Profumum

I keep passing this line up. I tried Oxiana and liked it... But it was a bit to feminine for me. I love the bottles and the notes are interesting, I just want to know where to start???

I find this brand to be quite erratic. They range from outstanding compositions to total craps. My favorites so far are...

Arso (Boozy, resinous, leathery with a tad of sweetness)
Olibanum (A balmy frankincense. Stark)
Victrix (spicy-peppery and green)
Ambra Aurea (name says it all)

Oxiana is a nice incense scent... I didn't think it was feminine or masculine, definitely unisex (androgynous really). Of their scents that I've tried, they seem to be less about smelling "pretty" and more about smelling "interesting," spare notes presented in minimalist (and sometimes grating) fashion rather than complex and smooth blends

Fumidus is a dirty, dry tobacco, whisky and wood. It smells like sitting in an armchair with a cigar in front of a lit fireplace. I'd suggest starting there. Acqua di Sale literally smells like the ocean... seaweed and salt air. Olibanum smells like... olibanum. It's rendered very sheer and soft. Aquae Nobilis is a nice dry masculine geranium, green and soft.

Of the ones I've tried, haven't one I liked yet.

Tut tut, tut...

I agree with alfarom, in that Profumum is very hit and miss, especially given the price. Maybe you could tell us what notes you like and dislike, as well as how unisex you're prepared to go. For example, they have a few of vanilla-centric offerings - would that interest you? Do you like florals?

By addressing the above points I'm sure your list will greatly diminish (or maybe not!).

Good questions Trebor asks, and I'll beat him to the Vanitas recommendation. Santalum is one of my fave sandalwoods.

I love Fumidus and Ambra Aurea. Sadly, the price point is way too high (for me)

At least 2 bn'rs have Profumum up ====> splits forum.

I am a big fan of their Antico Caruso. Not a fragrance with much complexity, but if you like its main ingredients, you will really enjoy it.

I've been tempted more than once to fall for their Acqua Viva. And then there's their Neroli. Not that I don't own a surfeit of lemony and orange blossomy frags already. But there is a special something about those two - and if I had a big honking bottle with a spray (instead of a samp vial), I could thoroughly investigate just what it is.

Ha, ha! I decided to refrain from mentioning Vanitas on this occasion.

This would be my list if you add Fumidus (smokey scotch and vetiver). Oh, and Thundra (mint, mushrooms and patchouli).

I loved the old formulation of Santalum (dark juice) but not sure about the new clear one. It's still nice and I may eventually purchase it but not as nice as the old.

I would start with Ambra Aurea and Fumidus

My favorites from Profumum are these. I have owned others too, but find I tire of them quickly. Their fantastic ingredients smell really wonderful but for the most part many of them lack complexity and development. Although ARSO keeps me fascinated all day long.

Arso - campfire smoke and tar leather - by far my favorite in the line!
Aqua Viva - lemons - pure refreshment for the skin
Neroli - A very nice neroli wood
Patchouly - an excellent patch - one of the very best
Ambra Aurea - I love this amber. It is thick, not too sweet, very rich but kind of dry - but it seems to me it doesn't age well. I have smelled some bottles that smell positively off after sitting on the shelf for a year or more so that has kept me from an investment in this wonderful elixir. The notes suggest real ambergris (grey amber?) is used and I know that ambergris can start to smell sour after a while - maybe that's it.

Another Antico Caruso, here. Straight up barbershop almond sorta deal.

Part of the line was here for a while and I tried them all but no go - yet to try Arso or Santalum (which does interest me).

I own and enjoy both, especially Olibanum. It is one of the finest frankincense scents I've found.
