Musk Koublai Khan or Musc Ravageur?

Thread Starter
I'm looking forward to buying one or the other at SF Barney's someday soon...
Which of the two do you recommend over the other?
Or am I better off with my Kiehl's Original Musk?
Or are all three completely different/distinct/unique that I can settle with having all three?
Or do you know of a better Musk fragrance I can purchase from either Barneys/Neimans/Saks? As you can tell, I prefer in-store purchases...I get impatient waiting for shipments to arrive!

Please let me know.

Musc Ravageur

I love (and own) them both but you can have them for the price of one by simply buying Absolue Pour Le Soir. LOL
post #4 of 54
Musc Ravageur looses its muskiness soon and becomes spicy instead (in this sense closer in style to things like l'artisan Al Oudh). I much prefer the more animalic, civety Muscs Koublai Khan.

I also second alfarom and, for a different feel, recommend Absolue pour le soir (it should be available at either saks or neiman, whoever carries the Kurkdjian line). It's deeply musky, but, in Kurkdjian's style (he of Le Male, Narciso Rodriguez and many more) it remains extremely elegant and rich, without really hinting at improper behaviors.

I think there is space in the wardrobe for both MKK and Absolue, together with the cheaper Kiehl's.

If you want to explore musks, you could also smell the NSFW, p*rnographic Oud 27.

Exactly but MR and MKK are much more complex and longer lasting that the Kiehl's.
I'd go with them both.

And it's Shkran in Arabic شكراً.

I have MR and love it. MKK is something I've sampled and I'm on the fence. I don't think I could ever wear it because the cumin is so powerful. It's very dirty, though I could also see how it could be a turn on for some people (and a turn off for others). At first I found some similarities between MKK and Kiehl's, but in the end they go in different directions.

I'm sure that at some point I'll probably get a bottle of MKK too, but at this point I prefer MR since it's something that I actually wear and feel comfortable in (it's still dirty, but in more of a sensual than sexual sense.)

Also, I suspect that you are muito obrigado rather than muito obrigada!

Musk Koublai Khan

I prefer Musc Ravageur. M-K-K is a work of art, but I don`t want to smell like a perfumed anus..

mkk
They're nothing alike.

Musc Ravageur is a thick, vanilla/cinnamon/clove oriental with an animalic kick that fades quickly to a background purr, tempering the spicy, golden sheen of the fragrance's heart.

Muscs Koublai Khan is a dark, delicate, sweet rose with a much more prominent and durable sweaty/animalic/fecal note, a naturalistic skin scent turned up to eleven.

Given a choice, I'd go with MR, but they're both beautiful and interesting fragrances.
MR is easier to understand and safer if you bind blindly. great scent, top level perfumery, i can wear it comfortably but i think it leans towards the feminine side somewhat...
MKK is much harder to figure out - like all lutens i have tried in general. MKK you must test few times before you decide if to buy.
Neither.. MR if you like smelling like an old man.
Musc Ravageur or Absolue Pour Le Soir.
MKK is more of a skin scent, the others are bombastic.

De Nada.

Yeah.
Male = Muito ObrigadO.
Female = Muito ObrigadA.

O is a letter to represent the Males, and A for the Females.

+ 2, but if I have to choose: MKK. It gets straight to the point... adult, forbidden, sensual musk. MR is candy for schoolgirls.

Musc Ravageur

Never tried MKK but Musc Ravageur is my cold weather favorite along with Tobacco Vanille
post #19 of 54
I've owned MKK twice but ended up selling it both times. I really want to like it and I do appreciate its dirty, animalic nature but I just could never find a suitable situation for it especially since my wife hated it. Musc Ravageur is a much different fragrance and easier to wear. I also really like Tom Ford's Urban Musk.
I love both them, but for me is more wearable MR!!

MKK for me. Musc Ravageur is more wearable around people though.
MKK, and I think it's much more wearable.
I love MKK but have never worn it outside of my room.

I had this image when I read your statement:

* can only drive my 911 turbo in the parking lot *

That would be torture.

double post
I have and enjoy MKK, and MR's on my wishlist, so I'd say get both.
I think Musc Ravageur is a comfortable pecany musk frag and maybe more wearable, although I find it a bit sweet. MKK is more challenging but is, I think, the better composition.
All four mentioned can easily exist in your wardrobe as they're quite different and all very good fragrances.
At the very least they're all worth trying to see which ones you find FBW.
You didn't say "Thanks" in spanish... i don't know if I should answer

Ok! as others stated Absolue pour le Soir may be a better option. If I had to choose, Musc Ravageur.
I will state that I like MKK and have not tried MR (on my "to try" list). But for the price, the Keihl's Original Musk oil is just fine for me. I love the stuff, especially given the price.

This comes up fairly often if you want to search the archives. They are not similar.
Musc Ravageur would be my choice.

mkk does not smell like an anus.
and if it does smell like a certain one, I wouldn't mind smelling like an anus which smells great.

For me Musc Ravageur starts off sweet and feminine but after a while it gets more butch. I prefer it on women. This, as always, is simply my humble, subjective and infallible opinion. Anyway, I gave the bottle away to an old flame. What the hell I owed her one, she helped break off my marriage.
It gets lots of love here on the male forum, and I'm happy for those who love it and can pull it off.

As to MKK Luca Turin called it " hippie oil." And I don't think he meant it as a compliment. i concur but I, like, dig it man!!

Here's what a true genius had to say on the BN reviews about MKK:

" Hey, what happened to my last review? Was it deleted in cyberspace due to references of Tarzan and Jane doing the wild thing while wearing MKK in their jungle treehouse?

( I hope I didn't suggest Cheeta for a menage a trois )

Say, has anyone thus far mentioned that this is a 'dirty' musk which comes off as animalistic, sexy and sweaty?

I'm not a fan of the BN adored SL, but this is the exception.

Well, as the philosopher said:
You can take man out of the jungle, but you cannot take the jungle out of man.
5 stars."

Live and Let Live,

Mario

Musc Ravageur without a doubt. It's more sexy, masculine and just better smelling. MKK smells like rose with baby powder in my opinion.
Holy cow! I got a sample of MR and I love it. Controversy aside, I need to find a way to afford this...or find a split or decant.
Musc Rav is dirty but less dirty than MKK

Same here. It's probably going to be my next full bottle purchase.

Then again, MKK has been beckoning me for a while as well...
MR is easy to like compared to MKK and it does have strong projection and sillage.

Musc Ravageur

Muscs Koublaï Khän.
I own and love them both, but MR gets the nod for being easier to wear.
You REALLY need to smell them both, and give them at least a half an hour to develop before you decide. When you go to Barney's, head straight downstairs to the perfume section. Your nose will be immediately assaulted by a miasma of different perfumes and will get tired very quickly. The MR and MKK are located very near each other on the sampling counter. Have the sales assistant spray one wrist with MR and the other with MKK. Forget about the sample strip, as it is not representative of what either of these monster fragrances will smell like on your skin. Give your wrists a quick sniff, then WALK OUT OF BARNEYS. Walk up to Central Park and back. Then, after about half an hour or so, smell your wrists again. Don't buy based upon your initial impression.

The opinions on these two fragrances vary tremendously; especially MKK. I've found that my nose and taste are often wildly divergent from those of other basenoters. Regarding these two fragrances, I dislike them equally, but if I had to choose one, it would be Musc Ravageur. To my nose, MKK is disgusting for the first half hour, then gets a little better in the dry down. I cannot fathom myself ever wearing it.
I think it is wonderful that there are so many fragrances to choose from out there and we all have divergent tastes!

I have MKK and love it, but I find it stays closer to the skin for me. MR on the other hand seems to have better projection. Dirty? Not for me. Vanilla. cloves, cinnamon and spices. A very spicy and somewhat sweet fragrance that is much more of a spice bomb than Spicebomb. (This is more what I expected from Spicebomb which is a nice fragrance that smells more like an expensive soap to me.) MKK is something a bit dirtier but I always get quite a bit of rose and amber along with a nice civet. For a dirty fragrance, I go to Dior Leather Oud.
I used to like MR a good deal. But I tired of it; somehow it started to smell ultra synthetic to me.

I still like MKK, so that is my vote.
Musc Ravageur. Masterpiece!
I wouldn´t blind buy any of them. Two edgy concotions. Make sure to try them both, MORE THAN ONCE.

MR reminds me of an old lady buttered dirty cloved vanilla. Something in it brings me Shalimar to mind.

MKK reminds me of sweating after sex in a hot night on a works day you´ve missed the morning shower. Picturing the image is really nice, but wouldn´t want to smell like this.

If I was FORCED to choose, I would pick the MR.

Musc Ravageur, hands down by miles
If you're new-ish to Muscs like I am, they can be a lot to handle. Musc Ravageur for sure, MKK smells like an elephant died and shit itself. Again, I only feel that way because I'm under-educated.

true, if you are new to muscs your not going to enjoy them right away. But with time there awesome scents

Neither. I like APLS every once in a while though.
