Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men (One more shot, but only one shot)

I finally received this cult favorite the other day. I sprayed it once on the chest and the sillage was stronger than anything I've ever experienced, by a longshot. However, it was so loud that I washed it off after an hour because I didn't like it. It just seemed to remind me of Stetson/English Leather type of fragrance. All I got from it was a loud bitter green one dimensional note of......... whatever the dominant note is in this. Yes, as others have said, one shot to the chest is all that is needed.


Should I give it "one more shot" at impressing me before getting rid of it? I know the answer is going to be "yes", but just curious what you all have to say.

Did I unfairly judge it by washing it off after only an hour?

Does it get better after the 1-hour mark?

Well, it's an 80s powerhouse and it is stronger by a ton than most all contemporary fare. To me it's one of many sandalwood/patchouli/oakmoss bombs from that era.

I don't know that you need to force yourself to like it, but as long as you have it, i would try to wear it for a longer test. Though i don't know that I'd say it's going turn into something you truly love after dyrdown.

I don't find I wear it often, but I generally get compliments from women when I do ( but they are women around my "maturish" age for what it's worth). I prefer Versace L'Homme when I'm in an 80s mood.

At least it probably wasn't a pricey purchase. 80s scents aren't for everybody, but if you have an occasional taste for them, this is a good one IMO.

To this day I still don't know what this smells like. Even with one spray, it's instant olfactory fatigue. It's a shame too, because I think it could be something I would like...

I like it, yet don't wear it much. Don't try too hard to like any fragrance. However, always give a scent a few chances.

Giorgio VIP is one that I do wear quite a bit. It's just as strong as Giorgio using a very dark, leathery patchouli.

I would think you would like it as well. If you like Balenciaga pour Homme, you should like Giorgio for Men.

Its own of those scents that make me realize how important it is to get online feedback/reviews on a scent. I just did one shot to the chest and didn't find it too strong. Yet I had a family member who later in the day ( while at a distance) told me I smelled very manly .....whatever that means

I just love the honey and patchouli. Mostly the honey though. It kinda has made Paco Rabanne Tenere expendible to me ( because it has too much galabanum and as also too tempormental with me)

I have the reformulated version. One spray is enough, and you might even consider dilution. I have no problem with super-strong frags, because that means I can dilute them and get more "bang for the buck." I've done this with Kouros and One Man Show, with excellent results (haven't seen the need to try it with any others). Unlike other frags of that period and with similar listed notes, this one doesn't have that "hard" base of wood, patchouli, and amber/vanilla. Instead, it's mossier, which softens the impact of the sillage for me (and I like it better as well). It's not a good frag if you are going to sit in one spot for hours, though, because it is strong and simple. If you've got to walk around a lot, this is one to consider.

Try it again, and leave it on for a few hours.

My daughter bought me Georgio for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I always wore Azzaro PH in my early 80s college years and was keen to smell this (partly because of the rose note which I have become fond of thanks to Ungaro III and C&S No88.).
Three sprays later and everyone was gasping for air ... GBH indeed. The smell was so strong that I changed my top and washed my neck and wrists, and decided that GBH PH was not for me.
The next day, I put on the same top from the day before, and the smell was still there - yes, I admit I didn't wash the top. The smell was lovely, and I kept sniffing. Since then, I've realised that a little goes a long way, and that I prefer it after its calmed down to its long lasting base.

It is now a favourite.

I would say the reason you washed it off was because it is such a hash sharp fragrance that is not well make.

Move on there are better classics to try.

Well I'm on to my third try here. Coming around a little on this one, but still don't know if I'm going to keep it. I don't know how anyone gets a honey note in this. I keep searching for it but to no luck. I can say that I am a fan of its longevity, sillage and the fact that it is not sweet.

If I were you, don't spray it on your chest. Try your wrists and back of your hand, maybe a shot to the back of your neck. Giorgio is a sillage machine, and you might enjoy it more when it's not sprayed directly under your nose.

I wear it a lot, and typically I do five sprays.

Let it be and quit trying so hard. Try it again in at least three weeks or longer and you'll probably perceive it more as deep and rich but not necessarily so radiant and strong. It softens up as you wear it, and among other things you'll start noticing the basenotes more than the florals which are so predominant the few times you smell it. I didn't like it the first time I tried it. It was a loud, grating, floral chypre kind of thing. I put it away thinking I'd never like it, then tried it again in a few weeks, maybe longer, and loved it. Makes a great room spray, too. And my gf likes it a lot. I don't wear it much but when it's right it's right. It's much better and far more interesting than 95% of the $200 + niche fragrances out there.

And try Lauder for Men (1985)

I appreciate all your input everyone. I have made my decision. Although Giorgio did not live up to the high expectations I had for it, I'm really liking this now. It's a masculine oriental that doesn't quit. And with my dry skin, it is exactly what I was looking for. I'm not going to say it is the best smelling fragrance out there, but lately I'm not in search of that. What I want are versatile (non-synthetic smelling) workhorses with longevity and sillage, for a bargain. And at $25 for a 4.0oz of this, I'd be crazy to get rid of it. Funny how our opinions change so quickly.

Yes, this is probably the most important lesson I learned, which is to keep bottles of frags that show any glimmer of possibly being rotation worthy, and then giving them a couple more chances (spaced out over months, usually). During the interim times, I would take the cap off and smell it every few days or so, trying to accustom myself to it.
