn't smell as old man-ish as it did at first, but certainly has that older cologne smell. I'm going to stick it out for the rest of the night and see how it ends up. This one won't be in heavy rotation but it is nice to have an 80's powerhouse in the collection if even just for sh*ts and giggles.

You're literally going through all the same reactions I had when I first smelled it myself, except I was doing Quorum on one arm and One Man Show on the other (let me tell you, this experience was a doozy, I felt sick to my stomach for the first 10-15 mins). I have found that knowing how this fragrance progresses has allowed me to judge it differently, basically disregarding the initial topnotes and weighing the midnotes and basenotes more heavily. It actually was a few weeks between my first and second trial so I think that had a lot to do with it as well, allowed my brain to reset and to essentially try it for the first time again with that added knowledge.

Either way, I don't think this is one you're going to be wearing with any sort of regularity although hopefully you'll come to appreciate it for what it is.

The scent in the sillage is wonderful but the scent close to the skin is forgettable. Great fragrance, IMO.

I think I sprouted a rug of hair on my chest after wearing Quorum tonight.

In Spain its regular price is 30 euros (roughly 40$), and even may reach 65$, so IMO it is not 'a steal'. I refer to 3.4oz size.

This was my father's signature fragrance in the early 80's. Recently I acquired a bottle to give him as a present and it does nothing to do with the memories I keep about. Anyway I think it worths a try and can be perfectly enjoyable. give time!!!

It actually ended pretty nicely but that first hour or so was quite a ride!

I actually like this scents, its proverbial harshness is not so pronounced whenever I use this one

my dad have a bottle ,don't remember what is its name , but it says " our version of Quorum " on the box... dono what's this all about but it suits my 70 years old dad...
I bought this blind and I find it dark and oppressive. There are no bright spots to the scent at all its a soapy leather and tobacco monster of a frag that makes me feel depressed when I have worn it.

My bottle of Quorum beat up my bottle of Acqua Di Gio and gave Prada Amber a wedgie. It's that manly.
An excellent fragrance for men and women of any age.
I find a marine or aquatic note in quorum that is disgusting, but the rest of the scent is quite good

I wonder if you came across an old bottle of it? My posts from 9 or 10 years ago, after I blind bought a 30ml bottle, weren't all that different from yours.

I asked a few women their opinion, they smelled it on my wrist, and all turned up their noses.

But I bought a 100ml bottle for $15 a year or so back, and it was nowhere near as bad as my 30ml bottle.

Renato

Yes, I noticed when I was in Spain two years ago that there was hardly any discounting of fragrances.

At 30 Euros, that still makes it a cheap scent over there relative to the 55 to 65 Euro price tags of most other scents - correct?

I feel sorry for Europeans, most places I've visited over there are very expensive with respect to scents (but alcohol is cheap!)

Renato

It has been clearly re-formulated as sure you know yet, and I think current one has been watered down maybe to connect with present taste 30 years later from it was released. My father did not like the reformulated one but he was using it for years the original one.

Yes, you are right. I think here fragrances are highly ovepriced compared to USA for instance...

... and yes, it is cheap but here is considered such a drugstore stuff. I would not say is difficult to find it but not too easy either.

...finally, yes... alcohol is cheap!!!! ... so we can happily drink to forget we cannot collect perfumes at cheaper rates

I love Quorum. Wearing it right now as we speak. The first hour is a little rough but the dry down is very nice.

In a senior citizens home. If I smelled a 14yr old girl wearing this I may punch her dad.

I have a 30ml bottle of this that I will almost certainly never finish. I spritz and then wonder what on earth persuaded someone to formulate it in the first place. It's.... er... what's the word... ah yes... horrible!

I much prefer Bijan for Men. Wasn't crazy about Quorum but I will hold onto my bottle for a while and give it at least another chance.

For those interested, there's a 50 ml bottle on ebay now that is the vintage version (starting at about $7.50, including shipping):

I have a 200 ml bottle, but it's a similar shape, though mine is a splash.

I bought Quorum earlier this week, too. I got it online having sampled it some time before.

Let me say that, as a fully paid up member of the awkward squad, I'm going to disagree with everyone here - Quorum is only interesting for the first hour. After that, it's gone - game over. (I don't recall the sample being so fleeting.)

Not so much king of the jungle as in like a lion, out like a lamb.

I know my body eats up most scents, but this is pitiful - for instance, Gucci PH lasts a full 24 hours on me. (Like I said, I'm awkward - I say PH1 is the powerhouse, not wimpy Quorum.)

I'm going to try spraying my clothes with Quorum next time to see if that will help.

I tried this for the first time today and actually liked the opening! As mentioned in an earlier post, the random hits I got of this scent as I moved my arm around throughout the afternoon impressed me a lot more than the times I sniffed close to my wrist.

It's gonna be a difficult one to wear but I think it's worthy of a cheap purchase...maybe.

The vintage one I have lasts more than 10 hours without much applied.

If you hold it a good foot away from your chest and spray once or twice, just letting its mist hit you, the end result is a very nice, spicy, sunburnt green smell. Like the way my lawn smells in late summer/early autumn. Lots of pine in there, too. The grapefruit is a little sweet, definitely sour. I think it's really nice stuff. Nothing extraordinary or masterful, but very good.
I've got to say that I've been struggling with the sprayer. It comes out like a fire hose! I find I get better results if I hold the thing at arm's length and run through the mist, like Moonb suggests.

And I'll have to agree with his good but not great overview.

Yes scents are definitely expensive, but in Italy I had an odd experience. I needed some tools, some screws and tap washers for the house, and I was told where there was a hardware store two kilometers away. So I drove there, and much to my surprise they also sold big testers of around 30 women's and 30 men's scents - all for 32 Euros each. And they had good stuff, like big bottles of A*men, Gaultier Squared, various Hugo Boss and Armani scents etc. These were all much cheaper than perfume store prices.

Is there anything like that where you live?

Renato

OP was speaking about coming across this fragrance at Burlington Coat Factory, which is an American chain, for $15. $15 is also the going price at many other American retailers, hence my comment that it was by no means a steal given other venues he could've purchased it at. Obviously I can't comment on prices in other parts of the world
