Scents similar to Green Irish Tweed? (NOT COOLWATER)

After disliking all my fragrances (she 'didn't mind' Terre d'Hermes though)... and dozens of fragrances at the fragrance counter, the only fragrance my girlfriend liked was GIT. But she said it smells a bit too generic/smells similar to something common (i wonder what...hahaha).

She likes masculine fragrances, and pretty much despises anything with vanilla in it. Doesn't like gourmand fragrances, soapy fragrances, or anything that smells too strongly of one ingredient such as diptyque philosykos (figs) or chanel allure edition blanche (lemons) because they don't smell like cologne.

I'm a big fan of vanilla and gourmands... so she makes me sad. But might as well get ONE fragrance she likes.. she's so damn picky though

Any recommendations that fit the bill that has a similar vibe to GIT?

I think the best solution here is to get a new girlfriend.

To be absolutely honest, I haven't found anything like GIT other than CW... Its a great fragrance (GIT)

Neil4Speed: hahaha mayhaps...

ooh one more thing, i have to be able to smell it! (so designer/popular niche brand found in department stores) I tried blind buying a few...but didn't work out too well.

it doesn't necessarily have to smell like GIT, but something that gives off a similar vibe would be a good start for me. and it needs to have decent silliage/projection..

a couple more suggestions would be really helpful! thanks

You might want to try Monatle Greyland. Not similar exactly to GIT, but she might like it.

Truefitt and Hill Freshman is of similar ilk and considerably cheaper.

Big +1. More similar than Cool Water IMO.

Heeleys Cuir Plein Fleur goes over well for me. It has that violet that is in git. I enjoy it very much.

Blind buy R by Revillon
Please hunt down Boucheron Fraicheur 2004.

I have both and find the similarities amazing. Different enough though, but a better alternative than Cool Water in all ways.

Another good alternative is Jacomo de Jacomo Deep Blue.

yeah dump the girl, or teach her how to smell better

I agree whole-heartedly. And would add Amouage Silver. Expensive, but it's great and from your description your Lady would love it.

Gray Vetiver - Tom Ford

2 great masculine, easy to be liked scents
post #22 of 56
If her opinion is that important, just ask her to buy your fragrances, then you will be pleasing her, as it seems like that's what really counts.
try Aspen for Men by Coty ..... it's cheap, so if it is no good, just throw it away ....
Grey Flannel is GIT's precursor, very heavy on the violet leaf. Yet somehow, I doubt she'd like it. You might, though.
Aspen by Coty smells even more like GIT than Cool Water and it only costs $15 or so for the big 4 oz online. It's greener smelling than cool water and the opening is closer to GIT. I own GIT, CW, and Aspen and I say Aspen is worth a try. It's definitely not as deep or sophisticated as GIT obviously, but it does last longer.

Dunhill Pure is quite similar to GIT.

Well I don't know what other perfumes she has smelled on you but regarding leather frags I have gotten extremely positive feedback from women when wearing Knize Ten and Montale's Oud Cuir d'Arabie. In the gourmand world girls love HM by Hanae Mori EDP

Simple fix - Green Irish Tweed by Creed.

No, I didn't misread the thread.

Simply give it an hour on your skin, and then get her to smell it again. The drydown is even better than the opening. Also, you'll make her look like an ass, which is always fun!

Ok this isn't the answer you want to hear, but I'm not supportive of threads where dudes say "my gf likes this on me, my gf likes that on me, she hates this, she hates that, what should I get to make HER happy about this". F that bro! LOL. If it matters that much do you and she cares so much about YOUR scent, then don't wear ANYTHING. If you are going to wear SOMETHING, then make it something YOU like.

If a man can't wear a scent HE likes then what does it say about a relationship? She's got you by the cojones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm kinda exaggerating here but I hope my point is made for all of you.

I agree with you that a large part of having a fragrance hobby is wearing what you enjoy, but frankly for me I also get a lot of satisfaction when others appreciate what I'm wearing. I don't feel right when other people find off-putting a scent I happen to be wearing. It makes me feel invasive. So, when I know I'm going to be around people I try to wear scents which, certainly, I myself enjoy, but which also I know most others will also take pleasure in smelling.

No i understand completely.

If it's a significant other whose opinion matters, I suggest just taking that person with you. When traveling, I will certainly ask for my wife's input on scents I'm sampling at a store. But I simply cannot predict what she might like and not like, so it's best to take that person with you if it matters that much.

I've learn from my limited experience that "she likes vanilla based scents" or "she hates vetyvers" simply doesn't work. The nose is very complex for everyone and the complexity of fragrances and combinations and proportions of ingredients are so unpredictable for all of us.

sample for yourself AND those whose opinion matters greatly when choosing a scent!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll find and sniff what I can haha

I'm not sacrificing my hobby for her and changing up my collection. I will continue to wear what I like. Though, if she really doesn't like a particular cologne I won't wear it when meeting her. The reason I am searching for a cologne she likes is I want ONE (or two maybe) cologne she likes to wear on special occasions.

GIT isn't something I love, but I definitely wouldn't mind wearing it.

Thanks again for your help!

Sorry man I misunderstood you, we're seeing eye to eye

When Green Irish Tweed and Cool Water were launched and sold like crazy, Ralph Lauren wanted his own version of this kind of clean, fresh scent and created Polo Sport. Instead of the green apple and violet leaf accord used in the first two, Polo Sport gives the same basic structure a pineapple and seaweed twist. The result? A refreshing citrus and green fragrance that women love.
I'd say that people are focusing too much on the fact that she thinks GIT is OK, and disregarding her dislikes. Looks to me like she wants to smell uber-masculines on you. Run Aramis, Polo, Kouros, Paco Rabanne PH, Moschino PH and the like by her, and see what she thinks.

I wonder what perfume the GF wears herself? That might be instructive.
Sounds like an awful woman.

Aspen by COTY.

I found Express Loyalty to be similar to Green Irish Tweed. After recently sampling both, I actually prefer Loyalty. Maybe I got a bad batch of GIT (2011). Personally, I'd take Express Loyalty all day considering the similarities and $100 difference in price point. Additionally, I found GIT to have poor longevity, again maybe this has to do with the particular batch.

I would say Bond N.o 9 Chez (not at all with its more woody than ambergris kind of dry down) but also Wall Street of the same brand could *vaguely remind GIT (expecially in its first part of development) despite the absence of violets in its composition. Garrigue is a good reference but it is more mineral, marine and aromatic than woodsy, dusty and floral *in my humble opinion. Grey Flannel is one to be mentioned and not only because of the violets but expecially because of its minty, woody, restraned and masculine dry down. I would not completely exclude Horizon Guy Laroche in spite of its more marine foundation while i tend to disagree with the Knize Forest's reference cause consider the latter a different and far more complex beast, more focused on the herbal, coniferous, mossy and woodsy-aromatic elements and with a more discreet (in the sense of stuck, hidden and modulated) floral presence. All the other scents reported (included Cool Water and it's the same for New West For Him) are too mineral and ozonic to be associated (apart the fruity-floral initial juicy pungency) at the great and finally "traditional" GIT.
