Barbershop vibe

Thread Starter
Hey folks,

Hoping some of you fragheads may be able to point me in the right directions, I'm looking for a nice old school barber shop fragrance, something creamy, luxurious, a hit of maybe wood, spice or tobacco, even mint or menthol, like some of those old school shaving soaps. I'm about to go on a sample binge again price, anything from 5$/£ to skys the limit, Be interesting to hear any ideas. For starters I have Rive gauche in mind for a sampling, also Tabac.

Rive Gauche fits the bill exceedingly well and it'll probably be the least expensive of them.

Caron Pour un Homme

+1 for Caron puh (I use the shaving cream), and I would add their Troisieme Homme as well, for its strange musk in the base. But no tobacco or spices. Gaultier's Le Male has a very old-style barbershop sweet-musky vibe to me, but it also lacks the tobacco and spices in the drydown.

Tabac is as old school as it gets. I forget whether Santa Maria Novella has a perfume version of their excellent Tabacco Toscano soap; if so, that could satisfy the cravings for barbershop tobacco.

Geranium pour monsieur has an old school barber shop feeling with a nice touch of a vivid menthol

All of the best ones have been mentioned!

Does anyone else get a barbershop vibe from the drydown of Bigarade Concentrée? I need to try it again to make sure, but I think it goes there on its journey.

another barbershop vibe in Chanel pour monsieur Concentré with a turn to the spicy nutmeg and vanilla.

Best is Tabac Original EdC, in the big bottle that's shaped like a bowling pin. Around $15 US$ for 10 oz last time I checked. Easily the best, highest-quality bang-for-the-buck in this category. One of the best in any category, actually.

Rive Gauche
Pinaud Clubman

Pinaud Clubman is probably what most old school barbers have used that I have gone to. My current barber only uses Pinaud talc these days but the smell is still the same.

Rive Gauche smells similar to Barbasol, brut, and pinaud clubman. It is much nicer than Clubman and give you the same vibe.

Definately try Brooks Brothers 1818. Where rive gauche is floral the Brooks brothers is spicy. 6 ounces for 30 bucks. One of my favorites in this category.

With somewhat of an interest in barbershop scents, I'm of the opinion that this classification is a wee bit subjective, owing to the barbers we visited in our youth.

But glad to see many classics mentioned here already...

From your initial post, Rive Gauche very must try for you. Smells like spicy Barbasol shaving cream.

Not so sure about barbershops in UK, but in North America, Pinaud Clubman is THE barbershop scent. It is aftershave strength, but it is pretty potent. Most American guys cannot smell Clubman without being mentally dragged into one of those giant cast iron and leather barber chairs with a pinstriped smock wrapped around the neck.

An alternative to toss your way is Antico Caruso. A very "creamy and luxurious" almond/sandalwood scent. Oft noted as a barbershop scent, I feel it's kind of Italian barbershop. But I love it. Pricey! Its compared by many to Le Male, which some people also think is a barbershop scent. I can kind of see that, but usually when I run into Le Male, it's being worn all too heavily by guys heading for the clubs. Maybe worn moderately, it would be different. Most of the guys I run into wearing it here in LA can be smelled from 15 feet, or 10 minutes after they leave the men's room.

In that same European barber mode is Domenico Caraceni 1913. I don't "get it" as barbershoppy myself, but a lot of people do.

Dominica Bay Rum (Any Bay Rum will do really)

My top "barbershop" scent is Sartorial by Penhaligon's. A modern fougere with "old school" inspiration.

I thought those were only shaving and grooming products. Do they really have a cologne in that line?

I cant thank you guys enough, made my day, I have quite a few of those on order now, keen to seek out the rest of them. Only ones I tried mentioned are Le male and Caron pour un Homme, I like le male in really small amounts, one spray or else it gets way out there, I find the le male deodorant stick better than the edt, CPH is already a fave of mine.

I'll add Casanova as well for the barbershop vibe.

I do not get a Barbershop Vibe from Alt-Innsbruck BUT the scent is outstanding. This is by far my favorite aftershave/cologne followed by Speick

Tabac EdC is an outstanding carnation based beauty. +1 for Fred Hayman Touch, it also smells a lot like Neutrogena's Rain Bath shower gel. I find ambers to also be very evocative of shaving creme. Wearing Histoires de Parfums Amber 411 is akin to getting ready for a shave in paradise.

I totally agree. Sample some bay rums, I find these very barbershop-esque, in style.

My personal favorite in this category is Rive Gauche Pour Homme. If you're not aware, Tom Ford helped release this when he was with YSL. There are 3 versions: Light, the Original and Intense. I prefer the original. DO NOT over apply, just a little is all you need. There is a fantastic Shower Gel also, but it's very hard to find in the US although I saw it everyone in Europe when I traveled (I got mine on Ebay).

A number of the Truefitt and Hill ones have this, and even moreso some of the GF Trumper's...both very English and traditional (though T+H is a bit modernized).

Today, I am wearing Shalimar EDP (in its current formulation). My fella told me I smelled like a barbershop!

(i have never been in a barbers in my life, but it does smell somewhat like Brylcreem, in a warm leathery sort of way)

I'm a girl, but a guy could rock this easily.
YSL Rive Gauche PM.
