To my nose, it has floral notes, but not anything orchid like. Heavy, sweet floral, patchouli, sort of gourmandish, touch of chocolate. I think I recall several people comparing Black Amethyst from Bath & Body Works to Black Orchid. So, if you have a BBW locally, you can get a decent idead of what Black Orchid smells like.

Thanks for the feedback. What does BBW mean ?

WE have about 50 stores here and one is in our area.
So we should look for Black Amethyst ? Also, any others that have a true orchid scent, ( as opposed to mixed floral ) ?

PS : this sample card I got from the Ford counter seems fresh sprayed after several hours: I'm thinking it must have impressive longevity and sillage.

BO is a beast on the longevity and projection categories.

Black Orchid is NOT a floral scent by any stretch.

You might try some of those Hawaiian gift perfumes that contain orchid.

Black Orchid is much about jasmine than orchid.
Fantastic stuff, btw.

To my nose it's a dirty spicy floral amber. Develops into an eyebrow raising sweaty thing (in a good way) while keeping a dark, mysterious profile. Wonderful frag, but too head trippingly intense for me to wear everyday.

It is one of my all time favorite fragrances. Love it!

But 1) it's not new and 2) it doesn't smell like orchids.

I'm pretty sure Black Orchid has been around for a few years now, but it is a wonderful scent! However, if you're looking for an orchid-based floral then this isn't it. Black Orchid is really rich heady and unusual, not overly floral to my nose.

Power monster right here, and I agree that there doesn't seem to be too much of an orchid note. Very, very sweet and rich to my nose. Overall, this is one of my favorites from Tom Ford; unfortunately I don't reach for this bottle enough.

Is the BLACK ORCHID a masculine or a feminine Frag? Im Kind of Confused... Been Reading very good reviews about it and i want it but i want to be sure.... Dont want to go around smelling like a sisi.... lol

Black Orchid is from 2006. The advertising says it's for women, but I think it's totally unisex. Make sure to try a sample of it first to ensure that you like it, don't make a blind buy.

Thanks man,, the thing is I stay in africa and most of the perfumeries here sell fake/ sub standard products,, so I'm asking a friend from london to buy it for me so there's no way I can test it.. I have gotten good reviews on it from basenotes so I would just go for it and hope for the best since its quite expensive. :-)

I've never sampled it but I have heard a lot of people say that it has a rotting fruit note

I've been curious about 'orchid' in fragrances. Does anyone know, when people refer to orchid in fragrance is it the traditional Cattleya mossiae they are referring to? Given that there are thousands of orchid varieties, and the scented ones are maybe a fifth of that, with an enormous fragrance spread ranging from very flowery fragrant (cattleyas and some dendrobiums) to spicy (cymbidiums) to putrid (bulbophylum which often smell like rotting corpses) and just about everything in between. And even within the very fragrant ones it is hard to pin down a characteristic that is "orchid" like one can do with roses, for example. I have one C. Mossaie that smells like peppermint, for example. So, I'm wondering what is "orchid"? I ask because in addition to fragrances I also have a pretty good collection of orchids and roses (about 150 in total) that I grow and I'm not sure I could pin it down.

It's definitely on the feminine side, IMO, but guys can certainly wear it. (I do.) Be advised, though, that it's a loud, dark, jammy fragrance. Definitely something you want to try before you buy.
