How many of your fragrances were blind buys?

Thread Starter
Being that I just blind bought Quorum tonight it got me thinking about how many of the fragrances in my collection were blind buys and which ones I actually liked.

-Versace Blue Jeans- Like (First blind buy and one of my fave scents.)
-Tommy Bahama Set Sail St. Barts- Like
-Lucky Number 6- Like
-Versace The Dreamer- Like
-Geir by Geir Ness- Like (Read so many positive reviews and seemed like a wise buy)
-Creed Millesime Imperial- Like (Smelled Unforgivable so I had an idea of how it smelled but I wanted the real deal!)
-Creed Green Irish Tweed- Like (Same as MI, I smelled CW and had an idea of how it should smell, but it blew me out of the water)
-Polo Modern Reserve- Like
-YSL Rive Gauche- Like (Heard it smelled like the discontinued Reuhl No 925 and it does!)
-PE 360 Black- Liked at first, but not so much now
-Versace Baby Blue Jeans- Like (Figured if it's related to BJ, it must be good and it's alright. Not as good as the original though.)
-Victoria Secret Very Sexy- Like
-Curve Soul- Like
-Quorum- It's ok...it's growing on me. (It's too much but at the same time I'm strangely drawn to it. Like a fly to sh** I can't get enough of it.)

I didn't realize how many of my fragrances were blind buys. 14 out of 40+

All from my current wardrobe + 3 from the ones that I have owned (Au Masculin, Pi and Black XS)

Ive been very lucky that 95% of my purchases are blind (not cheap either) and i love them
post #5 of 26
Two.

Cuir de Lancome and its ok. I'd never have bought it if I'd tried it first. Thankfully it was cheap.

Vintage Bel a Versailes EdC. Again, ok but not anywhere near as nice as the current EdP. The current EdP is warm, skanky and sensual, whilst the vintage EdC is very powdery.

I'm not going to blind buy anything more. I just don't have the money to spend on fragrances that I'm not in love with.

I have only BB samples and decants, never a full bottle.

-A*Men Pure Coffee (great great great scent)
-A*Men Pure Havane (good scent but the name isn´t accord to the smell. It should be called Pure Honey or Pure Cocoa)
-Black Aoud (The Marilyn Manson´s scent; very great)
-Tobacco Vanille (another great scent)
-Ormonde Man -10 ml. sample- (great scent again)
-By Woman (I enjoy this although some people think that is very feminine smell)
-Joop Nightflight (It´s very versatile for the warm weather. I have it thanks to a great person)
-Arpége (The only dispensable fragrance in my collection nowadays. It isn´t nothing special to me)
-Rochas Lui (This is a masculine and sensitive fragrance. I like it)
-Attitude Extreme (Similar to Armani Code, but this is more spicy and seductive to me. I prefer this)

If I had to hazard a guess out of 1195 I'd say 80%
post #9 of 26
3-4 the least, greatest highlight so far: Francesco pour Homme
post #10 of 26
95% of mine were bought blind loving all my niche (Tauer's LdDM, L'Humaniste, Black Aoud, C&S Dark Rose, Musc Ravageur) just reading notes and i really like'em !
the only two im bored and think about swapping is Joop Thrill, I thought its light on me but in everyones interpretation its stuffy (sultry?) and heavy!!
and CH 212 Splash which is too powerful for a summer and too boring for fall/spring

Musc Ravaguer
Muscs Koublai Khan
Black Orchid
Dior Homme Intense

Probably 80% of my designer fragrances have been blind buys. Very rarely do I purchase a niche fragrance blindly.
The majority of them. I've found that small samples don't give me enough time with the fragrance to make a determination.

Caron:

Yatagan
Third Men
Pure
L"Anarchist

Montale:

Black Aoud
Red Vetyver
+ Graylend 20ml sample

Maybe 75% or so, am lucky enough to like most of them. Went through a blind buying phase earlier this year, but thankfully restricted myself to bargain scents only. At the same time I was doing a ton of sampling of designer and niche stuff, and I have come to realize how few scents I'm desirous of. I don't regret most of my purchases, since it was a very educational journey into scent, but I have almost totally stopped blind buying now.

A baker's dozen out of my collection were bought blind:
A*Men - worth the blind buy, very pleasant scent
A*Men Pure Havane - quickly has become one of my favorites
Azzaro pH - suprisingly good for how cheap it is
Burberry for Men - still haven't given this one enough wears to really form a strong opinion, but not turned off at first sniff
Cuba [insert color] - these are fun and cheeeeeap
Dunhill Pursuit - eh... could live without this one. Bland and chemical-y
Encre Noir - blew me away, a lot darker and more complex than I imagined it to be. Only $40? Wow
Hummer H2 - True to basenotes reviews, this is a good cheap woody-fresh scent akin to Allure/Dior Homme Sport
(x) Halston Z-14 - ugh. Cinnamon and rotting grass. Was disappointed
Ed Hardy Love and Luck - not a bad scent, but could have saved my money, already owning other similar scents
Salvador Dali pH - wow. I kind of knew what I was getting in to with this, but was still surprised and awed at how wicked and daring this fragrance is.
Versace The Dreamer - another I was very happy with
Tommy Bahama for Men - meh.

I've kind of changed my fragrance philosophy since I got into it; I've decided to stop buying stuff that I wasn't completely enamored of. I need to put some of my collection up for sale to finance more purchases! But it's fun buying blind: I've found the happy surprises far outweigh the disappointments. Though I am pretty reluctant to spend more than $40 or so on a blind purchase.

This is pretty much where l'm at right now.

Out of the 40+ bottles that l own, 14 were blind buys, & so were another 3-4 that l've already given away because l really disliked them.
Of the rest, there are about 6 that are just okay to me, & these are going up for sale pretty soon. l've sampled some really expensive niche frags that l absolutely love recently, & l too need to raise funds for these!
l have found some absolute loves through blind-buying though; for example Fracas & Tuberose Gardenia. One does get lucky sometimes!

I hace not had a bad blind buy except from Arabain Nights Bogart. About 20% are blind for me.
Pure Malt - love
Boss Bottled - like
Body Kouros - like
L'Instant Extreme - love
Philosykos - will find out when it arrives

So...5 out of 20 bottles total.
I've had a few:

Kouros - don't like
Azzaro - like
L'Heure Bleu - love
Breath of God (10ml) - like it a lot
Karma (Lush, 10ml) - like
Eau de Cartier (15ml) - like
Body Kouros - in transit
Habanita - in transit

That's 8 out of 22 - almost 40%. However, that's probably only 10% of what I have spent. I never buy anything more than ~$30 blind (other than L'Heure Bleu).

Needless to say, I've had rather good luck so far!
