Good sandalwood scented shaving cream?

Hi Guys:

I recently decided to up my grooming habits a bit. I just ordered a Jagger DE, Badger Brush, Creams, etc. and expect them to arrive next week.

I look forward to learning much and enjoy the experience. My wife looks concerned after first seeing fragrances show up in the mail and now this, but I'm sure once I learn the techniques, she'll have a much better groomed husband.

Anyway, I'd like to know what you think is a good-quality shaving cream with a sandalwood scent? I'm sure I'll be trying various creams over the next few months, but figured I might as well try those the you guys recommend first.

Thanks in advance...

The Art of Shaving makes a sandalwood good soap and cream. I've used both. I believe their soaps are tallow based which many wet shavers really like that. They are pretty easy to find too.

Castle Forbes makes a sandalwood/cedar cream which I didn't care for. You might like it, but the cedar was kind of odd to my nose. It's a very opulent cream.

I'm pretty sure Trumpers, TOBS and others also make sandalwood creams and soaps.

I've been DE shaving about three years and I love it. Makes a routine daily ritual so much more enjoyable. I hope you're boning up somewhere on the differences between DE and cartridges and reading about techniques. Badger and Blade has a large forum with lots of posts and threads about shaving technique. You can peruse without joining and learn plenty.

Go slow....in time, you'll likely get a much better shave, but there is a bit of a learning curve. Focus a lot on prep, blade angle, back off the pressure and let the blade do the work. I found I had a tendency with the Mach 3 to press pretty hard and the cart was forgiving. A DE isn't.

+1 to The Art of Shaving Sandalwood shaving cream. It is the best lathering shaving cream I've used. It also smells amazing and lubricates the face very well.

Thanks for the tips StylinLA. I use a Mach 3 with plenty of pressure, but when my Jagger shows up in a few days, I'll back off and go slow.

I´ve been using Taylor´s Sandalwood which smells great. How would you compare the scent to the Art Of Shaving version?

Definitely try Trumper's Sandalwood. That is an incredible one, IMO.

I agree

I Own 2 Castle Forbes ShaveCreams - their sandalwood is NOT one of them - it smells kind of odd of mushroom, nutmeg, dirt and smoke.
Love my 2 Castle Forbes creams - Lime & Lavender

I own 2 Art Of Shaving ShaveCreams - and their Sandalwood IS INDEED one of them for a good reason - many consider the Art Of Shaving Sandalwood ShaveCream to be the best purest smelling sandalwood scented ShaveCream on the entire Market - Europe as well as the US included.
Love my 2 AOS creams Lemon & Sandalwood

Also can recommend Truefitt&Hill Sandalwood ShaveCream although this newer version is not straight sandalwood but a mixed cologne type of fresh sandalwood scent, but very nice in my view.

DR Harris Marlborough is a smokey smelling very masculine sandal and cedar wood based ShaveCream - very well suited for winter. It smells too smoked in the tub, but once you apply it, it really smells incredible good !

TOBS and Trumper sandalwood are both fine, but not in the same league as the 3 I just mentioned IMHO

check out the reviews section of Badgerandblade.com...

I've got the AOS Sandlewood one and really enjoy it, the scent does linger a bit. Plus I actually also like the (discontinued?) edt version.
Crabtree & Evelyn used to have a sandalwood, not sure if they still do though. They have both soaps and creams. i've heard their soaps last ages.

also try L'Occitane's soaps and skip their bowls since they're expensive and unnecessary.

I know it's not a wood, but I'd also highly recomend the Trumper's Coconut, and then from TOBS for something floral the rose, or floral/woody Eton College, and then I'd say skip the highly regarded avocado (smells like cucumber and the Trumper's coconut is just as smooth).

They still carry it but it's currently out of stock online. However the store in my area has it. It's a really nice one.

Hi Mike!

Some years ago a member of this forum extolled the virtues of Cyril R Salter "Indian Sandalwood". I bought it, and my feelings can best be expressed in this review from an English site:http://srpreviews.com/showthread.php?ltr=C&t=51987
Plus some folks over at B&B that go on and on about " WTF is this cheap spice?? "

My point being that I think you're right to sample.
Have you found this site yet?
http://theshaveden.com/store/index.p...&productId=101

So you could get all of the three T's sandalwood and CF Cedar/Sandalwood (which is woods/earth and not straight up sandalwood but for $2.49 might be worth exploring) and Oh, I don't know-- I did own the Caswell-Massey 1752 Sandalwood once and was underwhelmed, but that's me.

Not to bum anyone out but AoS creams have just been reformulated by the geniuses at P&G --they cut back on the essential oils- http://straightrazorplace.com/soaps-...mulations.html

I've ordered another Sandalwood cream which does constitute blind buying but what the hell, I live in L.A. and winter is short, so I'll soon be shaving with some citrus or God know what PLUS the discussions of both at Badger and Blade were um --quite interesting:

Queen Charlotte's Soap--Sandalwood Cream.
See: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...t=best%2B+rose

And *drum roll* my present favorite take-my-word-for-it this is IT Sandalwood cream that I use and love?

None.

It's a soap. Yep a soap and I'm a cream freak but this is really, really good. IMHO

QED Sandalwood

*****************

Anyway, welcome aboard and do share/review your creams when you get them.

And whatever happens, take solace in the thought that our little hobby/addiction may be expensive;but at least it's not fattening.

Cheers,

Mario

I received my sample of QCS Mysore Sandalwood. Rather faint. Not bad by any means but, imho not in the same league with QCS 'original' QCS cream, Esquire, Celestial Woods, or the equally complex and well blended Provence.

QED soap still tops my sandalwood list.

One final word about Castle/Forbes Sandalwood

--So, it's nutmeg that I smell?
Interesting. I felt as I were shaving with peanut butter.
However, in all fairness, the scent settles down and lasts for a few hours which is amazing longevity for a cream.
After settling the "nut' smell disappears and one is left with a patrician and manly scent. So, if you can abide a great shave in terms of cushioning and lather while enduring peanut butter, the after effect may be worth it.

(And having said all that, I believe THE BEST smelling Castle Forbes is Lime, great for the summer; with Lavender being a more versatile scent all year round --Just in case if you can't take their Sandalwood/Cedar.)

However if you like incense/spiced-God-knows-what-the-hell-else-is-in-here you might like Cyril's. To each his own.

But before you tell me Cyril is best, try the CF cream, and the QED soap

Live and let Live,

Mario

I have the Art of Shaving cream and it smells insanely masculine. I can feel my chest hair follicles point and giggle at others.
